Narrative games, we like it or we don’t like it. Besides, games that are more about story and narrative than gameplay always tend to divide players. We can, for example, talk about the very recent and very good A Plague Tale: Requiem which is shunned by many players because “the gameplay is old and lame”. So, yes, it doesn’t have the best gameplay of the decade, but that’s not what makes the strength of this game. Suddenly, South of the Circle is a title that may be totally soporific for some for others, it may be excellent to live with, like a good book to read by the fireside.

South of the Circle puts us in the shoes of Peter, a Cambridge scholar who crashes in Antarctica during the Cold War. As he seeks help, his past unfolds before him, revealing how the pressures of power and his own aspirations have led him to this crisis from which he must recover. A love affair between him and his colleague Clara begins, and Peter learns the weight of all the things he promised. The story is very well written and over time, the puzzle unfolds until a very strong finale. But I will come back to this final.

The gameplay of South of the Circle is limited to walking in the snow or moving forward with a means of transport. Between two trips, we will have a memory that will be told through Peter’s eyes. During these moments, dialogue choices will have to be made. But unlike other games in the genre, there’s no written dialogue to tell us what to say. There is no pause when a character speaks to give us time to choose our dialogue. Instead, there are icons that appear that will define a type of response: there is a blue square, a small drop, a sun and a red dot. The blue square is a logical response while the sun is a playful response. This system has a limit in the sense that it takes some time to understand “which icon means what” and moreover, sometimes it does not really correspond to what we thought. This gives a sometimes random side, we have less the impression of managing our answers than in other games of the same genre.

But suddenly, is this a problem for the different possible endings? Well, no, because in fact all these choices are rather there to try to make us understand the feelings of Peter during the strong moments of his life. The game will always end the same way, with only two very light variants, but I can’t say more so as not to spoil you. What is certain is that the end makes us aware of many things that we thought we had seen in a certain way when it was not the truth. Sometimes memory tells us things as it suits us… In short, I loved this story. It’s well written, the mix between the moments of the present with Peter trying to survive in Antarctica and those of the past where he remembers his job or his romantic moments, is perfectly balanced. Very good job!
Don’t miss this train
To top it all off, South of the Circle’s soundtrack is top notch. The music is superb, it perfectly accompanies what is happening on the screen. The sound effects are discreet but realistic. The strong point is the English dubbing. I assure you, the game is subtitled in French. But the quality of the dubbing is excellent. A big hats off to the voice actors of Peter and Clara who did a remarkable job. We believe it. Also, the art direction of the game is superb. It looks nice. Sometimes you feel like you’re looking at a painting, it’s really well done. The textures are simple but the environments are really well done and especially the work on the animations is really very good. There are a few small collision bugs at times, but nothing too shocking. Finally, in terms of lifespan, it will take between 3 and 4 hours of play to see the end of this story.
A new DLC for Forza Horizon 5?
South of the Circle is a nice surprise for me. A really successful narrative game that should delight fans of the genre. Afterwards, if your delirium is the gameplay, I can’t do anything for you, because you’re not going to enjoy walking or choosing an icon to dialogue…

Energy is our future, let’s save there but from there to save creativity… So we recently had to deal with a Karcher simulation, many kitchen simulations, train/bus/car driver simulations. truck, farm simulations, PC assembly, but there is a world that had remained untouched by any simulation. A world where space, time, respect for others, good manners and good taste disappear: THE SERVICE STATION.
Full of Super
Our avatar, surely at the end of a roll of toilet paper, gets into the idea of taking over an old disused service station on route 66. This is obviously more dreamy than Roubaix and the Lille ring road. Before the opening and start getting pumped, you have to clear the area and make the place passable for your customers. And hop ! A ride in a tractor: Simone, you’re driving, I’m honking! Install your shelves, order the products, and seeing your first tank of gasoline filling your tank is heartwarming!
Looks like Riggs after a drunken night out
Once the opening is done, you will have to manage a multitude of things like in real life outside. These tasks to be carried out are often the means of delivering to us very moldy mini games which will act as a cache of misery and put a hint of fun in our chores. There is the scanning of shop items with the cleaning of the conveyor belt. There is also the full filling of customers, because on road 66, they are still being served, it is thanks to that that we can have all the recurring clichés in Slasher Movies such as Urban Legend or the Massacre at the chain saw. You can also repaint the front, I’ve never seen a paint that degrades so quickly, the tiger at Esso should call his panther friend from Duluxe Valentine to shout at the scam. We will not miss the cleaning of the floors of the shops and the toilets, with a broom, I assure you. Finally, we can do mechanics with the tire change, take out the garbage cans and order the emptying of the dumpsters, hire an employee…
As the article does not pass… is it free?
So finally, a good representation of what a service station employee is, a real Swiss army knife in the world of work. But apart from that, the game remains more than average or even frankly disappointing. The sets without being a panacea are just acceptable, the modeling of the characters is worthy of a PS2 or at best an Xbox 360.

