Angelina Jolie is one of the actresses who has made a shining example of putting one’s fame and influence into good use. Her active involvement in charitable organizations, such as UNICEF and UNHCR has opened the doors for a lot of causes to be heard. Apart from her humanitarian works, Jolie has also established a stellar career filled with blockbuster films and memorable portrayals. Name the genre, and Jolie has most probably done it. We love her action-packed movies, as much as her tearjerkers that show her wide acting range. Here is a list of her five best crying scenes, in no particular order:
5. A Mighty Heart
The heartfelt drama was based on a memoir that followed the kidnapping of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, portrayed by Dan Futterman (The Birdcage) in the film. Jolie played the vital role of Daniel’s wife, Mariane, who also penned the memoir. The entire film was a detailed account of the kidnapping incident, which unfortunately had a tragic end. The scene where Mariane was informed of the terrible news that her husband did not make it out alive was too painful to watch. Jolie handled the heavy scene like a pro, which made us feel as if we were with her throughout this terrible journey.
4. Girl, Interrupted
The film was one of the hottest psychological dramas of the 1990’s. It explored mental health issues, and followed Susanna Kaysen, portrayed by Winona Ryder (Stranger Things), a young woman who spent time in a psychiatric hospital after an attempted suicide. Jolie played the role of Lisa Rowe, a long-time patience of the hospital. Susanna and Lisa form a close bond and quickly become two peas in a pod. This does not last for long as their own personal demons get in the way. The scene wherein Susanna was mentally tortured by Lisa was a difficult one to fathom. Mental health issues are no walk in the park, and its victims need all the patience and attention. Jolie’s performance was chilling, memorable, and one of the reasons why the film has become a cult classic.
3. By the Sea
Jolie was also the writer and director of the romantic drama, where she starred alongside her then real-life partner, Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds). The film followed the tumultuous marriage of a writer named Roland, portrayed by Pitt and Vanessa, portrayed by Jolie, who was a former dancer. The two attempted to rebuild their broken relationship by taking a vacation in a small coastal town. The confrontation scene where Vanessa revealed to Roland that she was barren explained her self-sabotaging ways that were the reason behind their crumbling marriage. Vanessa grew jealous and insecure of other couples who had it better, and tried to ruin their happy marriages as well. Jolie was able to convey the emotions of a broken woman who just wanted nothing but a stable family life
2. Changeling
The mystery crime drama is every mother’s worst nightmare. Jolie portrayed the role of Christine Collins, a mother whose son suddenly goes missing one day. She went on an endless search, chasing every possible lead even after encountering one dead end after another. A few months after, a boy claiming to be Christine’s son suddenly showed up at her doorstep. The scene where Christine tried to convince the police officer that the boy was not her real son was gut-wrenching, especially for a parent who has suffered an immense loss. She was desperate for answers, and was ready to give up everything just be reunited with her boy. The film showed the selflessness of a mother, as well as the bravery of Christine who did everything in her power to challenge the flawed system that gave little regard to women.
1. Maleficent
The dark fantasy adventure featured the back story of Maleficent, portrayed by Jolie, who is known for being the wicked fairy godmother in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. The film made us understand Maleficent more, and gave us a different perspective from the story we all grew up with. Maleficent was a fairy who lived in a castle in the forest kingdom. She had a pure heart and was a fierce protector of her surroundings. The scene where Maleficent lost her wings after the betrayal of Stefan, the future king and father of Aurora/Sleeping Beauty, changed the course of her life for good. The loss of her wings meant losing her absolute freedom. This had a crippling effect on Maleficent, and caused her to become bitter and vicious. Jolie was effective in her portrayal, which allowed us to see Maleficent in a different light.

Lupita Nyong’o is still struggling with the death of her Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman.
On Tuesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actress admitted she’s still trying to “come to terms” with Boseman’s death — from colon cancer, at age 43, last August. She also assures fans the Black Panther sequel will honor the late star’s legacy.
“It’s still so hard for me to come to terms with his passing,” Nyong’o, 38, admitted when Boseman’s name was mentioned.
