We caught up with actor Ed Skrein to talk about the ever-growing love for comic book and science fiction movies and his chatted about his preparation for this role.
The Knockturnal: I love Alita: Battle Angel, I saw it last night. It’s pretty incredible. I imagine it was pretty physically demanding. What kind of prep did you put into this?
Ed Skrein: You know what, it wasn’t that physically demanding, you know, to be honest. It was one of the lesser physically demanding roles. I didn’t have to get into any shape for it, because what you see is my face. So I just did the mo-cap suit, and the whole time the CGI body, so you know, as the shoot went on and on, my pot belly just got a little bit bigger ’cause of the Texas brisket and the Texas barbecue. So yeah, I mean, in that regard it was actually like a big pressure taken off. It was the first time I’ve ever done an action movie that I didn’t have to train like a psychopath and diet and think about the physicality all the time. I was able to just go inwards and just find emotion, and then that kind of dictated whatever physicality was there.
The Knockturnal: You didn’t do any prep work on the face, no extra moisturization or exfoliating? ‘Cause it’s really about that face.
Ed Skrein: They made me pretty every day. Yeah, it was four hours in makeup and prosthetics, man. I mean, normally … it takes four hours to make me presentable, you know?
The Knockturnal: What about Alita’s story did you identify with? What attracted you? What about the script made you say yes?
Ed Skrein: Well, I mean, everything … first, you can look at projects from your own character first of all, and it was a delicious prospect to take on such a fun character like Zapan, such a badass character. To be able to explore vanity and ego and power in the way that I was able to was a great proposition. But then every project kind of lives and dies by its lead character. And from the beginning, I loved the character of Alita. I loved her innocence, her empathy, her natural empathy towards people and her natural love and trust. And I was real pleased, when I saw the movie, that that really came across on the screen. I think people will really feel that from her.
The Knockturnal: The world of sci-fi is so ever-growing, and we love it. Why do you think people are so engulfed in this world of comic book nature and sci-fi?
Ed Skrein: You know, the question is a kind of loaded question because it is to suggest that comic book intellectual property is a lesser intellectual property … It’s because there’s truths in them. And in comic book literature, in the same way, like novels, of fictional novels and such, there’s human truths in them, you know? We create these stories for escapism, but also to document and find our own truths in our resistance … in our existence, in our behavior, and in the way that we interact. And so, of course, comic books have truths that we can explore and tell, and I think it’s really just that people are realizing the depth of stories. And we haven’t even scratched the surface. People might be getting sick of comic book movies, but it’s like things just need to keep evolving. There’s so many great stories out there, and I’m so excited to see them all be realized.

The Power of the Dog actor Kodi Smit-McPhee sat down with Variety to talk about an interesting encounter with Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch on set.

Variety first asked McPhee if he is involved in some form in the upcoming sequel, but the former X-Men actor dodged the question by telling a story centered around Cumberbatch instead.
McPhee shared an interesting conversation with Cumberbatch while filming The Power of the Dog, with him asking the MCU star if he is “in the contract moving forward.” However, the actor revealed that Cumberbatch “doesn’t let out a secret,” while also admitting that he was “slightly insulted” with the actor’s “protective” nature about the matter:
“Uh listen, I had this conversation with Benedict [laughs] on set [of The Power of the Dog]…when he was in full method acting as well, and I was like, ‘Listen, I know you’re the dude in the boots right now with the rope, but you need to tell me: am I in the contract moving forward?’ And that guy doesn’t let out a secret. Like, I was actually slightly insulted…he’s really protective of that stuff.”

Although it is not an Avengers film, the Multiverse’s inclusion in the title is proof that the Doctor Strange sequel will have major ramifications across the MCU. The Power of the Dog actor Kodi Smit-McPhee sat down with Variety to talk about an interesting encounter with Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch on set.

