It is to believe that the death of the Nintendo Wii has definitely closed the door to new Rail Shooters worthy of the name. At the same time, this little white console had a nice catalog of them and lent itself perfectly to it…

And the reasons that hinder the return of this genre are legion. For one thing, it doesn’t get great press. There were many releases on the Wii, the console that will see the most of them, but the critical feedback is uneven. Content is often to blame, the Rail Shooter having as a recurring objective the replayability through the score. A concept that worked well on terminals, but which loses much of its meaning on consoles. But the main argument against it, in general, is the need to own an accessory to be able to take full advantage of it.

Hence the appearance of so many Shooters on the Wii, which avoided the purchase of an accessory with its relatively comfortable Motion Gaming. And some of them are really really cool. We can quote you the classics The House of the Dead 2 & 3, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and its sequel, or Ghost Squad. But if only two were to be retained, then we would of course tell you about the hilarious The House of the Dead: Overkillabsolutely jubilant, and exceptional Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies, an absolute masterpiece. A little nod to the latest column.

No accessory allowing the Rail Shooter exists on current consoles, and for good reason, they have practically no representative of the genre in their libraries. None that are really worth the detour, for the moment, and it is not The House of the Dead Remake who will say otherwise. Its Motion Gaming, on the Switch version, works very poorly, and the controller gameplay, at Sony and Microsoft, is terribly frustrating. Which will always be the case, as long as the Rail Shooter goes more in the direction of a Time Crisis only one starfox.

It is perhaps there, the biggest bolt that blocks the progression of the genre. Its desire to reproduce an arcade-style recipe, preventing it from fully reaching the console public. Some preferred to opt for the gameplay of a Space Harrier, allowing you to control the movements of your character and your aim, a sort of evolution of Shoot’em Up. A concept that will take up starfox on Super Nintendo, before being embellished by Sin and Punishment to the death of the Nintendo 64. However, who would want to play a game designed for the hollow plastic gun of the arcade with a simple controller, a joystick? Nobody of thought…

Whether The House of the Dead has such an aura, which its opportunistic and detestable film adaptations will not contradict, it is largely because its first opus hits hard. It’s not super pretty, you have to admit, but it’s fluid, gory and enjoyable. We dismember zombies in packs of six, we blow up small elements of the decor to recover bonuses or items, and we face big bosses with a neat design. Even the artistic direction of the app gives it a certain charm.

And on the gameplay side, it’s super simple, for immediate handling. Each arcade cabinet has two guns, meaning two players can cooperate. On this big, somewhat cheap accessory, only two buttons: one to reload, and a trigger to fire. The rest will be done by means of the pointer, in other words by aiming. The little twist is the division of the levels into different routes to explore. Some branches will unlock under certain conditions, often requiring speed and skill.

A recipe that will be repeated line by line The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead 3, still on arcade machines, incorporating even more gore. But what about the console versions, will you tell me? Well, that’s where the shoddy accessories of the 90s come in. On Saturn, the first opus is worn properly, and works with a controller. The console having been entitled to at least one plastic gun, it is also possible to play it in conditions closer to what the original arcade terminal offers.

It is the same for The House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast and The House of the Dead 3 on Xbox. But where the series really takes off on console is obviously when these two opuses came out on Wii, on the same DVD. A boon for all lovers of the license and the genre, and a perfect opportunity for Sega to introduce its franchise to a wider audience. And we have to believe that it paid off, since a year later, the Japanese giant published The House of the Dead: Overkillconsidered by many to be the best episode of the seriesdespite the distance it takes from the original recipe.

I allow myself a small aside on this game, and this for two reasons. The first, because it’s really very good, and it doesn’t seem to have worked that well. It’s a shame, because in addition to being enjoyable, the title tells a story that is pleasant to follow, but above all tinged with a humor that is both second degree and trashy which works very well with the grain of its image giving it a very nice grindhouse aspect. The second, because it’s a version designed for the console. Everything is adapted to the consumption of the video game in his sofa, from the interface to the way he has to tell his story, through the possibility of buying and improving a small gallery of weapons. A great conversion!

Finally, the series has failed on the bench of remakes in recent months, with the soberly titled The House of the Dead Remake on all media on the market. A version brought up to date, at least on paper, because in practice we rather have the impression of having lost in quality despite the facelift a bit questionable. However, these days, a license like this does not need a disappointing episode to end in the closet, perhaps permanently. Finally, we would like, for once, Sega to release its game on consoles with a dedicated accessory. A nice, cheap gun, with exposed welds and a trigger that clicks, just like it did back then.. An ugly thing, whatever, that doesn’t cost the publisher much, but that allows us, players, to have a great time knocking out everything that moves in a new game. More than fourteen years have passed since the release of the first opus of No More Heroes on Wii: an eternity in the life of a player. If the franchise has long been the preserve of Nintendo machines, this has not prevented the Grasshoper Manufacture studio from delivering such crazy epics on other home machines, especially on Xbox360 and PS3. For the record let’s mention games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead or even Shadows of the Damned. Nice titles that will have more or less marked the players… but not enough to launch the construction of a sequel. Too bad for them! If No More Heroes 3 was not put on the grill when it was released on Switch, for lack of sending of code by the editor / manufacturer, its arrival on the other platforms of the market (PlayStation and Xbox) gives the opportunity to try this encounter of the third type. Finally ! Thanks to its publisher for sending us a review code used on Xbox Series X. Was it really necessary to take out the heavy artillery from Microsoft?

The game thus imposes to explore these imitation open world, empty to cry as at the time of the PlayStation 2, to accomplish main and secondary quests. Side quests that only have accessories in name. Since to access the confrontation against one of the bosses, you have to accumulate enough hard cash, eliminate a certain number of enemies and accomplish various tasks (unclog public toilets, mine minerals, etc.). This is why Grasshoper Manufacture requires frequent use of the right analog stick to reload the laser sword or perform classy finishes. No More Heroes 3 relies – for the most part – on conventional gameplay, where attack, dodge and jump functions are placed on the ABXY keys or other geometrically shaped keys if you’re playing on PlayStation. Appearance a bit frustrating, the loading times are sometimes quite “long” in view of what the console sometimes finds itself displaying the ruins of a city drowned in fog.
