It’s the new trend in the video game industry: everyone buys everyone out! While the last few days have been animated by the rumor of a takeover of Electronic Arts by Amazon, it is Sony who surprises his little world by announcing the acquisition of a brand new studio. Savage Game Studios, it may not mean anything to you, but it is a very important step in the evolution of Sony’s activities.

Sony on mobiles, it’s done!

PlayStation 5, PC, PS VR 2… Sony already had plenty to do, but as Jim Ryan had announced, the Japanese firm has every intention of broadening its horizons and acquiring new studios. Thus, on this Monday morning, the manufacturer announces the acquisition of Savage Game Studios, at the same time recording its arrival on the mobile game market. To mark this entry, Sony has taken over a studio made up of industry veterans and accustomed to the ecosystem of the mobile world. Savage Game Studios is based in Helsinki, Finland and has been operating since 2020 on Android and iOS. We find at its head Michail Katkoff and Nadjim Adjir, defectors from Rovio (the first also passed through Zynga and Supercell) and the duo is completed by Michael McManus, a former Insomniac Games. Not really new kids then!

AAA action game in the works

In accordance with its new policy, Sony is embarking on mobile games and Savage Game Studios, of course, did not wait for this announcement to get to work. In a press release, we learn that the proteges of the Finnish studio are preparing a AAA action game for mobile platforms, namely Android and iOS. For the time being, this is all that has emerged about this acquisition, no figures or titles having circulated. For Savage Game Studios, this is obviously a very important act in its young history. Sony, meanwhile, is increasingly asserting itself as a (very) ambitious firm for the future. To manage the PlayStation ecosystem, the arrival of the future PS VR 2, adaptations on PC and now mobile games, you will have to be solid! But it’s a bit the common lot of all manufacturers now.

Special mention to the yokai abilities, which come to refine a gameplay opening the door to dozens of hours of experimentation with builds and ways to unsolder the demon surgically. Content that is frankly very generous and pleasant to browse, which counterbalances a dated technique and a level-design without any real bang.

Stuck in a space station, you and your partner will have to escape by dealing with the absence of gravity. On the pure gameplay side, think of all those physics-based games like Octodad or Get Over it. Here each key used controls a member of your astronaut’s body and you will have small puzzles to solve and many obstacles to avoid if you want to get out alive. A very nice game, however if you have the patience to get used to its rather particular handling.

After 10 years of waiting following its announcement, the 3rd opus of Mount & Blade finally leaves the early access (where it rained, but encountered difficult phases) to find itself on the market.

The main quality of Mount & Blade II – Bannerlord is to let the player act as he wishes, without a royal road to victory. He is then a real actor and not just a simple spectator, or repeater, of effective actions.

All the possibilities do not have the same goal, and everything is valid to lead simple people through really engaging stories, towards their destiny.

The world of Calradia is at the heart of this system, a tangle of cities, villages, clans, which interact in different ways and which gives a real relief to the whole.

All the biases make it a good RPG. No epic quest here, but a long and slow evolution of which you will only be a part.

The PS5 version is particularly successful visually.

With its unprecedented richness, its enormous replayability, this game will quickly become a real obsession for addicted players!

We’re not aware of any freshly sent out PlayStation Direct invites, but who knows – maybe Sony can surprise today like Amazon yesterday, and kick off a sale unexpectedly. Either way, the suspense remains.

Update of 26/10/2022, 09:20: After the 3rd October drop, PlayStation Direct sales are not expected to resume until November. The new bundle with Modern Warfare 2 has still not been sold. But there’s still a slight hope that PlayStation Direct (where the bundle is first set to appear as an exclusive) will do the same for tomorrow’s launch, Friday 28th October.

And if not: In general, the sale of the “Call of Duty” bundle shouldn’t be long in the making, so we could see the next drop relatively early in November. But maybe Sony will surprise us again when the new CoD comes out. Either way, the suspense remains.

Update of 10/25/2022, 12:55 p.m.: The drop on PlayStation Direct has now expired. What’s exciting is that the new official bundle with CoD Modern Warfare apparently hasn’t sold out yet. The release date is still set for 28.10. Will there still be a drop this week on PS Direct?

When did PlayStation Direct last drop? The distributor last sold the PS5 on October 3 and October 10. Each time, there were invitations for a closed drop. Once this drop was completed, a big sale open to all was also organized. But since then everything has been quiet again.

Metro Exodus

Stunning graphically and aesthetically, Metro Exodus has a dark vibe that alone is worth the trip. Horrifying in what it tells and in what it exhibits on screen With bloodthirsty monsters in a Russia ravaged by nuclear war, the title from 4A Games offers a large playground made up of varied environments bathed in a neat soundtrack. The live moments with the Aurora crew ring true: they bring heart and soul to this production. Although it is not as perfect as we would have liked, Metro Exodus will take you into a scary universe, which is ideal if you are looking for a little terror in this period.

