sony has a system in place to at least make them accessible – the streaming-based PlayStation Now – but these are compromised versions of the original experience, plagued with image quality and latency issues. However, there is a way forward, albeit for a limited audience. The open-source RPCS3 emulator gives PC users access to the PlayStation 3 library, and I played Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, with anisotropic filtering 16x. It’s a remarkable showcase of what could be, whether via local emulation on a PlayStation console, or via a Bluepoint-class remaster.

We always want to get the highest framerates possible when releasing new games, but we also understand that this is not always possible. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an interesting case, as it’s a game that dangled us with the possibility of 60 frames per second, before stomping our dreams when it finally released. During the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, we saw a trailer for the game running at 60fps, which is a far cry from the final version, which mostly ran in a 20-30fps window. The game did, however, run in unlocked mode, which allowed for up to 60fps in some sections – a taste of the game it was meant to be…

This trailer was produced before receiving PS3 development material. It was probably built on a powerful PC and even then it may very well have been pre-rendered given the perfect frame-rate. Although we have no idea what the development status of Kojima Productions is, I’ve spoken with other developers who were involved in the early days of the PS3 and all of them suggested that the final material was a step up. back from what was promised. So bringing visuals of this caliber to the PlayStation 3 would be no small feat.

Metal Gear Solid 4 isn’t just an example of a game that’s essentially tied to its original host system, it’s also a title that could benefit immensely from the resources of more modern hardware to bring us closer to the original vision – the kind of thing that Microsoft achieved with some of the preservation efforts of its compatibility team: higher frame rates, better resolution. And that’s where RPCS3 comes into play. After years of work, this emulator computer open source can boot virtually any game, and it’s capable of amazing feats of improving upon original PlayStation 3 titles.

This is no walk in the park considering that the PS3 was undoubtedly the last console of “exotic” design thanks to its Cell processor, the result of a collaboration between sony, IBM and Toshiba. While the central “PPU” core and even the Nvidia RSX GPU are relatively simple designs, Cell’s latent power comes from its satellite SPU coprocessors, capable of phenomenal performance in their day. RPCS3 emulates them UPS on the CPUand the more SPUs a developer uses in a given game, the harder it is to emulate the game at the original speed, not to mention the performance multiplier we want to hit 60fps

That means to spin Metal Gear Solid 4 to 60 frames per second, it takes a lot of computing power. To produce the video featured on this page, I used a Core i9 12900K – and not to its basic parameters. RPCS3 is able to exploit the acceleration possibilities offered by the instruction set AVX-512 – which, unfortunately, Intel has disabled on the latest versions of the chip. Luckily, I have an older CPU that offers this functionality – accessible by disabling the slower efficiency cores. To cover the GPU needs, I used a RTX-3090but it’s believed that slower graphics hardware would achieve the same result – PS3 emulation is heavily CPU limited

Even that isn’t enough, however, and I used a custom version of RPCS3 from CipherXOF which introduces a number of performance improvements specifically aimed at improving the frame-rate in MGS4. The immediate impressions upon starting the game are remarkable: The Kojima team has always produced graphics that retain their quality at higher resolutions and 4K brings out the best of these assets. The 16x anisotropic filtering also adds enormously to the quality: in hindsight, the filtering of the textures on playstation3 was not a particularly strong aspect of the presentation of this game and many other titles. However, it’s the huge frame rate improvement – and consistency – that makes the biggest difference. It really feels like this is how the game was meant to be seen, and gameplay is also improved with much more precise control and lower input lag.