Variety first asked McPhee if he is involved in some form in the upcoming sequel, but the former X-Men actor dodged the question by telling a story centered around Cumberbatch instead.
McPhee shared an interesting conversation with Cumberbatch while filming The Power of the Dog, with him asking the MCU star if he is “in the contract moving forward.” However, the actor revealed that Cumberbatch “doesn’t let out a secret,” while also admitting that he was “slightly insulted” with the actor’s “protective” nature about the matter:
“Uh listen, I had this conversation with Benedict [laughs] on set [of The Power of the Dog]…when he was in full method acting as well, and I was like, ‘Listen, I know you’re the dude in the boots right now with the rope, but you need to tell me: am I in the contract moving forward?’ And that guy doesn’t let out a secret. Like, I was actually slightly insulted…he’s really protective of that stuff.”
McPhee previously portrayed Kurt Wagner a.k.a. Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and he had a brief cameo in Deadpool 2.

Miller first wrote The Afterparty as a movie script 12 years ago. As a Columbo fan long before, Miller said he intended Danners as his Columbo character. For example, Danners gets people to open up the way Peter Falk’s character would.
“I grew up loving Columbo and that character is inspired by Columbo in a way,” Miller said. “He was the character that was using people underestimating him to get them to slip up. That’s part of the idea of Danner is that she presents as this loosey goosey everybody’s best friend, she just wants to dish the dirt and people underestimate her and don’t realize that she actually knows exactly what’s going on and is really observant.”

