Williams is the glue that holds Poltergeist together – funny, sexy, and assertive, with Diane much more active than her husband to throwing herself into danger. When Tangina tells her, “I could do absolutely nothing without your faith in this world and your love for the children,” Williams shows the maternal conviction to back it up. Poltergeist was intended as a scare machine, first and foremost, and it updates the classic haunted house movie without losing its appeal to a general audience.
The revelation that the Freelings’ house and neighborhood was built atop the dead – only headstones were moved, not the bodies – suggests a darker message about American expansion, with families gobbling up land that was never theirs to claim. This higher energy photon can in principle be employed to expand the use of low-energy sunlight in solar cells or photochemical reactions which otherwise require UV light for activation. The use of molecular rubies can thus help to reduce the impact of environmentally damaging processes such as mining of precious metals or rare earth elements and to expand photochemistry to more sustainable processes.
Chromium compounds as a promising alternative
Most photochemical and photophysical applications such as phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes, dye-sensitized solar cells, or light-driven chemical reactions use precious metals such as gold, platinum, ruthenium, iridium, or rare earth metals. However, precious metals are expensive because they are scarce while rare earth elements are only mined in a few countries, in China in particular. Furthermore, their extraction often involves considerable consumption of water, energy, and chemicals. In some cases, such as gold mining, highly toxic substances such as cyanide or mercury are employed.
On the other hand, resources of the metal chromium, which gets its name from the ancient Greek word for color, are 10,000 times more plentiful in the Earth’s crust than those of platinum and 100,000 times greater than those of iridium, meaning that it is available in sufficient quantities. “Unfortunately, the photophysical properties of abundant metals like chromium or iron are just not good enough to be useful in technological applications, especially when it comes to the lifetimes and energies of their electronically excited states,” explained Professor Katja Heinze of JGU’s Department of Chemistry. A significant progress in this regard has been made only in the last few years, with Heinze’s team being one of the main contributors. They were also involved in the development of so-called molecular rubies. These are soluble molecular compounds which possess exceptionally good excited state characteristics. Molecular rubies have already been used as molecular optical thermometers and pressure sensors.
Direct observation of the energy transfer processes thanks to new large-scale laser device
The team of scientists from Mainz and Berlin has now achieved yet another breakthrough. “In the process, we observed a novel mechanism and understood the high efficiency of the new chromium compounds in detail,” said Professor Christoph Kerzig. The scientists managed to directly observe the unusual energy transfer pathway using a laser setup recently installed in the Kerzig group. This so-called laser flash photolysis technique allowed them to detect all intermediates that are important for the upconversion mechanisms. Furthermore, quantitative laser experiments established the absence of inherent energy loss channels and side reactions, which lays the grounds for efficient applications of this underexplored way to transfer and convert solar energy with chromium compounds.
Consequently, scientists may be able to develop new light-driven reactions using the common metal chromium in the future instead of using the rare, more costly ruthenium and iridium compounds, which today are still the most frequently used. “Together with our partners at BAM in Berlin and other universities we will continue to push on with our efforts to develop a more sustainable photochemistry,” emphasized Professor Katja Heinze.
The group’s results have been published in Angewandte Chemie, classified as a Hot Paper. The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Chemical Industry Funds are funding this research. In 2018, the German Research Foundation set up the priority program Light Controlled Reactivity of Metal Complexes (SPP 2102), coordinated by Professor Katja Heinze with the second funding period having started in 2022.

This quirky and surreal comedy about a laundromat owner undergoing an audit by the IRS while hopping multiverses and battling an intergalactic force of bagel-worshippers is 2022’s first word-of-mouth hit. Stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan are receiving unanimous praise for their performances, and both have the kind of inspirational career narrative that recently helped Troy Kotsur win Best Supporting Actor for CODA.

God’s Creatures
This is the other Paul Mescal movie A24 is distributing in 2022. Set in an Irish fishing town, God’s Creaturesis about a mother forced to choose between family and community. Mescal plays her prodigal son, whose return home catalyzes the film’s sinister events. Word out of Cannes is that this is an atmospheric, slow-burn thriller.
Tepid reviews suggest God’s Creatures probably isn’t a major contender, but even the film’s critics are raving about Emily Watson’s performance. The movie’s slim chances overall shouldn’t dispel her viability in the Best Leading Actress race. No Actress contender this year represented a Best Picture nominee, and a few years ago Glenn Close was the odds-on favorite for The Wifea movie that wasn’t recognized in any other category.