That said, the emulated experience is certainly not perfect: some of the heavier areas have noticeable performance drops. I spent a lot of time changing settings and looking for solutions, but we couldn’t overcome the drops in these sequences. At least the VRR solves most of the problem if you use such a screen. I was impressed that a lot of the custom effects worked well – and that increasing the render resolution also improved the quality of the shadows considerably – but there’s a whole host of bugs and visual discontinuities that don’t quite work. In the embedded video you will get a much better idea of the challenges I faced and all the minor bugs and issues I encountered…

While emulation offers fantastic insight into how PlayStation 3 games can evolve beyond the limitations of the original hardware, there can be issues – there isn’t the same kind of quality assurance. only in the case of a version entirely designed by the holder of the platform. That said, based on conversations I’ve had with the emulator’s developers and the many technological hurdles they’ve overcome over the years, it’s believed that it’s only a matter of time before RPCS3 cannot offer a full game without problems. Even now, we’re close to an experience that feels like a native PC game…

However, the computational effort required to emulate the UPS means that to exceed the performance of the playstation3 original, it requires significant CPU power. There are many RPCS3 fixes that improve performance, the key being to reduce SPU load. So a lot of these “optimizations” involve removing tasks from the SPU, like GPU post-processing. Some titles have barely touched SPUs and are therefore already performing well. Demon’s Souls is the typical example, Ridge Racer 7 is another. But that’s the fundamental challenge facing any official PS3 emulator from Sony, aiming for the PS5 – cell emulation is still extremely difficult and, based on the RPCS3 currently, it’s certainly beyond that. the power of the Zen2 CPU of current generation consoles.

As for MGS4, revisiting this game opened my eyes and confirmed what we initially suspected, that this is the weakest game in the series. He just tries to answer too many questions, but gets bogged down in cutscenes and nanomachines. I enjoyed the game a lot in 2008, but a proper re-release would require some serious changes, we think. It’s a shame, because the core mechanics are excellent. With more gameplay and fewer scenes, the experience could have been great, but it’s too unbalanced as it is. Despite everything, this experience was worth it: my PC is top of the range, but I had excellent experiences with this game, Motorstorm, Killzone 3 and many others, and We would continue to follow the progress very closely by RPCS3

A bad for a good ?

Launched in 2014, PlayStation Now is actually a pioneer in this area: it was available before the Xbox Game Pass and for years now it has allowed you to play in cloud gaming, even from a PC without the need for a console at hand. An interesting offer which is also based on a whole catalog of PS2, PS3 and PS4 games but which has not experienced the same growth as its American competitor: it must be said that Microsoft’s efforts are far more important, even to the point of making it its number one weapon.

But PlayStation Now is far from having said its last word, quite the contrary even since on June 22, it will merge with PlayStation Plus: the latter will then offer three levels of subscription, each offering its advantages… including hundreds of titles for the Extra and Premium categories. And there will even be PSOne and PSP titles in the pile!

Before this big upheaval, Sony therefore seems to want to clean up and like any good self-respecting catalog, there are newcomers and departures. Sony has therefore announced the removal of 54 games all the same, often from large franchises or featuring great classics of video games : we imagine, however, that with the advent of the new PlayStation Plus and its much more substantial list of titles, Sony should strengthen its proposal this summer … and in a rather solid way.

The Xbox Series X and S are selling better than the PS5 in the West. In shape, Microsoft is taking the opportunity to seek new takeovers in the sector.

Microsoft is doing very well, like the other tech giants. The firm reported its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2022 (ending March 31, 2022) with revenue of $49.4 billion for net profit of $16.7 billion. All sectors of the brand are doing well, especially gaming through Xbox.

Xbox beats PlayStation in the Western market

If Microsoft does not give more or less any interesting information concerning its video game activity in its financial report, the firm was more talkative during its conference with investors. Satya Nadella, the boss of Microsoft, was able to confirm that ” Xbox Series S and X consoles have gained market share globally for two quarters in a row and Xbox was ” next-gen market leader over the quarter in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Western Europe “. If Microsoft takes care to add “next-gen” it is because the firm compares itself above all with the PS5, Sony’s console launched at the same time. Nintendo has remained the leader in the console market for several years with its Nintendo Switch consoles.

But Xbox’s strategy isn’t just about selling consoles anymore. Satya Nadella announced that more than 10 million people have already started streaming a game through Xbox Cloud Gaming, and the Xbox Game Pass service has seen a 45% increase in game time over the past 12 months. This also translates into a 66% increase in gaming revenue for the Azure branch, responsible for building a cloud for all video game developers.

