While it starts off more as a slow-burn horror filmthis movie starts to take a turn around the halfway mark and truly make you squeal in shock at what you are witnessing in front of you, from start to end. It was one of the first horror films in a couple of years that truly had me feeling unsettled the whole way through, and today, we’re going to go over my top nine moments from it that I just can’t get over.

When Maxine Is First Being Watched In The Woods By Pearl
When I tell you I screamed.
I knew the moment that Maxine (played by Mia Goth) went into those woods, we were going to see something happen. It was the very beginning of X so I didn’t expect anyone to die instantly, but I knew there was going to just be something that would make my body shiver.
And sure enough, there was, in the way background before Maxine jumped into the water – Pearl (also played by Mia Goth) was standing there far in the distance all menacingly before she vanished behind a tree. Ooh, boy.

When Maxine Is Followed By The Alligator
Okay, can we be honest right now? Why is it that horror movie characters always make such poor decisions?
While even the king of horror himself, Stephen King, liked X, I can’t help but think about this scene and how stupid it was for Maxine to go into the river. I mean, you are in an unknown area and you don’t know what the heck is under the water and she thought it would be the loveliest time for a swim? Tell me where this makes sense, man. I am still so peeved about it.
And then it goes and confirms my theory that the alligator was literally right after her before she yanked herself out of the water. Swear, I have never screamed harder at my television.

When Pearl Kills RJ For Refusing Her Advances – And Dances Around His Body
I have to admit – the fact that X’sPearl is getting her own prequel is pretty cool because she’s one of the first horror movie characters I feel has some kind of strange backstory that I want to know, and that started with this. Pearl killing RJ (Owen Campbell) because he wouldn’t touch her was something that I was not expecting.
I genuinely thought that Howard (Stephen Ure) was going to end up being the murderer at first but the fact that it started out with this frail grandma threw my head for a loop.

When Lorraine Discovers The Corpse In The Old Couple’s Basement
Then this scene made everything so much darker. In X, when Lorraine (played by Jenna Ortega) is trapped down in the basement of Howard’s home as she is looking for RJ, she discovers the corpse hanging down there, and if you connect the dots, the boy had the same face of the man that was featured on a milk carton we saw earlier in the film.
Ortega’s scream is on par with some of the best scream queens out there, and the graphic-ness of the body is enough to make any horror fan turn away in disgust. Yuck.

When Howard Cuts Off Lorraine’s Fingers When She Tries To Escape
Another moment that had me squirming in my seat during X was when it looked as if Lorraine had finally found a way to escape, using an old axe to cut a way through the wooden door of the basement and reach for the lock, and Howard came out of nowhere and sliced off her fingers.
It’s quick, painful, and followed by a scream that tears into your soul. It made me feel so bad for Lorraine – the poor girl was just dragged along into this because her boyfriend wanted to work on this film and now she’s paying the price. But damn, can Jenna Ortega act.

When Pearl Pushes Bobby-Lynne Into The Pond – And She’s Eaten By The Alligator
See I told you that the alligator would be something significant.
In X, Bobby-Lynne (played by Brittany Snow) leaves the cabin they are staying in on the farm property to search for her boyfriend and comes across Pearl. After Pearl curses her out even though Bobby-Lynne tries to help her, Pearl pushes her into the lake.
And instantly, Bobby-Lynne is consumed by alligators. It’s bloody, gross, and a slow-scene that has you on the edge of your seat until you see those last bubbles stop appearing and you know she’s gone. What makes it even worse is that Howard comes to Pearl’s side not that long after and is completely unfazed. Talk about a killer couple.

Did anyone else feel so bad for Maxine in this scene?
With all the murders going on in X, Howard and Pearl find private time in their cabin and end up getting intimate – all while Maxine, who is trying to hide from these two crazies, is underneath the bed and has to army-crawl her way out in order not to be seen by the two elders. It’s so uncomfortable and makes me squirm in every way possible.

When Maxine finds a way to free Lorraine in X, Lorraine runs away, saying that she hates that she came here with them and hates everyone, understandably scared and wanting to leave. But as soon as Lorraine is out the door, she is shot. Instantly.
And I don’t just mean shot. I mean shot, as in her whole entire head was destroyed with gunshot bullets and all that was left was a carcass. It was such a quick death that it made me rewind the movie to make sure I saw it right because I couldn’t believe she had been killed so quickly. Such a shame.