As for what she’ll miss most about him on the set of the sequel, the Academy Award winner said, “His leadership… He led the movie with such compassion and just presence. When Chadwick came on set, he was present and he brought his entire being to that movie. And he was just so humble as well. That leadership will be missed.”
She added, “He was my friend and so it’s hard to think of him in the past tense still.”
Nyong’o also said she’s confident knowing Boseman would want them to move forward with the hit film’s sequel.
“I do know for certain he would want us to do this,” she said, “and I feel what [director] Ryan Coogler has planned very much honors him and his legacy. So I feel good about going back.”
Nyong’o, who played King T’Challa’s love interest, Nakia, in Black Panther, broke her silence about his death in September after attending his private memorial service. She called his death, after a four-year cancer battle, “a punch to my gut.” She said despite his illness, Boseman “used his body in every way he could. He did his own stunts, drummed at his own parties, danced many a night away, mastered martial arts… the list goes on.”
She also said Boseman changed her in many ways.
Over the weekend, Boseman was honored at the SAG Awards for outstanding performance by a leading man for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife, Simone Ledward, accepted the award on his behalf with a moving speech.
“‘If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind.’ That’s a quote from Chadwick Boseman,” Ledward said during her speech. “Thank you, Screen Actors. Thank you, Chad.”
Boseman has been on a winning streak for his final film performance, with his wife Ledward accepting the Golden Globe, NAACP Award, Gotham Award and Critics’ Choice Award for him — and delivering several moving speeches.

There are those actors that you recognize when they come on screen and can’t help but like even if they play some of the worst characters ever. Ray Winstone is someone that you might actually be terrified of in real life thanks to his gruff voice and manner, but it sounds as though this is only half of his persona since in real life he sounds like a decent person that is capable of turning on the gruffness whenever he wants. That being said he’s still one of those folks that seems to sit in the wings until his services are needed and it’s time to hurt someone or simply let him loose. In many ways he’s the kind of actor that seems typecast an awful lot, though it’s been attempted to break him out of such roles a time or two. Somehow though it always seems to come back to the fact that this is simply where he tends to excel the most.
Here are a few things about Ray that you might not have known.
10. Ray got into boxing at the age of 12.
He became an avid boxer when he was younger and was rather successful throughout his ten-year career, taking a on a great number of opponents and defeating many of them in an attempt to keep climbing the ranks. Eventually he did get out, but the sport did teach him a few things.
9. He’s been cast as the tough guy in a lot of films.
This seems to be his niche since this is almost always where you’ll find him in a movie. There have been a few exceptions but those haven’t exactly been the best examples of what he can do and have made him look a bit foolish and kind of campy, like he did in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
8. If you recall, he voiced the titular character in Beowulf.
Even Ray found this kind of amusing since by the standards of the mythical character he’s nowhere close to the same stature. But his voice, gruff and commanding, was a perfect fit for the huge, bulging warrior that many have read about at one point or another during their school years.
7. He’s declared bankruptcy twice.
Just at a glance there’s not a lot of detail as to why he had to file for bankruptcy twice, but neither time seems to have stopped him from moving forward as he’s taken it in stride as much as he can and gets back on his feet eventually. This kind of argues the point as to what celebrities spend their money on that allows them to go broke.
6. Ray was offered a part in The Wire but turned it down.
Considering that the filming was being done in Baltimore he didn’t want to leave his family for that long of a time. One thing you can honestly say about him is that he’s a family man and doesn’t like spending too much time away from them.
5. In his view if you can get into a ring and get smacked around by another guy then acting is easy.
That makes a lot of sense when you think about it, as taking a loss, a REAL loss, in front of thousands of people has to be kind of humiliating, while even winning can be kind of a humbling experience. After that, getting up in front of a crowd of people seems like it would be simple.
