Echo Park — A retrospective exhibition featuring the work of Chicana artist and Echo Park resident Margaret Garcia will open next month at the Museum of Ventura County.
Arte Para la Gente: The Collected Works of Margaret Garcia will start a six-month run on November 11, featuring 70 pieces of art, including oil paintings, pastels, a fused glass piece and a 3-D sculptural piece done jointly by Garcia and artist/blacksmith Heather McClarty.
The exhibition is the first solo museum show for Garcia, who calls herself one of the “lucky ones” being able to live so long to see a cohesive display of her work through the decades.
“Few artists get to see their work on a museum wall,” says Garcia, 70. “It’s really nice to be able to present a body of work that has continuity, that pulls some of the best pieces together from the past.”

Garcia’s Highland Park studio overflows with canvases of all sizes that depict evocative portraits, vignettes of firefighters in dramatic blazes, quiet neighborhood scenes and still life studies; many are infused with Garcia’s intense color style.
Pandemic isolation pays off
Planning for the exhibition started about 18 months before the 2020 lock-down, which provided her an unexpected benefit. She had wanted a comprehensive catalogue of her work and the isolation of the last year gave her that opportunity to write unapologetically about her work.
“It’s me in my own words,” she says. “I know a lot of artists who say, ‘Well, my work is on the wall and it speaks for itself.’ But I have the ability to articulate what I want to say. These are my words at 70-years-old about how I see my art.”
Raised in Boyle Heights, Garcia started at age 10 painting portraits of family members and her neighbors. Growing up she was exposed to many different communities in her immediate neighborhood. “It was Japanese, African American, Russian, Jewish; not just Latinos,” she says. This multicultural immersion formed her inclusive artistic attention on humanity’s common ground connections.

Over the years, Garcia, who persued graduate studies at USC, has done restoration work, curated local Day of the Dead exhibits, taught art to the incarcerated, and honed her creativity as painter, muralist and glass artist. She created the mural The Tree of Califas for the subway stop at Universal City, and her artwork can be found in permanent collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Laguna Art Museum among others.
Garcia still ventures deeper into her art; today she continues to create and learns from tutoring others.
More museum recognition
On the day after her Ventura exhibition closes in May of next year, Cheech Marin’s Chicano art and culture center in Riverside will open and feature the work of preeminent artists like Patssi Valdez, Carlos Almaraz, Frank Romero – and Garcia.
Garcia reveals she just had cataract surgery which has given her “new eyes” and an added depth of appreciation when looking through her retrospective work.
“It’s really nice to be where I am right now,” she says. “I am at a place of gratitude. I don’t feel old. I feel young at heart and capable. I’m not bedridden or sick. I’m healthy and strong. I have more time in me and the ability to be productive. Yes, I have more things I want to say!”

The film is a gothic fairy tale about Veronica Ghent who after a double mastectomy, goes to a healing retreat in rural Scotland with her young nurse Desi. There, she discovers that the process of such surgery opens up questions about her very existence, leading her to start to question and confront past traumas. The two develop an unlikely bond as mysterious forces give Veronica the power to enact revenge within her dreams.
“She Will” has been a hit on the festival circuit. It won the Golden Leopard for Best First Film at Locarno Film Festival and was in the official selection at the London Film Festival, Sitges, Fantastic Fest and Thessaloniki.
“She Will” stars Alice Krige (“Sleepwalkers”), Kota Eberhardt (“Dark Phoenix”), Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”), Amy Manson (“Spencer”), Jonathan Aris (“The Death of Stalin”) and Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”). The film was produced by Jessica Malik and Bob Last and written by Kitty Percy and Colbert. Ed Pressman, Dario Argento, Sam Pressman, Ed Clarke, Sam Cryer, Hannah Leader, Thorsten Schumacher and Sara Woodhatch were executive producers.