Observe: System Redux

The Very Orwellian Observe takes place in a post-apocalyptic futuristic Poland. Transhumanism, which has become legion in the streets of the city, is hit by a computer parasite, the Nanophage. Observer is surely the most successful horror title from the Bloober Team. Without putting aside the roots of horror with disturbing visuals and jumpscares, the software offers quite rich gameplay for the genre it targets with drag and drop, cybernetic sights to detect traces (organic, computer), and above all a stress management system. Because yes, here, the hero can find himself in a situation of intense stress and… die. This sci-fi thriller with complex ramifications is a murky and violent dive into an inhospitable universe.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan and Little Hope

We cheat a bit with this anthology The Dark Pictures since we are not talking about one but two games, namely the first two episodes of the saga. Accessible with PlayStation Plus Extra, Man of Medan and Little Hope plunge us into two very different worlds. The first takes place in a ghost ship lost in the ocean, while the second takes place in the misty plains of a New England town against a backdrop of witchcraft. Until Dawn

Alongside The Quarry (which is not available in the PS Plus Extra), Until Dawn is Supermassive Games’ most successful work. The studio, which specializes in horrific narrative games, tells the story of 8 young adults who go on vacation far from any living soul. At least, that’s what they think. Danger lurks around their cabin, and several of the protagonists will perish if the player misses their QTEs and/or makes bad decisions. With charactersendearing”, its neat atmosphere paying homage to slasher movies and its difficult choices, Until Dawn ticks all the boxes for successful Interactive Drama. In addition to being truly distressing during certain sequences.

SOMA

Made by psychological horror game specialists, Frictional Games, SOMA uses the basics of Amnesia without serving the same soup. In Simon’s eyes, the player will travel through an underwater universe populated by aggressive creatures. Like the developer’s other titles, it’s best to avoid clashes with the bestiary. Luckily, the specifics of the monsters make it possible to bring variations to the gameplay largely based on hide-and-seek. As for the themes of the game, we find transhumanism, a movement advocating the use of technologies to improve the human being. SOMA will make you feel uncomfortable and surprise you.

Transference

Endowed with a heavy atmosphere and a horrifying atmosphere that allows itself various jumpscares, Transference plunges the player into the twists and turns of the mind of Raymond Hayes, a brilliant scientist. This unhealthy excursion leads to an alternation between two sides of reality, each transforming as buried memories emerge. Transference relies on its chaotic atmosphere to distill terror and cause apprehension in the hearts of players. The adventure being very short (less than three hours to complete it), it can be an ideal choice for those in a hurry. It should be noted that the software is compatible with the PSVR of the PlayStation 4 for even more visceral sensations.

Get Even

Get Even is a first-person narrative game in which the storyline is the main force. In the skin of Cole Black, an amnesiac mercenary, the player finds himself in the pay of a mysterious jailer who makes him relive certain traumatic memories through a helmet with advanced technology. Taking place in a mental asylum, Get Even is above all an exploration game with a heavy atmosphere. The general atmosphere of the creation of The Farm 51 is a frank success : it will certainly manage to arouse some chills even in the most hardened.

About PlayStation Plus

Every month, PlayStation offers free games to add to its library through PS Plus. We explain everything about this service for the PS4 and PS5 which gives access to a very large catalog of games for a monthly subscription.

Since June, Sony has replaced its old PlayStation Plus subscription format with a new version of the same name, also available to all owners of PS4 or PS5 consoles. But the service now comes in three subscription tiers, with evolving benefits.

Three subscription levels

This is the basic package that takes over the old PlayStation Plus. It provides access to several games offered each month, to be downloaded to add them to its game library. They remain accessible as long as the subscription is in progress. Sony also offers access to online gaming (in cooperation, multiplayer or to share certain games with friends who do not have them), to cloud storage space for game saves (100 GB), to discounts and exclusive content on the PS Store, the console store, and gives the possibility of obtaining aid for home games.

For PS5 owners, this subscription level allows you to play around twenty successful PS4 titles for free (God of War, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, Fallout 4…).

It includes all the advantages of the Essential level. But its great added value is the catalog of games offered: more than 400 PS4 and PS5 games are thus available for download. It includes in particular the great successes of the PlayStation (The Last of Us, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Strandingetc.), but also flagship titles from third-party publishers (Mortal Kombat 11, NBA 2K22, Batman: Arkham Knight, Doom, etc.). Added to this is access to Ubisoft+ Classic games, a selection of emblematic titles from the French video game giant (the franchises Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, The Division, The Crew, Watch Dogs...).

PlayStation Plus Premium

The highest level of the service will obviously offer all that Sony has in its pocket. We find all the cumulative advantages of the first two levels and also the possibility of playing by download or streaming even older PlayStation games (PS1, PS2, PS3 and the PSP portable console).

The new PlayStation Plus subscription was born from the merger of Sony’s two old subscriptions, PlayStation Plus (first name) and PlayStation Now, which notably offered older games to play after downloading them or streaming them from its console. (PS1, PS2, PS3 and the portable console PSP), but also possibly on a computer. The PS Plus Premium takes over this streaming game function, with the possibility of also playing PS4 games without downloading.

This expensive package (16.99 euros per month) also offers players trial versions of recent games (Horizon Forbidden West, Lego City Uncover, Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, etc.), with a defined time (1h to 5h) during which it is possible to test for free. If you then purchase the game, you can keep your save and continue.

The PlayStation Plus subscription starts at 8.99 euros per month for the Essential level (24.99 euros per quarter or 59.99 euros for 12 months).

The PlayStation Plus Extra is offered at 13.99 euros per month or 39.99 euros for three months or 99.99 euros for one year.