4. He’s been added to the upcoming Black Widow movie.
As Mike Sprague of MovieWeb has stated there’s no real word on just which character Ray will be playing, but given the fact that it’s the Black Widow movie it’s likely going to be someone tough, very gruff in their manner, and who doesn’t take a lot of nonsense from anyone. That’s just Ray’s character in the movies and it works.
3. His net worth is around $5 million.
For a guy that’s gone bankrupt twice in the past this is kind of impressive since one would almost think that your financial future wouldn’t exist after having gone through that kind of financial struggle. But thankfully his acting has allowed him and his family to continue to live a good and fruitful life.
2. Ray is currently in his 60s.
He’s not the young man he was when he started out performing in plays to entertain those that wanted to come watch, but as an older man he is still one of the more entertaining personalities within the business and he almost always delivers when it comes to his roles, which seem tailored just for him.
1. He’s not all that active on social media.
Just from a casual glance it would appear that Ray isn’t really big on social media and doesn’t intend to be since his following is almost non-existent. His daughter’s on the other hand is at least noticeable.
This is the kind of guy that you either hate during a movie or can’t help but respect.

Okay, so, I’ve already wondered how The Lighthouse wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, as well as how Spider-Man: No Way Home, which I thought was a shoe-in for the Academy Awards, wasn’t nominated, but I kind of understand how those two films didn’t get the nod upon further consideration. What I absolutely DON’T understand though is how Uncut Gems, which is probably the best film I’ve seen in the past few years, didn’t get nominated at the 2020 Oscars.
I mean, seriously, that makes absolutely no sense to me, since it has all the calling cards for Oscar success. Now look, I know it was a crowded category in 2020. In that year, nine films — 1917, Ford v. Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, Joker, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Little Women, and The Irishman — were all nominated for Best Picture in 2020. But honestly, I think Uncut Gems was better than all of them, except for maybe Parasite, which won Best Picture that year (and deserved to). Still, that is nine slots, and slot number 10 definitely should have gone to Uncut Gems, and here’s why.
Why Uncut Gems Should Have Been Up For Best Picture
Directed by the Safdie Brothers, who also directed the amazing movie, Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, Uncut Gems is a masterpiece from the first minute (the very first second, even!) to the last. Adam Sandler stars as a compulsive gambler who forgoes family and even love in an effort to hit the perfect score in his gambling exploits.
He runs a jewelry store, and manages to get ahold of a beautiful opal, which happens to catch the eye of Kevin Garnett (yes, the basketball player), who grows strangely attached to the piece. But Sandler’s character does everything he can to profit off of the rare gem, and what follows is a master class in tension as he gets deeply involved with the wrong people.
Uncut Gems literally makes me sick to my stomach to watch, as I don’t think I’ve ever been more emotionally stressed out watching a movie in my entire life. Now, this might seem like a bad thing, but I genuinely view it as a positive since it is incredibly rare for a movie to viscerally impact me on that level. But Uncut Gems does so in ways that I find extremely admirable.
Adam Sandler’s character is utterly repugnant, but at the same time, you root for him. He’s a philanderer, but you somehow want to see him be happy, even though he doesn’t deserve the happiness that he already has with his family. Sure, Uncut Gems is far from being the first crime film out there, but it’s so bizarre in its creative risks, and so taut and tense, that it stands in a class all on its own. And it does so mostly due to the towering performance by Adam Sandler. Speaking of which…
Why Adam Sandler Especially Should Have Been Nominated For Best Actor
Of the actors who were nominated in 2020, there was Jonathan Pryce in The Two Popes, Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Antonio Banderas in Pain and Glory, Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, and Adam Driver in Marriage Story. Now, I can’t speak for Antonio Banderas or Jonathan Pryce, because I didn’t see Pain and Glory, or The Two Popes, but I did see Joker, Marriage Story, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
And while I enjoyed DiCaprio’s fragile movie star in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Driver’s conflicted father in Marriage Story, and Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker (which won Best Actor) in, er, Joker, none of them come even close to Sandler’s sleaze-bag performance as a compulsive gambler.