I was still mourning HBO’s “Insecure,” which ended in December after five seasons, when I recently spoke with actor Jay Ellis about his social justice podcast.
Ellis played Lawrence, the flawed, immature-yet-evolving character on the hugely popular show about Black single life in Los Angeles. The show had become so much a part of my Sunday evening routine that the characters seemed liked old friends. I’ve also dated a few “Lawrences,” so there was a strange nostalgic feeling with each season.
But Ellis has said goodbye to his on-screen persona, so I had to do the same, at least for the interview. He’s now into the second season of his podcast, “The Untold Story: Criminal Injustice With Jay Ellis,” which takes a hard, thoughtful look at the nation’s criminal justice system.
The podcast, produced by Lemonada Media, is made possible thanks to The Just Trust, an organization that helps communities transform the criminal justice system, and Campaign Zero, which assists policymakers in finding solutions to police violence.
Ellis, 40, is the first to admit he’s no expert at unpacking social justice issues.
“The reality of some of this stuff is that it’s not very cut and dry. Some of it’s confusing, purposely confusing, and layered at that. But as we got into it, we just realized that this is a really great experience and an opportunity for folks to be able to go on this ride with me as I’m learning all about this,” he said.
In the podcast’s first season, which debuted in 2020, Ellis gave us a look into no-knock raids, like the one in which Breonna Taylor was killed in Kentucky in 2020. He talked with families who survived raids that resulted from mistaken identity. He also examined police union contracts, citing Austin, which had one of the country’s most problematic contracts. It limited civilian oversight, sealed important internal affairs files and allowed police misconduct files to disappear. A group of residents launched a campaign to demand changes in the contracts, and their efforts worked.
“The average citizen really doesn’t know that they actually can go to their city council members and be a part of that process of approving a police union contract and what’s in it, and what’s not it, and navigating on behalf of the community,” Ellis said. “We got to talk to so many brilliant folks — sheriffs, former police officers, city officials, academics and data scientists. It was absolutely amazing.”
The second season, which launched this month, examines the forensic science behind how people are incarcerated. Ellis visits the Houston Forensic Science Center and its CEO and president, Dr. Peter Stout. In 2003, Houston was known for having one of the nation’s worst crime labs, which was then a part of Houston Police Department. In 2012, former Mayor Annise Parker, with support from the City Council, created the center to provide independent forensic services to HPD.
There were 129 people in the U.S. exonerated for crimes that they didn’t commit in 2020, according to the National Registry of Exoneration, which has recorded more than 2,800 exonerations since 1989. The registry is a project operated in conjunction with the Center of Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University Law School.
“Now, people are getting a fair chance at forensics and at lab results because this is an independent lab,” Ellis said. “For however these tests come back, they (the lab staff) are strictly just doing their job. … It’s definitely a leader across the country and a game changer.”
There wasn’t one traumatic experience that led Ellis to want to do a podcast like this.
He was born in South Carolina and grew up with a father in the military, so Ellis went to 12 schools in 13 years. He spent high school in Tulsa, Okla. It’s where he had his first kiss, first time behind the wheel driving a car, first dance. It was also when he first experience blatant racism.
“That was where I started to realize that as a young Black man, I was being looked at quite differently by police than my white counterparts, who I went to school with,” he said.
“When you’re a kid, there’s so much that you don’t see because of youth, and then as you start to get a little bit older and you start to recognize some things. You start to see patterns, obviously you recognize that folks are oftentimes being targeted, and specifically folks of color. I think that, for me at such a young age, was the first time where I really started to realize like, ‘Oh, this world is built very different. And what can I do?’ I don’t want to just be helpless.”
I worry for my children, I told him. At only 4 and 6, they already have experienced the way kids act on the playground, and they have noticed how some children are treated better than others because of their skin color.
Ellis, who has a 2-year-old daughter with Serbian model Nina Senicar, said he understood. He was pulled over 10 times by police during his senior year in high school. His parents schooled him, like many Black parents do, on how to comply with police.
Turn the music down. Say, “Yes, sir.” Keep your hands on the wheel.
“I want folks to realize that they don’t have to be the expert,” he said. “Educate yourself and make sure you understand what is going on in your city and in your community. … You can’t take your foot off the gas. You have to constantly be pushing forward and demanding change and being active to get change.”
As we wrapped up talking about social justice, I could not end the conversation without asking about “Insecure.”
Do you miss it?
“I miss my girls,” Ellis said, referring to the female cast, which includes Issa Rae, the show’s creator, Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales and Christina Elmore. “It’s weird not to go to work and see people who you love every single day and not just the girls. That crew was absolutely amazing. There’s people who’ve been with us from day one in every single department. We all became a family.”
Ellis mentioned his friendship with Houston native Kendrick Sampson, who played Nathan on “Insecure.”
When it came to the playing the role of Lawrence, Ellis said it was a challenge because his personality is much different. While Lawrence let thoughts linger in his head rather than speak them, Ellis said he’s direct and motivated. “If I want it, I get up and go get it. I think Lawrence, on the other hand, was a little bit more into his feelings, much more of a thinker and second guessed himself a lot.”
So how about an “Insecure” movie?
“If y’all can get Issa to write a movie, I will be there,” Ellis said. “ It is going be a hard challenge. These characters lived a very rich life. … I don’t know how much more there is to discuss, especially this early with these characters, maybe 10-15 years from now.”
The beauty of “Insecure” is that it felt like family, even for me as I watched the show at home.
“It’s like a cookout, but there is no drunk uncle or auntie. There is not going to be a fight. It’s just going to be a goodbye. Everybody’s going to have a good time. And that’s what I miss,” Ellis said.
I miss that, too.