Full pitfalls or omissions are really problematic if we want to call it a simulation: you deliver gasoline but no notion of the differences between Diesel and Gasoline, no management of conflicts with customers, your motorized customers are limited to cars or passengers on a bus (no motorbikes or jerry cans for a person who has broken down), supply has no management of the bottom of the tank which can cause damage to our customer’s vehicle, no management of the crowd, rudeness, robbery if you leave your warehouse open, broken items, clogged toilets, people leaving without paying or payment being refused… is to manage a service station. It’s a station in the land of Care Bears, Gas Station Simulator is a simulation game but not a simulation strictly speaking.
Scary modeling
A game that could have made us the Total but which for lack of means, ambition, knowledge of the environment, turns out to be hollow, tasteless and never puts us in a difficult situation as a Two Point Hospital or Theme can do. Park. A discovery of the environment which could have allowed some to have a certain openness to what this difficult place is where the lubricant should not only be available for motorized vehicles but also to pass difficult tests to those who work there.

While the golden age of narrative games in the episodic format largely represented by the late Telltales had disappeared from our game consoles, Gearbox is back eight years after the title Tales From The Borderlands (then developed by Telltales). With just the addition of the word “New” to the title of this newcomer, can we really expect a different gaming experience? Nothing is less sure.
From zeros to heroes, there is only one step
The story of New Tales From The Borderlands takes place after the events of Borderlands 3, and by extension those of the Telltales episode. Don’t worry if it’s the first time you’ve ventured into the universe, apart from knowing the background of certain characters, it doesn’t harm the narrative.
We play three characters in turn: Dr. Anuradha Dhar, a scientist at Atlas, Octavio Wallace-Dhar, his brother who stayed on the planet Prometheus who dreams only of fame and Fran, owner of a yogurt ice cream bar in which also works Octavio. These three characters, with rather unflattering profiles, will find themselves in spite of themselves at the center of yet another hostile takeover between the arms manufacturers of the galaxy, resulting in the invasion of the planet by the forces of Tediore. Our zeros will then chain the adventures until saving Prometheus and becoming heroes. Obviously, to preserve all the flavor of the scenario, we will not go into details.
Just like Telltales games in the past, the title is divided into several chapters (five here) for an overall lifespan of around ten hours. On the other hand, everything is included directly, no need to wait several weeks/months between each episode as was the case before.
On the narration side, we also keep the old formula here with a system of multiple-choice dialogues in a limited period of time. If these choices have consequences, these very rarely have a direct impact on the course of the scenario. They mainly influence the level of relationship between our characters and really take on importance at the very end of the game. It’s a shame, and it gives us a little too often the impression of being just a stupid spectator. no real decision-making power. We also regret that a majority of the choices are quite nebulous on the effects they could have, thus reinforcing the impression of performing random actions.
Fortunately, the scenario can be followed with pleasure. The three main characters are endearing, each with strong, well-written personalities. It’s a little more uneven for the secondary characters, even if some like LOU13 or Brock made us laugh several times. The humor specific to the Borderlands license is there, and fans of the genre are once again well served. Funny situations, absurd encounters and numerous references to Pop Culture, New Tales From The Borderlands delighted us.
A gameplay remained lost in 2014
Unfortunately, the narration is not everything and a terrible observation strikes us from the first hours of play: the gameplay is absent subscribers. It’s very simple, everything has remained as in the Telltales games, namely a succession of sometimes long dialogues waking us up at times with QTEs to be executed under penalty of a Game Over. There are also some point & click sequences where you can explore a small area and interact with the characters and key elements of the decor. It is also possible to take the opportunity to collect a few wads of cash to buy new skins.
In summary, nothing new, and if the formula worked in 2014 or even 2015, it was the overuse of the latter that led players to overdose and then to the death of Telltales. With this new game, we would have liked to find something really new to eat.
If the Archiibos fights make us smile at the beginning of the adventure (mainly thanks to their staging in the narration), these clashes of small figurines quickly turn out to be very uninteresting. They just ask us to strafe the A button to hit the opponent, then include the directional stick in two or three directions to dodge and fight back. We also cannot count on the few hacking mini-games to save the gameplay of the title, the latter also requiring a simple press of the A key.
Handsome like Jack
Technically, New Tales From The Borderlands remains faithful to the series by offering quality cell-shading. The facial expressions are rather successful as well as the different sets. Some animations in the movements however left us skeptical. But fans of the license will still be won over, the Borderlands universe is well portrayed.
Good point for the game, the loadings are very fast and thus avoid long downtimes. Unfortunately, in return, the game shows some delays in the display of certain sequences, leaving us then faced with a mush of pixels for a second or two. We would also have appreciated a feature to speed up or even skip the dialogues, especially in the event of a second run with the objective of another ending.
Finally, we would like to salute the quality of the VF offered by the title. It contributes in particular to the attachment that we can have for our three heroes. To the latter, is added a pleasant soundtrack without being memorable.