Sandler, who used to be the man back in the ’90s but had a string of turkeys following 50 First Dates (Let’s be real, Adam Sandler has been in some of the best and worst movies of all time), has kind of flitted around in nebulous territory. Does he make kids movies now like Hotel Transylvania? Does he make goofball comedies strictly for Netflix like Hubie Halloween? Or, is he now making old dude comedies like Grown-Ups?
Well, Uncut Gems proved that Sandler can’t be boxed into any specific category, since he can pretty much do anything he puts his mind to, since this performance is every aspect of Sandler’s vulgar, manic potency, times a million. His talent creates a frenetic performance that has its low ebbs and its mighty, rushing flows that ultimately creates the role of a lifetime. So, again, how was he not nominated?
What Uncut Gems Did Get Nominated For
Like The Lighthouse, Uncut Gems was completely shut out of the Golden Globes. But unlike The Lighthouse, Uncut Gems didn’t even get a single nomination at the Academy Awards (The Lighthouse at least got nominated for Best Cinematography). Uncut Gems did, however, get recognized by other prestigious institutions.
The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominated Uncut Gems for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing, which it lost in all categories (Aww, shucks). That said, the Florida Film Critics Circle nominated it for Best Original Screenplay, which it won. It also won for Best Score by Daniel Lopatin. The Independent Spirit Awards gave the Safdie Brothers an award for Best Director, and Adam Sandler won for Best Male Lead, so the film’s greatness was recognized. Just not by the Academy.
So, Why Didn’t Uncut Gems Get Nominated For Best Picture?
I’m going to hazard to guess that Uncut Gems is just too unconventional of a crime film to get the big nom. It’s weird, it’s wonderful… it’s weirdly wonderful… and while weird does sometimes get the nod (see: Jojo Rabbit), it also oftentimes doesn’t (see: The Lighthouse).
Still, I’m more upset that Adam Sandler didn’t at least get a nomination. He carries the entire film, and I’d say he’s like a Walter White in Breaking Bad, or a Tony Soprano in The Sopranos. By that I mean the story couldn’t possibly exist without him as his performance is so large and so commanding, that everything, from the characters to even the setting, kind of gets absorbed into his orbit. In the end, it’s just such a shame to me that the film (or Sandler) didn’t get nominated. I would have gladly switched Jojo Rabbit, Ford v. Ferrari or Little Women for Uncut Gems any day of the week, but oh, well. You can’t force people to like what you like.
And that’s my analysis, but what do you think? For news on the 2022 Oscar nominations and various races, make sure to stop by here often.

Thanks to Outlander, Sam Heughan knows what it’s like to be responsible for someone’s favorite thing. The Starz drama brings Diana Gabaldon’s books to life with Heughan as her Scottish hero Jamie Fraser. It takes more than Heughan and his co-stars to bring the characters to life though. Heughan names one crew member his favorite person on the set as his partner in bringing Jamie to life.
Heughan was a guest on The Cultural Coven podcast on April 12, 2021. During their hour-long chat, host Nicola Ray asked Heughan his favorite person on the Outlander set. Heughan didn’t even have to think about it. Outlander Season 6 premieres March 6.
On ‘Outlander,’ Sam Heughan needs his makeup artist
Heughan named Wendy Kemp Forbes as his favorite person on the Outlander set. Kemp Forbes is the makeup artist who turns Heughan’s hair highlander red. In the early days, she was responsible for his dye, but they’ve since switched to wigs. Kemp Forbes also gives his face that historically weathered look.

Sam Heughan and Wendy Kemp Forbes are in the trenches together
Outlander isn’t your average TV show with glamor makeup. Heughan and his co-stars portrayed 18th century Scotland. Scotland was already wet and muddy, but then Outlander staged battle scenes where the cast roll around in it. Then the action moved to the American colonies, so they’re recreating the American Revolution era, which is no cleaner. That’s no easy feat and Heughan needs an ally in griming up.