And When Maxine Ran Over Pearl’s Head In One Last “Screw You”
Last but not least, this scenewas everything during the X ending. When Maxine is able to survive Pearl’s gunshot attempt, she is able to grab the keys and run to the van, all while Pearl is cursing her out.
Maxine, in one last attempt to say “screw you,” reverses the car and runs directly over the head of Pearl, crushing and killing her instantly, saying that this trip will be their “little secret,” before driving off. Talk about the best way to end a movie, with your final girl killing all her enemies. I loved it – and hated all the gore that came with it, but yay for Maxine, am I right?

Born William Mauldin Hopkins on Feb. 2, 1938, in Greenville, South Carolina, he pursued an interest in the arts after finishing service with the Army, which he joined at the age of 16.
He performed in local theater before heading to New York for an off-Broadway production, and soon after, received a scholarship to an acting school at the Desilu-Cahuenga Studios in Hollywood with Diane Davis as his agent.
Hopkins made his on-screen debut in 1966 on an episode of “The Phyllis Diller Show.”
“After the Phyllis Diller thing, I did a ‘Gunsmoke,’ then ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ playing Goober’s helper,” he said. “George Lindsey always said he was the one who started my career.”
He portrayed Crazy Lee in the ‘69 western about a group of aging outlaws in “The Wild Bunch,” and became a favorite of director Sam Peckinpah, who cast him as a bank robber in “The Gateway” in 1972 and then a weapons expert alongside James Caan in the ‘75 flick “The Killer Elite.”
Hopkins worked with Burt Reynolds and Ned Beatty in “White Lightning,” and Brad Davis and Randy Quaid in “Midnight Express.”
He was also known for working with Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford in the George Lucas film “American Graffiti.”

“Happening” is the sophomore feature of French director Audrey Diwan (“Losing It”). Adapted from Annie Ernaux’s semi-autobiographical novel, the film takes place in 1960s France and centers on a promising young student who gets pregnant at a time when abortions aren’t legal in the country. The movie’s official logline reads: “Anne is a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she falls pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background disappearing. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne resolves to act, even if she has to confront shame and pain, even if she must risk prison to do so.”
In Variety’s review, film critic Guy Lodge praised “Happening” and called it timely, powerful and “quietly devastating.”
“Audrey Diwan’s quietly devastating sophomore feature is the latest in an ongoing run of tough, emotionally intelligent art films dealing frankly with the subject of abortion access,” he wrote.
After its warm reception at Venice, “Happening” is poised to be a major contender for France’s official Oscar entry for best international film. Diwan co-wrote the screenplay with Marcia Romano. “Happening” was produced by Rectangle Productions’ Édouard Weil and co-produced by Srab Films.
IFC Films has been hot on the festival circuit, recently nabbing three big titles — Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island,” Jacques Audiard’s “Paris, 13th District” and Paul Verhoeven’s buzzy “Benedetta” — at Cannes Film Festival. The company recently released “The Painted Bird,” which was shortlisted for best international feature at the 92nd Oscars.