The transalpine studio invites us to a rich and captivating incursion into a fantastic world, “The Darkest Tales”. Teddy, a little teddy bear almost forgotten in his toy box, is revived and his mission is simple: save Alicia, his mistress, locked in a kingdom of fables and transfigured tales. Also, nightmares and macabre worlds await you in a beautiful adventure full of characters, let’s say very familiar!
Indeed, this little teddy bear will make us meet creatures close to the Disney universe and the tales of Perrault, which have enlivened the reading of our childhood and our entertainment in our games during our adolescence… for some at least! Who will not see through this adventure that of Mickey ready to face Mizrabel and deliver Minnie from the caves of the castle of illusions?
Admittedly, the effect is striking and terribly intoxicating as this “Castle of illusion” brings back memories of dreams, which have now disappeared. Perhaps Trinity Team wanted us to relive these chimeras and this delicious universe in the heads of some forty-somethings.
A kingdom both childish and sordid
How not to resist this visual rendering so charming, so poetic and yet so bloody. Once out of our toy box, our bear, guided by a consciousness of light, will cross marvelous worlds that can only move us as the graphic work brought has been neat. The passion is really felt here and, while advancing, we find ourselves stopping to contemplate the environment so well worked. Rather rare!
The light effects, the variety of landscapes, here everything is magical. This feeling creates a very special immersion that brings back our good memories of games. This feeling is so sweet that the game does not take long to take us with it. A beautiful immersion, therefore, which surprises as it is secretly hoped for by all.
There is also contrast, interesting too, between a lyrical aspect, as mentioned, and macabre tasks here and there to show that the adventure will be eminently perilous. Thus, we find well-known characters, well-identified toys (LEGO in others) which mix to give a singular atmosphere.
The other contrast relates more to the characters that one plays directly or indirectly. Indeed, this teddy bear and fairy duo is quite fun and endearing. The always positive fairy is the real engine of the game and spends her time persuading a rather gruff and grumpy bear cub.
Good ideas taken up
Behind this splendid picture, there are also good ideas. As with characters and environments, these ideas remind us of others. First, the skills of our character. As the quest progresses, our cub will be able to rush, double-jump, fly. These provisions will be able to develop with an interesting arsenal of improvements.
Indeed, these improvements are grouped in a tree that will easily recall that of Ori, another heavyweight of poetic platform games. The Darkest Tales is not a linear game. The progression in the adventure is not so simple. From the first worlds, we will note levels that will not be fully accessible. Gaining weapons or objects in the following levels will allow access to these previously unaffordable areas. To understand this game, you will have to explore and go back. This tortuous path will extend the life of the title. For example, when we can fly, we will access bonuses increasing the power of our cub. In addition, the grappling hook will offer the possibility of crossing a precipice that was believed to be impassable.
In short, although often used, this extension is quite interesting. Especially since the fights are generally enjoyable. The bosses are big, charismatic and pretty well animated overall. The enemies are numerous enough to avoid the repetition which is boring and which alters the desire to play again. Moreover, the difficulty is well gauged, going from a very accessible “easy” mode to a “difficult” one that will unravel you and your teddy bear! Replayability has therefore not been forgotten.