Kelly Reichardt’s First Cowwas a critical hit in 2020. The New York Film Critics Circle, among the first organizations every year to announce winners, awarded it Best Film, spurring serious talk of Reichardt getting, at the very least, a writing nomination. The movie’s success with critics, though, didn’t translate to success at the Oscars, but it did put Reichardt on the map in a new way. Her latest, Showing Upjust premiered to positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival.
Michelle Williams stars as an artist experiencing a midlife crisis during a pivotal moment in her career. Williams is already a strong Best Supporting Actress contender for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming The Fabelmans. Goodwill generated by that guaranteed awards player may just rub off on this quaint slice-of-life comedy and get Reichardt some long-overdue recognition.
The Whale
Darren Aronofsky’s follow-up to the oft-maligned mother!(2017) stars Brendan Fraser as a 600-pound English professor grieving the death of his partner and trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter. Without a trailer or any promotional images, the buzz surrounding The Whalehas mostly been generated by its similarity to The WrestlerAronofsky’s comeback vehicle for Mickey Rourke.
Like that film about a washed-up performer seeking redemption, The Whale provides Brendan Fraser an opportunity to exercise some serious dramatic chops and be a sought-after name in Hollywood again. Hong Chauwho received an awards push for her performance in Alexander Payne’s otherwise dismissed Downsizinghas a significant role as Fraser’s nurse and could represent the film in Best Supporting Actress (along with rising talent Sadie Sink, who plays Fraser’s daughter). It is based on a particularly talky play that ponders classic literature and set entirely in the main character’s living room, so Adapted Screenplay is also a possibility. A24 is rumored to be positioning the movie for a TIFF or Venice premiere, where it will likely begin a path toward nominations in several major categories.

This is the other Paul Mescal movie A24 is distributing in 2022. Set in an Irish fishing town, God’s Creaturesis about a mother forced to choose between family and community. Mescal plays her prodigal son, whose return home catalyzes the film’s sinister events. Word out of Cannes is that this is an atmospheric, slow-burn thriller.
Tepid reviews suggest God’s Creatures probably isn’t a major contender, but even the film’s critics are raving about Emily Watson’s performance. The movie’s slim chances overall shouldn’t dispel her viability in the Best Leading Actress race. No Actress contender this year represented a Best Picture nominee, and a few years ago Glenn Close was the odds-on favorite for The Wifea movie that wasn’t recognized in any other category.

Kelly Reichardt’s First Cowwas a critical hit in 2020. The New York Film Critics Circle, among the first organizations every year to announce winners, awarded it Best Film, spurring serious talk of Reichardt getting, at the very least, a writing nomination. The movie’s success with critics, though, didn’t translate to success at the Oscars, but it did put Reichardt on the map in a new way. Her latest, Showing Upjust premiered to positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival.
Michelle Williams stars as an artist experiencing a midlife crisis during a pivotal moment in her career. Williams is already a strong Best Supporting Actress contender for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming The Fabelmans. Goodwill generated by that guaranteed awards player may just rub off on this quaint slice-of-life comedy and get Reichardt some long-overdue recognition.
The Whale
Darren Aronofsky’s follow-up to the oft-maligned mother!(2017) stars Brendan Fraser as a 600-pound English professor grieving the death of his partner and trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter. Without a trailer or any promotional images, the buzz surrounding The Whalehas mostly been generated by its similarity to The WrestlerAronofsky’s comeback vehicle for Mickey Rourke.
Like that film about a washed-up performer seeking redemption, The Whale provides Brendan Fraser an opportunity to exercise some serious dramatic chops and be a sought-after name in Hollywood again. Hong Chauwho received an awards push for her performance in Alexander Payne’s otherwise dismissed Downsizinghas a significant role as Fraser’s nurse and could represent the film in Best Supporting Actress (along with rising talent Sadie Sink, who plays Fraser’s daughter). It is based on a particularly talky play that ponders classic literature and set entirely in the main character’s living room, so Adapted Screenplay is also a possibility. A24 is rumored to be positioning the movie for a TIFF or Venice premiere, where it will likely begin a path toward nominations in several major categories.

Researchers at The University of Queensland led a collaborative study that examined the remnants of ocean floors in eastern Australia and central Asia and applied a method to date the age of calcite trapped inside.
Dr Renjie Zhou from UQ’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences said the findings could make it easier to source critical minerals used in renewable and clean technologies.
“Calcite and other hydrothermal minerals are often observed in critical mineral deposits and form under mineralising fluid activities,” Dr Zhou said.
“Our work shows that we can trace the history of fluids in the Earth’s crust and see when and what mineral resources they might generate.”
The renewable energy sector is continuing to grow rapidly with increasing demand for technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries.
“These often require large quantities of critical minerals,” he said.
“Electric vehicles need up to four times more copper than conventional cars and a single wind turbine uses several tonnes of permanent magnets made of rare earth metals.”
Dr Zhou said being able to study and discover these minerals was going to become increasingly important.
“Researchers across many institutions are doing excellent work in this field, including UQ’s Centre for Geoanalytical Mass Spectrometry,” Dr Zhou said.
“Our hope is to expand our collaboration with industry and academia to increase the understanding and discovery of critical minerals in the future.”

Rock performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, while Chappelle follows at 7 p.m. Sunday, both in Shea’s Buffalo Theatre at 646 Main St. The two Live Nation events sold out rapidly.
Announcing a comedy show the week of the performance is not a common tactic, but for marquee acts looking to fill smaller venues, there’s little danger of missing out on ticket sales. Rock’s Buffalo appearance was announced May 12, with tickets on sale the next day, while Chappelle’s visit was announced Wednesday, with tickets on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday.
For Chappelle, the 3,019-seat venue sold out tickets, which began at $76.50 on Ticketmaster, in less than a half hour. The cheapest ticket on the secondary market for the show was $172 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Each comedian has three decades of commercial success from his stand-up routines and appearances in movies and TV. In its top 50 comedians of all-time rankings released in 2017, Rolling Stone included both in the top 10, with Chappelle at 9 and Rock at 5.