EXCLUSIVE: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the political satire Land of Dreams, directed by Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari, which is making its North American premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The global indie distributor has slated the film for a day-and-date theatrical release in 10 of the top 20 markets—including in Los Angeles and New York—this fall. Set in a near-future America which has closed its borders and become more insular than ever, the story follows Simin (Sheila Vand), an Iranian American woman on a journey to discover the core of what it means to be a free American. Simin works for the Census Bureau—the most important government agency of her time. In efforts to understand and control its populous, the government has begun a program to record the citizens’ dreams. Simin, one of the Census Bureau’s lead dream catchers, is unaware of this devious plot. As she forms connections with love-struck poet Mark (William Moseley) and a cynical detective (Matt Dillon) tasked with her protection, Simin’s morals, connection to community and safety become tested in unforeseeable ways.
In addition to Vand (Snowpiercer), Moseley (Medieval) and Dillon (Capone), Land of Dreams stars Isabella Rossellini (Spaceman), Joaquim De Almeida (Queen of the South), Christopher McDonald (American Crime Story), Anna Gunn (Sully) and Gaius Charles (Alice), among others. Azari and Jean-Claude Carrière (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) wrote the script, based on Neshat’s story. When you talk about A24 as an entertainment company, most of us think about their horror movies. At least horror fans do. Even though they were only founded in 2012, which in the grand scheme isn’t as long as other companies, they’ve helped bring forth some of the best, modern horror movies around. Would the horror world be the same without The VVitch (2015) or X (2022)? Some might disagree, but I certainly don’t think so.
There are quite a few A24 horror films. So, for this ranking, I focused on picking the top five A24 horror movies and then ranking them. It wasn’t easy.
Here are my top 5—ranked from best to worst. Let’s begin.
1. X (2022)
(A24)
Most likely, it’s controversial for this to be at number one. But it’s so good, it deserves to be at the top. How many original slashers exist in the world? Not as many as there should be. As much as we love long-running slasher franchises, finding a fresh take on a very well-tread genre is rare. This movie captures the essence of iconic slashers like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The cast is very stacked, the plot fun, and it has a great twist in terms of the final girl. Plus, the ‘70s aesthetic is phenomenal, the gore is wild, and it’s about pornstars. It’s very much one of the best horror movies of the year and a triumph for A24.
2. The VVitch (2015)
(A24, Elevation Pictures, and Universal Pictures)
This is one of those movies that requires more than one watch. In fact, I didn’t love it right away myself. But now it’s truly a revelation, especially where feminist horror is concerned. It’d be easy to dismiss this as a simple, supernatural horror film. Yet, it’s much more than that. There’s a very deliberate message about independence, religious constriction, sexuality, and so on. The film is set in the 1630s and focuses on Thomasin (Anna Taylor-Joy), and her Puritan family, who are dealing with an evil force in the woods past their farm. Thomasin slowly embraces liberation through violent acts, feeling power and control for once in her life. Something she never would have if she’d been forced to continue with her family’s religious expectations. Overall this is supernatural done right because—let’s face it—sometimes slow burn is worth it.
3. The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)
(A24 and DirecTV Cinema)
So underrated that it earned its spot this high on the list. Letting a horror movie with Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka flop was a big mistake. This is a gem that people might write off due to the low box office numbers. Yet, the reality is that it’s perfectly eerie and makes you second guess what’s really going on. It has that capability to deeply affect folks emotionally. Just like psychological horror is supposed to do. It deserves to be mentioned more often when talking about A24’s horror catalog.
4. Hereditary (2018)
(A24)
Some things aren’t what they seem, and in this movie, that rings extremely true. The reason this is lower on the list is that it went the typical route. There aren’t quite as many surprise twists as I’d like, but the acting and scares make up for any of the downsides. If anything, Toni Colette’s performance (that dinner table scene, am I right?) is what people remember the most. And those final 10-20 minutes are absolutely bananas. Even if the movie doesn’t do a lot for you for the full run time, there’s still something to take from it as the ending is quite something.
5. Midsummer (2019)
(A24 and Nordisk Film)
Grief is a powerful thing and when your partner (plus his garbage friends) are unsupportive, it’s even more hellish. The plot follows a very boring/dysfunctional couple, Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor), who travel with their friends to Sweden for a midsummer festival. Of course, this idyllic community isn’t all that it seems, and the creep factor keeps rising throughout.
I have some issues with this film, in part, due to its centering of white feminism/womanhood. But the visuals are stunning (the May Queen outfit is so gorgeous that it should have its own standalone film), so it’s hard not to admire that aspect of the film. Also, problems with that particular brand of feminism aside, watching a garbage man not end up on top is fairly satisfying. So, it’s still in my top 5—just at the bottom of the list.

Something she never would have if she’d been forced to continue with her family’s religious expectations. Overall this is supernatural done right because—let’s face it—sometimes slow burn is worth it.
3. The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)
(A24 and DirecTV Cinema)
So underrated that it earned its spot this high on the list. Letting a horror movie with Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka flop was a big mistake. This is a gem that people might write off due to the low box office numbers. Yet, the reality is that it’s perfectly eerie and makes you second guess what’s really going on. It has that capability to deeply affect folks emotionally. Just like psychological horror is supposed to do. It deserves to be mentioned more often when talking about A24’s horror catalog.
4. Hereditary (2018)
(A24)
Some things aren’t what they seem, and in this movie, that rings extremely true. The reason this is lower on the list is that it went the typical route. There aren’t quite as many surprise twists as I’d like, but the acting and scares make up for any of the downsides. If anything, Toni Colette’s performance (that dinner table scene, am I right?) is what people remember the most. And those final 10-20 minutes are absolutely bananas. Even if the movie doesn’t do a lot for you for the full run time, there’s still something to take from it as the ending is quite something.
5. Midsummer (2019)
(A24 and Nordisk Film)
Grief is a powerful thing and when your partner (plus his garbage friends) are unsupportive, it’s even more hellish. The plot follows a very boring/dysfunctional couple, Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor), who travel with their friends to Sweden for a midsummer festival. Of course, this idyllic community isn’t all that it seems, and the creep factor keeps rising throughout.
I have some issues with this film, in part, due to its centering of white feminism/womanhood. But the visuals are stunning (the May Queen outfit is so gorgeous that it should have its own standalone film), so it’s hard not to admire that aspect of the film. Also, problems with that particular brand of feminism aside, watching a garbage man not end up on top is fairly satisfying. So, it’s still in my top 5—just at the bottom of the list.