Remember that if Microsoft says it has been ahead of PlayStation for two quarters, the PS5 generally remains the market leader for next-gen game consoles. Sony’s console benefits from the aura of the PlayStation family, all of whose home consoles have been popular (sometimes belatedly), especially in France. The recent success of the Xbox can be explained on the one hand by Microsoft’s paid strategy, but also and above all by a question of production capacity. Since the beginning of January, it has become very rare to see the PlayStation 5 in stock, much rarer than Xbox Series X or S.

Buybacks will continue

Microsoft is still in the middle of its takeover of Activision-Blizzard-King, unveiled earlier this year, but the firm is already planning for the future. And obviously, other redemptions are to be expected on the horizon. The website Video Games Chronicle was able to get his hands on a job advertisement posted by Microsoft to find the head of a team dedicated to mergers and acquisitions for Xbox. The objective of this team is assess growth opportunities in the video game industry ” and ” lead Microsof’s video game M&A program (such as Double Fines, Activision Blizzard, Zenimax) “.

It seems clear that Microsoft will not announce major takeovers before having the fire to make on the integration of Activision-Blizzard, but the firm should therefore not stop at this takeover. The video game sector remains the target of a concentration of players. Recently, we learned that Ubisoft could perhaps be the subject of an acquisition.

Sony is changing its Playstation Plus subscription system in depth and has revealed to us the official date of these new formulas. We take stock of the subscriptions and the various offers offered on the PS+.

[Mis à jour le 26 avril 2022 à 10h06] Playstation is completely revamping its subscription offers. The firm announced, through a blog post signed Jim Ryan, that Playstation Plus and Playstation Now subscriptions would be combined into a single offer, comprising three levels of subscription and services. Remember, Playstation Plus was Sony’s subscription offer to access Playstation multiplayer since 2010, and also included other benefits like two free monthly games to download, discounts, cloud saving and more. While on the other side we had Playstation Now, the on-demand catalog game service also exploiting the potential of cloud gaming. From now on, these two offers will therefore be combined in three Playstation Plus offers, from next June 22.

What are the new PS+ subscriptions?

As we told you in the introduction, the new Playstation Plus subscriptions will be divided into three different levels. We will first find the Playstation Plus Essential, which will include all the advantages of the current PS+ (multiplayer game, two games to download, cloud, promotions) and generally keep the same pricing as today. Then we will find the Playstation Plus Extra, which adds a catalog of 400 downloadable on-demand games to their subscription. Finally, the Playstation Plus Premium adds even more games to this catalog, offering PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 titles for a clearly retrogaming-centric experience. Subscription prices and content:

Playstation Plus Essential:

Playstation Plus Extra:

Playstation Plus Premium:

The two new Extra and Premium subscription levels both include a catalog of video games on demand. There are of course different titles and platforms depending on the two subscriptions, but it is possible to wonder about the content of the said catalog when it is released next June. To reassure gamers, Sony said it wants to include flagship titles like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal when new subscriptions launch. Something to reassure players who want to take advantage of the latest exclusives on their console.

What is the launch date for subscriptions?

Such a change takes a little time to be properly implemented, even for a company as massive as Sony its Playstation. This is why Jim Ryan explains in his blog post that the new subscriptions will be implemented from June 22 next, in a precise order taking into account the different regions of the world. Asia will therefore be the first continent to benefit from it, followed closely by North America and Europe. Also note that at launch, current PS Now subscribers will see their offer migrate to PS+ Premium at no additional cost.

While she was expected “in the coming months”, PS5 compatibility with variable refresh rate (VRR) screens will finally arrive as early as this week. A first list of “officially” compatible games is known.

The “some months” mentioned by Sony at the end of March will ultimately have been only one. It is indeed from the last week of April 2022 that the manufacturer will deploy the update of the PS5, finally making it compatible with screens with variable refresh rate (Variable Refresh Rate, or VRR). Long promised on the console, even before its release in November 2020, VRR is one of the key features of the HDMI 2.1 standard for video games. With this update, the PS5 finally aligns itself with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S, which have offered VRR since their first day of availability.