So what could we blame Trinity Teams with this game evoking such beautiful nostalgia? The playability? Not really, it’s good and never hurts despite a large number of buttons to remember. Perhaps, the ability to change the action buttons on the controller is missing. The plot, then? Wrong way. You make the fable by advancing in the adventure. Honestly, the scenario is well “tied up” and the characters are sufficiently present (image and sound) to bring this tale to life.
Perhaps the music is the most fragile element here. Too discreet perhaps, especially in certain phases of action. Less inspiration too. The authors may have gotten lost in these bewitching worlds that are so seductive. Too bad they weren’t more inspired by the ambient spell during the design… Yes, there is undoubtedly a lack at this level. Yet there were all the ingredients required to live a great sound experience by advancing our cute and endearing Teddy.
A very good game that just fails to be an event
Nope, The Darkest Tales will not dethrone Ori; it won’t be him. There was, however, a powerful graphic nostalgic aspect and very good ideas to make this game the adventure of this end of the year or even a little more. Nice, but technically flawed
The good point of this case is the undeniable pleasure felt during these games. This link with Jason Reitman’s film, a tribute to his father – who will have had time to appreciate the result before dying last February -, Spirits Unleashed maintains it throughout its introductory scene. We discover, amused, that the business has found some color, finally, after a long slump which will have earned the mythical quartet the misadventures that we know. Nice, but technically flawed
The good point of this case is the undeniable pleasure felt during these games. Do you like realistic multiplayer FPS warfare? Do you like everything related to the First World War? You don’t care if a game is rather naughty and above all boring to play? When we tackle the multi FPS with historical sauce, we know that we are walking in the footsteps of Call of Duty and Battlefield, which have both already offered episodes on the First or Second World War. Inevitably, when a small studio tackles a game of its kind, you have to have a hell of a pair! In 2017, we had Verdun, which tried to put us in the harsh trench warfare of the First World War. I had tested it in 2017 and I had found it really rotten. An ugly title, rough, not fun, with technical problems in spades. A pleasure to play. In 2020, we had Tannenberg which is Verdun only better. Except that we were talking about one of the worst games tested on our site. Suddenly, Tannenberg had done better than Verdun, it was still a very bad game. I don’t have much hope for Isonzo but well… why not.
It’s less ugly than Verdun
Isonzo focuses on the battles between the Italians and the Austro-Hungarian army. The story of the game presents us with historical battles that took place over a period of two years. We will participate in historic offensives, from the sixth battle of Isonzo to the Strafexpedition, reproducing the true course of the clashes. As each map loads, you get an actual image and detailed description of the battle that really took place there. Then it’s up to us to wage our war on the battlefield. At the start of the game, you must choose the Italian army or the Austro-Hungarian army. Each side will be placed on the offensive or defensive side of the battle. Honestly, the gaming experience is different if you play alone or in a team with real friends. In this configuration, we can at least have fun enjoying rather large maps and a fairly realistic experience. But otherwise…it’s on the same level as Tannenberg. It’s pretty much the same: big map, World War I, a lot of AI to fill deserted servers, and a realization that doesn’t fly high. As I said at the time of Tannenberg: you really, but then really have to be a “fan” of this period of war, to appreciate the “realism” of the game, well I imagine, I never actually go to war. The game isn’t very pretty to look at, it’s a bit prettier than Tannenberg with slightly more detailed textures but it’s still very passable. The soundtrack is limited to footsteps, soldiers yelling in a ridiculous way and weapons that “click click pan pan”.

Isonzo is superior to Tannenberg who was superior to Verdun. If you liked these last two titles you will be in heaven. Otherwise, well go your way, there is nothing to see.