“I think the worst part is the makeup and hair,” Heughan said. “I have the most amazing hair and makeup person, I couldn’t do it without her. Number one, she’s just so fun and brilliant. It sort of gets sprackled. Your face gets covered in makeup every day and mud and blood. Despite washing copious times, you go to bed. On the co-star front, Heughan was sure to give credit to his Claire, Caitriona Balfe. Heughan and Balfe have worked together intensely every season, as they promised to do when they both auditioned. Outlander has seen costars come and go, but Jamie and Claire are always central, so there’s no underestimating his connection with Balfe.
“My co-star, Caitriona, as well,” Heughan said. “It is hard to choose between the two because me and Caitriona are so close. We’ve worked together from the beginning and been through this journey together.”

Director Cathy Yan and Cassandra Cain actress Ella Jay Basco discuss DC’s Birds of Prey movie and its diverse cast and crew with Screen Rant.
DC’s latest movie, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn), has aimed to break barriers with regards to diversity and inclusivity, both in front of and behind the camera. Director Cathy Yan and Cassandra Cain actress Ella Jay Basco have contributed to that goal, and Screen Rant recently caught up with them at a Birds of Prey event to discuss – as part of a group interview with other entertainment outlets – what that diversity means to them, the film’s R rating, and the comic book industry in general.

When you guys got approached by Warner Bros., what was that reaction? Because you’re the first person (an Asian female director behind a superhero movie) between Marvel, DC, anything to actually bridge that gap. What was that like for you, and how did you guys both approach the work based off of that?
Yan: It was very humbling and surreal. It all happened very quickly, and it’s something that I think about a lot. At the time, I didn’t think about it at all [laughs]. But you know, I think it’s a really great responsibility. Hopefully, the movie is just good. And then we can just talk about as it was a really great, fun movie and a great time, and it just so happens to have an Asian female director and an Asian female lead.
Basco: I definitely think it should’ve happened sooner, but it’s such an honor to be a part of this. I couldn’t be more grateful.
Comics are kind of like storyboarding – did you use any specific comics for reference material? And did you have any love for the medium beforehand?
Yan: Well, I have to be honest, I grew up mostly in the film medium with comic books. So I grew up watching the Batman movies and that was the world of Gotham. Then when we talked about the look of this movie, we wanted it to feel almost like a comic. So it has that kind of colorful tactile quality to it, and that was kind of by design. I felt like there were a lot of comic book movies that were very slick and I wanted it to have a little bit more of that gritty nature to it. A big reference for me, for Harley, was the whole New 52 series, because that kind of reinvented her a little bit more as an antihero, and she was out on her own, and she was living in Coney Island, and all of that. And I think that was a big starting point for me.
Basco: When I first found out that I got the role, I bought a bunch of comic books of Birds of Prey, Cassandra Cain, the whole shebang shebootle. And I wasn’t as aware, but I definitely studied, and now I’m in love with Cassandra Cain.
So this movie is rated R. Can you tell me all the stuff you wanted to do, like the violence, the gore, all that… and how much of that did you [Ella Jay Basco] get to see too?
Yan: Oh she got to see everything. She probably has more curse words than most in the movie, which is hilarious.
Basco: It was fun because I’m never allowed to do it anywhere else. So to pretend and to play with that was fun, I would say.
Yan: It extends from her character. Cassandra Cain, in our movie, is like the sweet kid who is tough and out on her own, so that’s kind of her tough exterior. And so much of the movie is through Harley’s perspective and Harley is so unabashedly cuckoo, and she’s both this pixie manic angel, but she’s also like a complete violent force of nature. To be able to encapsulate all sides of Harley, it just makes sense to make it R.

It’s far easier to be the saving grace of a bad film than the worst part of a great one.
The latter rarely makes sense – surely if a film is firing on all cylinders and has a competent director behind it, every element will work just as well?
If only it were so simple. While it’s rare, there are instances of very good films being undone by a sole bad element. Sometimes it’s an accent gone awry, or a distracted actor, or even something as simple as a bit of miscasting.