On the occasion of this announcement, Sony also unveils a first list of games officially supporting VRR on the platform:

Insomniac Games first in class in its implementations

By “official” support, it must be understood on the one hand that the game works in VRR without any display bug or other problem, on the other hand that said game is “aware” that it is running on a connected console to a VRR screen or not, and that it can adapt its behavior and technical optimization accordingly.

A first example of such an implementation is given by the Insomniac Games studio, always exemplary in the monitoring of its games, and whose three existing PS5 titles (Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Spider-Man Remastered and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart) will receive a VRR update from day one. From then on, the games will benefit from the following changes:

VRR can be forced on “non-compatible” games

Remember also that the PS5 will also offer the user the possibility of “forcing” the VRR even for games that do not formally support it, but without certainty that this will be done smoothly. The functionality could however be beneficial on games which in the current state do not offer a frame rate perfectly stable.

First and foremost, of course, we think of Elden Ring, a game whose immense playful and artistic qualities are unfortunately matched only by its technical mediocrity. By the magic of the VRR, its regular drops of frame rate around 50 fps could suddenly be made relatively benign. The same goes with Death Stranding Director’s Cut in its “quality” display mode in native 4K. Hopefully these games, like others, will handle VRR without a hitch.

Playstation Studios has acquired a slew of talented development studios over the past few years. This is why the editorial staff of JV has made a selection of 10 “made in” Sony games for you to play absolutely on PlayStation 5.

Summary

Bloodborne

We attack this selection with a big chunk, since we are talking about the game of the year 2015. Bloodborne is the first title from the From Software studio that seeks to stand out from the successful Dark Souls license. Gone are the castles and dragons in pure Dark Fantasy style. Say hello to a Lovecraftian universe in the gothic city of Yharnam. You play a hunter in search of the mysterious pale blood. You wander through the narrow streets of this cursed city to discover its terrible secret. Where Dark Souls leans towards defensive gameplay using a shield, Bloodborne encourages and rewards aggression. Indeed, when you lose life, you have the opportunity to regain it by hitting enemies for a short time. The famous roll has been swapped for a much more mobile dash. You also have a pistol capable of parrying if you shoot at the right time, allowing you to deliver a final blow. The game features a jaw-dropping level design offering absolute consistency and immersion. A must have for all Playstation gamers.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut

Hideo Kojima is above all a genius game designer, capable of the best as well as the craziest. death stranding is of this caliber. With this first game from his new stable, Hideo Kojima offers us an unprecedented video game experience. Actor Norman Reedus here embodies Sam Porter Bridges, a transporter in a post-apocalyptic world who has experienced what is called Death Stranding, a paranormal phenomenon that has broken the border between the dead and the living. Since that day, the souls of the deceased, called “Wasted”, wander, aging all forms of life with the help of a supernatural rain. The survivors logically took refuge in shelters located in the heart of Relay towns, the last bastions of humanity. Your mission is to build the UCA (United Cities of America) in order to forge new bonds between humans, bonds lost following Death Stranding. This reunification takes place through the delivery of equipment to the heart of a world that is more hostile than ever. That’s why this game is not for everyone. The gameplay relies almost entirely on walking. Here, patience, analysis and perseverance are the key words with the sole aim of reconstituting a humanity that has lost what characterizes it: its social dimension.