The 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival is also bringing its delegates a taste of Anim!Arte through a special package to be screened on June 03, 2022, 11.30 am at RR-III, Films Division Complex.
The package consisting of 11 films from different countries including Brazil was curated by award-winning animation filmmaker Alexandre Juruena. Since 2001, he has curated sixteen editions of the Anim!Arte. His award-winning films include ‘Get out of the Mud’, ‘Jacaré’ and ‘Suplica Cearense’. Filmmaker and curator Tehzeeb Khurana will present the films at #MIFF2022.

A city of iron hosts a lavish government parade, bringing joy and gifts to the calm life of its citizens. Two outside observers -the first through a tall window and the second through the lens of a camera- are the only ones to notice a group of protesters blocking the path of the main vehicle to call attention to an unjust tragedy. This film from Mexico is directed by Marcos Almada Rivero.

At a time of war, the film presents an art attack made with love. This film from Slovakia is directed by Samuel Chovan.

Zone #5 DOCTOR STRANGE:
For the next zone, we will dive into the character of Doctor Strange. Entering a cross-dimensional portal, titled New York Mirror Dimension, visitors can experience teleportation to the iconic location, New York Sanctum Sanctorum. Visitors are also presented with various interactive experiences such as Time Manipulation, Bending Reality, Window through Augmented Reality technology. Zone #6 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY:
This zone will take visitors to an intergalactic adventure with Star Lord and friends in The Guardians of The Galaxy Zone. Visitors will be presented with original props from characters in GOTG, such as The Original Star Lord’s Helmet, Rocket’s Gun In this zone, there will also be an interactive experience suitable for families titled Dancing Baby Groot, where visitors can swaying while enjoying the music of Guardians of the Galaxy, accompanied by Baby Groot who with the latest technology will imitate the movements of the visitors.
Zone #7 BLACK PANTHER:
In this zone, visitors will be taken to the Wakanda Force Field with an ambience and atmosphere built just like we are in Wakanda. Visitors will enter a unique Panther-shaped cave, where visitors can also take pictures with the life-size Action Figure of the leader of Wakanda, Black Panther. After that, visitors will enter Shuri’s Laboratory containing the original costumes of the cast of Black Panther, Shuri’s Gauntlet and other artifacts from the Black Panther Movie and Vibranium Gauntlets, which are advanced weapons with Wakanda technology made by Shuri.

Marvel Studios: A Universe of Heroes Exhibition Indonesia will showcase an impressive collection of more than 60 MCU original movie props, costumes, and concept art from selected movies. Visitors can relive the past decade of Marvel Studios’ storytelling through a wide array of galleries chronicling the epic adventures of their favorite Super Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Wanda Maximoff, Ant-Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Shang Chi, Eternals and Moon Knight.