To shine a light on this phenomenon, we’ve compiled 12 askew performances in great films, from the famously incongruous (Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York), to choices that are more controversial (Hugh Grant in Love Actually? Yes, really!)
And while you’re here, why not also sample the inverse of this strange occurrence – brilliant performances in otherwise terrible movies…
Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners
Gyllenhaal is guilty of too much acting in Denis Villeneuve’s grimy child-abduction thriller. While the other A-listers that surround him (including Hugh Jackman and Viola Davis) bury themselves in grief and rage, Gyllenhaal seems to be in a different film entirely. He’s all twitches and facial tics, injecting off-putting weirdness in a movie that absolutely doesn’t need it.
January Jones in X-Men: First Class
The Mad Men star adopts a flat affect for this otherwise great franchise reboot. In fairness to her, the character she’s playing – mutant henchwoman Emma Frost – is written as quippy arm candy and absolutely nothing more, but Jones seems painfully uninterested all the same.
Mark Hamill in Star Wars
First, some caveats. Some of our greatest living actors have been no match for George Lucas’s inability to write good dialogue, and Hamill got infinitely better as an actor as he aged. In those first three Star Wars movies, he’s also playing off Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, two of the most charismatic actors in film history. All that said, he’s still not very good in the original 1977 Star Wars, playing Luke Skywalker like he’s a bratty 10-year-old. That may have been the point, but it’s still frustrating.
Keira Knightley in Bend It Like Beckham
Keira Knightley is to Bend It Like Beckham what Mark Hamill is to Star Wars: an actor who would blossom with age, but whose fresh-faced weaknesses are on full display in their first big film. Playing a young footballer, Knightley is distractingly wooden. She also agreed, admitting years later that she didn’t think she was very good in it.
Hugh Grant in Love Actually
Many may think Grant’s inclusion in this list a travesty, both because he’s Hugh Grant and/or because Love Actually isn’t very good anyway – these people are wrong. But the actor is an unexpected weak link in an otherwise well-performed movie. On paper, he should work as the British PM, but there is a self-conscious, slightly withdrawn quality to his performance here, as if he didn’t particularly want to be there. Even his memorable Downing Street dance sequence seems as if it’s been filmed at gunpoint.
Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York
Sunny, glamorous (and now retired) Cameron Diaz was always being cast against-type, notably as John Cusack’s tragicomic, frizzy-haired wife in Being John Malkovich. Every once in a while, though, against-type veered into “horribly miscast”. Take Gangs of New York, in which she played an Irish pickpocket and the film’s love interest for Leonardo DiCaprio. Even beyond the bad accent, Diaz is only really there so this Martin Scorsese epic could have another A-list name on its poster.
Ryan O’Neal in Barry Lyndon
There’s an argument to be made that O’Neal’s blank-faced miscasting here is the point, or a rare instance of a void at the centre of a movie actually working in the film’s favour. But that might be giving even the great Stanley Kubrick a bit too much credit. Forced to cast him after Robert Redford passed on the opportunity, Kubrick seems to paint around O’Neal – this is an eye-wateringly gorgeous epic full of wit and charm, if hamstrung by its vacant lead.
John Travolta in The Thin Red Line
Even in a movie featuring cameos from George Clooney, Woody Harrelson and John C Reilly, John Travolta is somehow too famous for it. He only has a few minutes on-screen, playing a military general, but he seems so out of step with the film’s more ethereal rhythms that it can’t help but throw off the movie.
Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained
A persistent cameo player in many of his movies – and other people’s – Tarantino is always a bit distracting, but his presence in Django Unchained takes the cake. He only has a few unfortunate lines of dialogue – including the regretful “Shut up, black!” – and also speaks in a horrid Australian accent. Thankfully, Jamie Foxx’s Django blows him up soon after his arrival, saving us all in the process.
Russell Crowe in Les Misérables
Russell Crowe can’t sing, which doesn’t help when he’s been cast in a film adaptation of Les Mis. But he also seems uncomfortable in the film, struggling to project beneath a tiny blue hat. His dreadful singing recalls Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia! Except where Brosnan’s unique timbre added to that film’s rinky-dink charm, Crowe’s boorish growl seems misplaced here, particularly when his co-stars are all at the top of their game.