Demon’s Souls Remake

First-born of the famous series of Hidetaka Miyazaki, Demons Souls was originally released as a PS3 exclusive in 2010. This laid the foundation for Dark Souls and all other From Software games to come out thereafter. The backstabs, the loss of souls when you die and the stamina bar that runs out with each action come from there! The action takes place in the kingdom of Boletaria, where experiments on demon souls have brought the world to ruin. Your mission as a player is to stop the creatures that have been released in order to save Boletaria. Its vibe is completely different from its successors. Here, the universe is explored through several “levels” becoming more and more complex. You discover in this universe a prison watched over by sprawling guards, an underground city or even a volcanic mine. The game had the right to a remake on PS5 maintaining exactly the same gameplay. Only the graphics have been revised upwards to remain as faithful as possible to the original experience. You will take full the peepers.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

After dabbling in platforming with Sly Cooper and exploring the superhero genre with InFamous, Sucker Punch takes on feudal Japan. Ghost of Tsushima puts us in the shoes of Jin Sakai, a Japanese warrior resisting the Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima during the 13th century. The title offers a true historical immersion worthy of Assassin’s Creed. Navigating the island plains is a real pleasure, thanks in particular to an original GPS system. Here, it’s not a simple mini-map that guides you, but the breath of the wind allowing you to better admire the graphics of the game. Bow, explosives, smoke bombs, kunais are your best allies in order to get rid of the invader Mongolian. A version Director’s Cut is available on PS5, and fixes some flaws of the original edition. A new area is also available: the island of Iki, with its own narrative arc which extends the experience lived in the heart of this feudal Japan.

god of war

Sony conference at E3 2016. A young boy is quietly playing in front of his wooden house, when his father calls him. He passes the door of his home, his father asking him if he knows how to hunt. He replies yes. And there…stepping out of the shadows, more charismatic than ever, comes Kratos, the slayer of Olympus, who seems to have retired to the northern mountains. The public screams with joy at the unexpected return of this video game saga, which has not been heard from since 2013. Two years later, the game was released exclusively on PS4 and was crowned Game of the Year 2018. Evolving in a semi-open world, Kratos must go laying down his late wife’s ashes with the help of their son, Atreus. They will travel together this Nordic kingdom while building a father-son relationship that they never had. But, as their journey progresses, they will engage in a conflict involving the Nordic deities. Horizon: Forbidden West

Released 5 years after the first opus, Horizon: Forbidden West follows on from Horizon: Zero Dawn. Developed by Guerrilla Games, the title takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has returned to a primitive state and must face mechanical fauna. Originally peaceful, these machines become more and more aggressive over the years. We embody Aloy, a young Researcher from her tribe, whose objective, in the first opus, is to stop this cybernetic scourge. In Forbidden West, she continues her quest in the lands of the Prohibited West. This second episode is richer than its predecessor with more advanced gameplay mechanisms and a more careful staging. The universe is as mysterious and engaging as ever, packed with jaw-dropping graphics. Get ready to face ever larger and more dangerous machines, animated and designed with the greatest care. Finally, know that the game has excellent cross-gen work. Whether on PS5, PS4 Pro or PS4 Fat, the game runs perfectly. An exceptional sequel to a saga that is just as exceptional.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (the saga)

Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best superhero game we’ve had since Batman Arkham Knight. Embodying the web weaver has never been so enjoyable as in this video game adaptation. Marvel’s Spider-Man sets itself apart from other Spider-Man stories by the simple fact that Peter doesn’t start out as an eternal high school kid who’s just discovered his powers. Here, the climber has been bringing justice to the streets of New York for several years. This seniority of the character makes it possible to offer a refreshing vision and development. On the gameplay side, the game offers us a perfect simulation of the friendly neighborhood spider with a flawless movement system. Weaving your web between the skyscrapers of New York is pure pleasure. The fights are well executed and the story is fun to follow. The game worked so well that it even had the right to a stand alone centered on Miles Morales waiting for the sequel. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is planned for 2023.

Returnal

First PS5 exclusive, Returnal is a 3D Shooter, Roguelite style, developed by Housemarque. The game features astronaut Selene, having crash-landed on the exoplanet Atropos, a strange world with many secrets. However, for some unknown reason, every death she faces results in a resurrection when crashing on Atropos. Your objective is to solve the mystery hiding behind this time loop and escape from this star. Between neat gameplay and an inspired SF universe, Returnal turns out to be an exhilarating experience that will satisfy you if you’re a fan of the genre.