The first Marvel exhibition in Indonesia, and the largest in Southeast Asia to date, Marvel Studios: A Universe of Heroes, showcasing the epic stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Presenting more than 60 original artifacts – costumes, props and concept art – from a spectrum of films that have been released in theaters and Disney+ Hotstar original series from Marvel Studios spread over 13 unique zones in an area of more than 2,000 M2 located in Pondok Indah Mall 3. Zone #1 JOURNEY OF MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
This is the opening zone that contains a collection of movie posters and brief descriptions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s journey from 2008, Iron Man, to the latest release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) as well as shows from Disney+ Hotstar original series such as Loki, Wandavision. and MoonKnight.
Zone #2 IRON MAN:
Is the zone of the most iconic super hero character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man. In this zone, visitors are presented with iconic experiences ranging from the Stark Industries Tower, the multi-media show called Iron Man Projection Mapping, seeing firsthand Dum-E the Tony Stark’s first personal assistant, and one of the best selfie opportunities in the Hall of Seven Armor (Mark I – VII).
Zone #3 CAPTAIN AMERICA:
Contains the unique experiences of the patriot character, Captain America. Starting from a series of posters a la Smithsonian Museum: Captain America from the iconic scene of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, four shields that have been used; The Vibranium Shield, Wakandan Shield, USO Shield, Stealth Shield, and Sam Wilson’s Shield and Wings. Rows of Captain America costumes featured in Captain America: The First Avenger and the latest Captain America costumes from the Disney+ Hotstar original series, Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Zone #4 THOR:
This zone will welcome visitors with a multi-sensory experience blending immersive graphics and audio technology, reminiscent of the iconic Bifrost Bridge. Entering the world of Asgard, we will be greeted with original costumes and props such as Heimdall, Stormbreaker, Loki’s Scepter, and Mjolnir costumes. Interestingly, there will be a recreation set titled Thor Interactive, where visitors can try to lift Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir. Are you worthy to lift it?
Zone #5 DOCTOR STRANGE:
For the next zone, we will dive into the character of Doctor Strange. Entering a cross-dimensional portal, titled New York Mirror Dimension, visitors can experience teleportation to the iconic location, New York Sanctum Sanctorum. Visitors are also presented with various interactive experiences such as Time Manipulation, Bending Reality, Window through Augmented Reality technology. Visitors can also witness the original costumes of Doctor Strange and Baron Mordo.
Zone #6 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY:
This zone will take visitors to an intergalactic adventure with Star Lord and friends in The Guardians of The Galaxy Zone. Visitors will be presented with original props from characters in GOTG, such as The Original Star Lord’s Helmet, Rocket’s Gun In this zone, there will also be an interactive experience suitable for families titled Dancing Baby Groot, where visitors can swaying while enjoying the music of Guardians of the Galaxy, accompanied by Baby Groot who with the latest technology will imitate the movements of the visitors.
Zone #7 BLACK PANTHER:
In this zone, visitors will be taken to the Wakanda Force Field with an ambience and atmosphere built just like we are in Wakanda. Visitors will enter a unique Panther-shaped cave, where visitors can also take pictures with the life-size Action Figure of the leader of Wakanda, Black Panther. After that, visitors will enter Shuri’s Laboratory containing the original costumes of the cast of Black Panther, Shuri’s Gauntlet and other artifacts from the Black Panther Movie and Vibranium Gauntlets, which are advanced weapons with Wakanda technology made by Shuri.
Zone #8 ANT-MAN:
Entering the Quantum Realm, Visitors will be presented with the original helmet of the Super Hero Ant-Man, the only exclusive in the world. After that, visitors will enter The Quantum Tunnel, the gateway between dimensions in the Ant-Man Movie and experience being Ant-Man controlling the formation of ants in the interactive content titled… Visitors can also see firsthand the original Hank Pym helmet used in the film…
Zone #9 THE AVENGERS:
Entering this zone, visitors will be presented with various collections and content from the film The Avengers. First, visitors will be amazed by the rows of Gauntlet collections on display, belonging to Thanos, Hulk and Iron Man. Also featured is the original Brief-Case containing the Infinity Stones that Captain America brought in the scene of The Avengers: End Game. There is an interactive multimedia presentation where visitors can explore and get information about the power of each Infinity Stones. Also featured are Pepper Potts Costume, Rescue Suit, Thanos Big Figurine and the only one in Southeast Asia, Iron Man Mark LXXXV Armor which was used by Iron Man in the final battle against Thanos in The Avengers: End Game.
Zone #10 BLACK WIDOW:
In this Zone, Visitors can get a closer look at the three original costumes from the Black Widow Movie; The Black Costume used by Black Widow, the Costume from the Task Master, and also the special costume of the Red Guardian. Experience directly being a Secret Agent – Black Widow uses Widow’s Bite – Her signature weapon is a bracelet that emits electric shocks.
Zone #11 SHANG-CHI:
When visiting this zone, visitors will be immediately greeted with original costumes from the film Shang Chi: Legend of The Ten Rings, where visitors can get a closer look at two iconic costumes, namely Sang Chi’s Costume: and his Ten Rings that give immortal power, as well as costumes His enemy is Wen Wu’s Suit who is also his own father and leader of The Mandarins.
Zone #12 ETERNALS:
Entering the Zone from the Eternals Movie, Visitors are presented with the journey of the Eternals couple Ikaris and Sersi. Visitors can see firsthand the costumes used by Ikaris, the most powerful Super Hero among the Eternals with his ability to fly and emit cosmic fire energy from his eyes, and the original costume of Sersi, the Super Hero who has the power to turn any object into any molecule.
Zone #13 HAWKEYE:
Being in this zone, visitors will be presented with costumes from the Disney+ Hotstar series, Hawkeye. Featured in the Original Hawkeye Costume, visitors have the opportunity to see the various bows and arrows used by Hawkeye, a sniper with unmistakable accuracy; and a Ronin costume complete with his sword that appeared in Avengers: End Game.
Zone #14 WANDAVISION:
Entering the Wandavision Zone, visitors will be presented with a vintage-style ambience blending the world of the 40s to 60s by displaying a classic Living Room shaped like the Living Room at Wanda’s House and Vision in the Disney+ Hotstar original series, Wandavision. Visitors can see firsthand the Wanda Maximoff costume she wore in the Wandavision series and the film Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness (2022).