I was still mourning HBO’s “Insecure,” which ended in December after five seasons, when I recently spoke with actor Jay Ellis about his social justice podcast.
Ellis played Lawrence, the flawed, immature-yet-evolving character on the hugely popular show about Black single life in Los Angeles. The show had become so much a part of my Sunday evening routine that the characters seemed liked old friends. I’ve also dated a few “Lawrences,” so there was a strange nostalgic feeling with each season.
But Ellis has said goodbye to his on-screen persona, so I had to do the same, at least for the interview. He’s now into the second season of his podcast, “The Untold Story: Criminal Injustice With Jay Ellis,” which takes a hard, thoughtful look at the nation’s criminal justice system.
The podcast, produced by Lemonada Media, is made possible thanks to The Just Trust, an organization that helps communities transform the criminal justice system, and Campaign Zero, which assists policymakers in finding solutions to police violence.
Ellis, 40, is the first to admit he’s no expert at unpacking social justice issues.
“The reality of some of this stuff is that it’s not very cut and dry. Some of it’s confusing, purposely confusing, and layered at that. But as we got into it, we just realized that this is a really great experience and an opportunity for folks to be able to go on this ride with me as I’m learning all about this,” he said.
In the podcast’s first season, which debuted in 2020, Ellis gave us a look into no-knock raids, like the one in which Breonna Taylor was killed in Kentucky in 2020. He talked with families who survived raids that resulted from mistaken identity. He also examined police union contracts, citing Austin, which had one of the country’s most problematic contracts. It limited civilian oversight, sealed important internal affairs files and allowed police misconduct files to disappear. A group of residents launched a campaign to demand changes in the contracts, and their efforts worked.
“The average citizen really doesn’t know that they actually can go to their city council members and be a part of that process of approving a police union contract and what’s in it, and what’s not it, and navigating on behalf of the community,” Ellis said. “We got to talk to so many brilliant folks — sheriffs, former police officers, city officials, academics and data scientists. It was absolutely amazing.”
The second season, which launched this month, examines the forensic science behind how people are incarcerated. Ellis visits the Houston Forensic Science Center and its CEO and president, Dr. Peter Stout. In 2003, Houston was known for having one of the nation’s worst crime labs, which was then a part of Houston Police Department. In 2012, former Mayor Annise Parker, with support from the City Council, created the center to provide independent forensic services to HPD.
There were 129 people in the U.S. exonerated for crimes that they didn’t commit in 2020, according to the National Registry of Exoneration, which has recorded more than 2,800 exonerations since 1989. The registry is a project operated in conjunction with the Center of Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University Law School.
“Now, people are getting a fair chance at forensics and at lab results because this is an independent lab,” Ellis said. “For however these tests come back, they (the lab staff) are strictly just doing their job. … It’s definitely a leader across the country and a game changer.”
There wasn’t one traumatic experience that led Ellis to want to do a podcast like this.
He was born in South Carolina and grew up with a father in the military, so Ellis went to 12 schools in 13 years. He spent high school in Tulsa, Okla. It’s where he had his first kiss, first time behind the wheel driving a car, first dance. It was also when he first experience blatant racism.
“That was where I started to realize that as a young Black man, I was being looked at quite differently by police than my white counterparts, who I went to school with,” he said.
“When you’re a kid, there’s so much that you don’t see because of youth, and then as you start to get a little bit older and you start to recognize some things. You start to see patterns, obviously you recognize that folks are oftentimes being targeted, and specifically folks of color. I think that, for me at such a young age, was the first time where I really started to realize like, ‘Oh, this world is built very different. And what can I do?’ I don’t want to just be helpless.”
I worry for my children, I told him. At only 4 and 6, they already have experienced the way kids act on the playground, and they have noticed how some children are treated better than others because of their skin color.
Ellis, who has a 2-year-old daughter with Serbian model Nina Senicar, said he understood. He was pulled over 10 times by police during his senior year in high school. His parents schooled him, like many Black parents do, on how to comply with police.
Turn the music down. Say, “Yes, sir.” Keep your hands on the wheel.
“I want folks to realize that they don’t have to be the expert,” he said. “Educate yourself and make sure you understand what is going on in your city and in your community. … You can’t take your foot off the gas. You have to constantly be pushing forward and demanding change and being active to get change.”
As we wrapped up talking about social justice, I could not end the conversation without asking about “Insecure.”
Do you miss it?
“I miss my girls,” Ellis said, referring to the female cast, which includes Issa Rae, the show’s creator, Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales and Christina Elmore. “It’s weird not to go to work and see people who you love every single day and not just the girls. That crew was absolutely amazing. There’s people who’ve been with us from day one in every single department. We all became a family.”
Ellis mentioned his friendship with Houston native Kendrick Sampson, who played Nathan on “Insecure.”
When it came to the playing the role of Lawrence, Ellis said it was a challenge because his personality is much different. While Lawrence let thoughts linger in his head rather than speak them, Ellis said he’s direct and motivated. “If I want it, I get up and go get it. I think Lawrence, on the other hand, was a little bit more into his feelings, much more of a thinker and second guessed himself a lot.”
So how about an “Insecure” movie?
“If y’all can get Issa to write a movie, I will be there,” Ellis said. “ It is going be a hard challenge. These characters lived a very rich life. … I don’t know how much more there is to discuss, especially this early with these characters, maybe 10-15 years from now.”
The beauty of “Insecure” is that it felt like family, even for me as I watched the show at home.
“It’s like a cookout, but there is no drunk uncle or auntie. There is not going to be a fight. It’s just going to be a goodbye. Everybody’s going to have a good time. And that’s what I miss,” Ellis said.
I miss that, too.