The Last of Us (the saga)

The Last of Us is a cult game from the end of the PS3 era re-released in Remastered on PS4 in 2014. Developed by Naughty Dog, the dads of the Uncharted saga, The Last of Us confronts us with a post-apocalyptic universe where a virus with fungal origins, called cordyceps, has almost entirely decimated humanity. The particularity of this mushroom is to take control of its host by making it extremely aggressive. The story takes place in 2033, 20 years after the start of the epidemic. You play as Joel, a fifty-year-old who has lost his daughter, who must escort Ellie, a teenager immune to cordyceps. The girl turns out to be humanity’s last hope to develop a vaccine with the help of her antibodies. What makes the strength of the title is its writing and its nuanced characters. Over the course of their adventure, the two protagonists will forge links, giving Joel a second chance to be a father. One thing is certain, you will clearly not come out of this trip unscathed. A sequel was released in 2020 on PS4, The Last of Us Part II. Where the theme of the first was love, this second opus emphasizes hatred and reveals ever more the cruelty of this universe.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the conclusion of the adventures of Nathan Drake developed by Naughty Dog. Several years after retiring from treasure hunting, Drake finds himself forced back into service when his brother, Sam, resurfaces. In the footsteps of Henry Avery, a great pirate of the late 17th century, the two brothers seek to find his lost treasure. Driven by an impeccable technique, a simple but effective gameplay and a narration mastered from start to finish, the title of Naughty Dog puts the small dishes in the big ones. The game was also followed by a stand alone, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. A conclusion in the image of this video game saga, grandiose!

Then, Americans will be able to access it from June 13. In Europe, we will therefore be the last to be able to switch to a more expensive subscription. since they arrive from next June 23.

Hideo Kojima has definitely been the center of attention in recent weeks. Some time ago, many rumors had suggested a potential takeover of Kojima studios by the giant Sony, which the director had then denied. In question, the presence of Death Stranding on a promotional banner for PlayStation games. Hideo Kojima had indicated that this was only a collaboration, that he was delighted to work with the Japanese company but that his studios would remain independent.

So we thought we were done with the Kojima and PlayStation rumors. Until, on April 24, Hideo posted a photo on Twitter, which relaunched the infernal gossip machine. The director is reportedly working on a big project with Sony.

PlayStation x Kojima, the return?

After having worked in collaboration with PlayStation for Death Stranding, it may well be that Hideo Kojima puts the cover back. The eagle eyes of his community have indeed noticed a key detail in a photo posted on Twitter.

Don’t you notice? Look again! In the right corner of the photo, on a TV cabinet, we notice a very revealing object. It is indeed a PlayStation development kit, used for, as its name suggests, the development of video games and new Sony productions. This kit is of course intended for professionals only and is ubiquitous in one place in particular… PlayStation HQ.

Millennium

The presence of this system would indeed indicate that Hideo Kojima would potentially be on the premises of PlayStation. In the center of the image is a chair, similar to those attributed to directors or actors on Hollywood sets. Meaning that, whatever the current project, Kojima plays a key role in it.

In the comments of the Tweet in question, many users are hoping a sequel to Death Stranding, the post-apocalyptic game that had met with huge success around the world. Maybe the project is on the way, who knows?

Kojima already with Xbox?

On the competition side, it would seem that Kojima is also on a project in collaboration with Xbox. Just like in the case of the potential collaboration between the director and PlayStation, nothing has yet been confirmed by the companies involved. However, according to many sources, a collaboration would be in progress. This is the case of Jeff Grub (the journalist) who, in his program Grubbsnaxrevealed that the cloud project between Xbox and Hideo Kojima would, at present, be “still relevant”.

Millennium

In any case, Hideo Kojima now only has to confirm all these theories, or deny them. We will see what the director has in store for us and with which company(ies) he has chosen to work for his future projects. All this does not promise only positive, and Kojima fans will have plenty to worry about. What is certain is that he is currently working on a project “revolutionary”which should be released soon.