Jared Leto in Blade Runner 2049
Buried in the Blade Runner sequel is Leto’s overcooked performance as the film’s villain. He’s problematic in part due to the film’s script, which saddles him with hammy monologues and far too many opportunities to chew the scenery, but Leto is generally unbearable here in any case. In the most Jared Leto sentence imaginable, he also partially blinded himself to play the character, choosing to wear blurry contact lenses that diminished his sight. All that exhausting effort is seen on screen, to the film’s detriment.
Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Isn’t it annoying when an otherwise perfect movie is infested with outrageous racism? More than just a dubious performance wrecking things, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is undermined by Mickey Rooney’s abhorrent caricature of an Asian person that is tragic even by 1961 standards. Wearing fake tan and a pair of buck teeth – along with tape to change the shape of his eyes – Rooney destroys the film single-handed.

We honestly think this little girl needs an Emmy, Tony, and Oscar too
Who’s the better actor? Viola Davis, with her wheelbarrow of awards and recognitions, or six-year-old Rosie White, who has stolen all of our hearts portraying Davis on her Instagram channel?
White, a powerhouse of a little girl, is attracting national attention for her informative and completely on-point videos showcasing the stories of inspiring Black performers, politicians, dancers, athletes, and inventors.
It all started with a supportive mom and White’s early affinity for acting and history.
When Kenya White’s daughter came home from preschool a few years ago with an informative printout about Rosa Parks, White dutifully read the information aloud to the then 3-year-old Rosie. Curious as to whether the little girl had absorbed anything, White asked her a couple of questions about Parks. Not only could Rosie answer them, but she could recite back most of what her mom had just read.
“I said, ‘Rosie, wait — hold that thought!” White tells Scary Mommy.
She ran to grab the closest thing to Rosa Parks’ clothing that she could find in Rosie’s size.
“I grabbed my camera phone and said, ‘Do it again!’”
It was the start of something both of them enjoy doing — and the start of their social media following.
“I’m a creative person and she loves to learn, so it’s a match made in heaven,” says White.
The dynamic mom-daughter duo have amassed thousands of followers on their Instagram account, go_rosie_grow, where they post inspiring videos about famous Black people they want to tell the world about. They’ve appeared on their local news station in Detroit and Good Morning America, spreading their message of Black joy and accomplishment.
Rosie has recorded videos as Stacy Abrams, Angela Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Kamala Harris, Tina Turner, and other icons, complete with costumes curated by mom, bars of song, and dance moves. They post videos year-round, not just during Black History Month, and are currently highlighting the stories of Black inventors, such as George Crum, inventor of the potato chip, Garret Morgan, inventor of the traffic light, and Marie Van Britton Brown, inventor of the first home security system.
When selecting stories to highlight, White says some are people who catch Rosie’s eye, like Viola Davis, who Rosie saw on television and said, “‘Wow, she’s really pretty, let’s do her,’” White remembers. Other picks are inspired by current events like track star Sha’Carri Richardson‘s disqualification from the Olympic Games.
Many of the folks Rosie has portrayed have taken note. Whoopi Goldberg sent her a box of books, including volumes by Goldberg herself and other inspiring stories. Laila Ali and Erykah Badu are now among Rosie’s Instagram followers.
Kenya has consciously chosen to keep the tone of the educational posts celebratory.
“When I was six years old I learned about he negativity of Black history,” including slavery, White remembers. When it came to her daughter’s videos, she says, “I didn’t want to teach her such darkness about Black history. Right now it’s all positivity.”
While the videos are currently attracting a lot of media attention, White and Rosie have been plugging away on the project for years, accumulating 265 Instagram posts to date.
“We’ve been sowing these videos for a while,” says White. “We’re reaping the seeds that we sowed.”
Next up for Rosie? Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, which White hopes he will announce in time for them to produce a video for Women’s History Month this March.