More than seven years after the film’s premiere, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron opened up about her experience during production—specifically, her highly publicized feud with co-star Tom Hardy. The 46-year-old actress was among those quoted in Kyle Buchanan’s new book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, which explores the two-decade making of the Oscar-winning film.
According to excerpts published by Vanity Fair, the beef between 44-year-old Hardy and Theron came to a “turning point” when the former appeared on set three hours late.
“I remember vividly the day. The call on set was eight o’clock,” camera operator Mark Goellnich recalled. “Charlize got there right at eight o’clock, sat in the War Rig, knowing that Tom’s never going to be there at eight even though they made a special request for him to be there on time. He was notorious for never being on time in the morning. If the call time was in the morning, forget it—he didn’t show up.”
Goellnich said the Oscar-winning actress remained in the War Rig for the next several hours, and didn’t move until Hardy showed up.
“She jumps out of the War Rig, and she starts swearing her head off at him, saying, ‘Fine the fucking c**t a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew,’ and ‘How disrespectful you are!’” Goellnicht said. “She was right. Full rant. She screams it out. It’s so loud, it’s so windy — he might’ve heard some of it, but he charged up to her and went, ‘What did you say to me?’”
He went on to say that Theron felt so threatened that she requested a producer be with her at all times for “protection.” The actress corroborated Goellnicht’s account.
“It got to a place where it was kind of out of hand, and there was a sense that maybe sending a woman producer down could maybe equalize some of it, because I didn’t feel safe,” she said. “… I don’t want to make excuses for bad behavior, but it was a tough shoot. Now, I have a very clear perspective on what went down. I don’t think I had that clarity when we were making the movie. I was in survival mode; I was really scared shitless.”
Theron went on to accuse Fury Road producer Doug Mitchell of excusing Hardy’s actions, saying it was an instance of “a man forgiving another man for really bad behavior, and I didn’t feel safe.”
Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult compared the on-set tensions to being on a vacation while the “adults in the front of the car are arguing.” Theron agreed.
“He’s right, it was like two parents in the front of the car,” she said. “We were either fighting or we were icing each other—I don’t know which one is worse—and they had to deal with it in the back. It was horrible! We should not have done that; we should have been better. I can own up to that.”
Hardy seemed unconvinced that Theron was actually scared of him, but admitted he didn’t have enough “experience” at the time to properly handle the role.
“Charlize is an intense woman. Very intense, actually. In a good way. I mean, look at her in Monster — that’s not somebody walking in the park,” he said. “You don’t just summon up that kind of authenticity without bringing a tremendous wealth of artistic ability,” he went on. “She’s a very serious actor. So, I don’t see why she would ever be intimidated by me or in any way feel frightened. I think that was more bollocks.”
Blood, Sweat and Chrome is available now. The book includes more than 150 interviews with people who were involved in the film, including director George Miller.

A billboard was erected on both the north and southbound sides of Route 95 near the city reading “@TaylorSwift13. Dunk, Saturday, You in?”
And many students, along with the social media accounts of the college and the 12,400-seat arena affectionately known as “The Dunk,” have taken to Twitter to lure the “Shake It Off” singer to the Big East matchup.
It’s unclear if Swift, 32, who has a house in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, can even hit a layup or knows the first thing about hoops, but she is something of a totem for the 11th ranked Friars.
As the team — led by veteran players and Coach Ed Cooley, who is so awesome that when he split his pants during the 2018 Big East tournament final he tucked a Gatorade towel in his trousers and kept coaching — have battled their way to a 23-3 record, Swift’s music has put some extra wind in their sails.