An attorney who filed dozens of BitTorrent copyright cases on behalf of Voltage Pictures and Millennium Films has renounced the practice, saying he was duped into participating in unethical copyright “trolling.”
James S. Davis filed suit against his former legal partner and his former clients in San Diego Superior Court in July. In the complaint, he says that he was recruited into the BitTorrent litigation by a former law school classmate, Carl Crowell, who told him he had a “good litigation business opportunity.”
Crowell, based in Salem, Ore., has filed hundreds of copyright infringement lawsuits against users of torrent sites. Crowell typically files against “John Doe” defendants who are identified solely by their IP address. He then obtains a court order forcing the internet service provider to identify the subscriber. He then demands a settlement — usually about $7,500. Though some defendants allege that someone else was using their IP address, it is often cheaper to settle than to fight the claims in court.
Davis was practicing immigration law in San Diego when Crowell asked him to help with the copyright cases in March 2015, according to the suit. Soon, Davis began filing federal suits for illegal downloads of “Dallas Buyers Club” and “The Cobbler,” both produced by Voltage Pictures, among other films.
In one of those cases in San Francisco, the defense attorney, Nicholas Ranallo, filed a motion asking the plaintiffs to post a $50,000 bond. In the motion, Ranallo blasted Davis for “copyright trolling,” and raised questions about whether Davis’ client — Dallas Buyers Club LLC — actually owned the copyright to the film. Ranallo also claimed it was impossible to know whether his client, Ryan Underwood, was actually responsible for the illegal downloads.
“The plaintiffs’ goal in these matters is not to reach a judgment on the merits, but rather to secure a dubious settlement with onerous terms that accrue primarily to the benefit of attorneys and other non-parties,” Ranallo alleged. Ranallo also cited litigation filed against Voltage by Dallas Buyers Club LLC, in which the latter stated that it had no knowledge or control over the copyright litigation being carried out in its name.
In response, Davis argued that the copyright owners were engaged in a sincere effort to combat piracy, and would only target “the worst of the worst” violators. Davis alleged that Underwood’s IP address was used to distribute “Dallas Buyers Club” over 400 times, along with 2,000 other titles.
Davis prevailed on the motion, and the case was later dismissed by mutual agreement of the parties. But in his recent lawsuit, Davis now says that in the course of preparing his response, he began asking questions and uncovering facts that undermined “his belief in the value and ethical propriety” of the copyright suits.
In a separate copyright case in San Diego, Davis says he uncovered additional troubling facts in the course of drafting a response to a judge’s threat to dismiss the case. He says he had a meeting in Santa Monica with the key figures on the plaintiff’s side, after which he “concluded that both the legal and factual basis of the Copyright Litigation campaign were unsound, and that each had been misrepresented to him.”
At that point, Davis had filed 58 copyright cases for downloads of two Voltage films (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “The Cobbler”), three Millennium films (“London Has Fallen,” “Criminal,” “Septembers of Shiraz”) and two Benaroya Pictures films (“Queen of the Desert,” “Cell”). He dismissed the cases or turned them over to other counsel and withdrew from the copyright enforcement campaign.
He then retained Ranallo — who had blasted his San Francisco case — to sue Crowell, as well as Millennium, Voltage and other entities. In the suit, Davis seeks at least $300,000 to compensate him for hours spent working on cases that were “legally and factually infirm.”
Crowell declined to comment.

So, to thank fans worldwide for their passion for two of Universal Pictures’ most beloved franchises, Universal and Amblin Entertainment announced today that beginning June 25, every IMAX® screening of F9 will feature a Special Extended Preview of Jurassic World: Dominion, co-written and directed by returning filmmaker Colin Trevorrow, who also executive produced the film with franchise creator Steven Spielberg.
Jurassic World: Dominion, produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Academy Award® winner Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum and features an impressive international cast, including Mamoudou Athie, Scott Haze, Dichen Lachman, Daniella Pineda, Campbell Scott, Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, Omar Sy, DeWanda Wise and BD Wong. Trevorrow wrote the screenplay with Emily Carmichael from a story by Derek Connolly and Trevorrow. Alexandra Derbyshire executive produced alongside Trevorrow and Spielberg.
Trevorrow directed 2015’s Jurassic World, which went on to gross $1.67 billion worldwide and is the sixth-highest-grossing film in cinema history. The Jurassic franchise, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018, has grossed more than $5 billion at the worldwide box office.

The five-minute Special Extended Preview of Jurassic World: Dominion, which audiences will be able to experience in full-screen 1:90:1 IMAX® aspect ratio, includes a prologue to the film’s narrative and is set 65 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs roamed the entire Earth. The breathtaking, action-packed scenes, featuring Oscar® winner Michael Giacchino’s iconic score, reveal what Earth looked like long before humans existed and tell the origin story of how dinosaur DNA first came to be carried by a mythic mosquito. The Preview features seven new species of dinosaurs, created by the legendary Industrial Light & Magic, that have never been seen in any Jurassic film before. But the Preview doesn’t end there and holds some real trademark Jurassic surprises with dinosaurs later roaming an Earth that is decidedly less theirs alone.
