A selection of prominent Utah writers from the Utah@125 project—a collection of 125-word essays and poems to celebrate Utah—will present eight simultaneous readings (plus a ninth virtual reading) at independent book stores around the state on Saturday, April 30, 2022 (Independent Bookstore Day, duh). The event is (we think) the first-ever simultaneous series of readings at multiple bookstores across the state. Among the readers will be former Utah poet laureates, national award-winning slam poets, prominent Utah journalists (including Salt Lake magazine’s editor Jeremy Pugh), award-winning fiction writers, poets, and essayists.

More than 45 writers, five or more in each location, will read their 125-word pieces at seven Utah bookstores at 3 p.m. The readings will take place on Saturday, April 30 in Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Sandy, and Provo bookstores. Plus: There will be a virtual Zoom reading (link here) at 3 p.m. hosted by Torrey House Press, and an additional Salt Lake City reading at 5 p.m. at Weller Book Works.

“The cool thing about these readings is the idea of Utah stories being told by writers across the state—at the same time,” said Anne Holman, co-owner of The King’s English Bookshop, who partnered with the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement to schedule the events. “I can’t think of a better way to represent the diversity of Utah’s literary voices, as well as the strength of our bookstores.”

All of the Utah@125 readings—commissioned as part of the state’s Thrive125 celebration—are free.

El lunes (18 de abril), Pusha T finalmente consolidó una fecha de lanzamiento para su próximo álbum It’s Almost Dry, producido en su totalidad por Kanye West y Pharrell Williams, uno de los proyectos de rap más esperados de 2022. Kid Cudi, de quien se rumoreaba que aparecerá junto a Kanye West en una canción destinada al álbum, reveló en Twitter el martes (19 de abril) para aclarar que él y Ye todavía estaban en buenos términos y que la canción, que se reveló como “Rock N Roll,” sería la última que los dos harían juntos.

Sleep plays an important role in enabling cognitive function and maintaining good psychological health. It also helps keep the brain healthy by removing waste products. As we get older, we often see alterations in our sleep patterns, including difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, and decreased quantity and quality of sleep. It is thought that these sleep disturbances may contribute to cognitive decline and psychiatric disorders in the aging population.

In research published today in Nature Aging, scientists from the UK and China examined data from nearly 500,000 adults aged 38-73 years from the UK Biobank. Participants were asked about their sleeping patterns, mental health and wellbeing, and took part in a series of cognitive tests. Brain imaging and genetic data were available for almost 40,000 of the study participants.

By analysing these data, the team found that both insufficient and excessive sleep duration were associated with impaired cognitive performance, such as processing speed, visual attention, memory and problem-solving skills. Seven hours of sleep per night was the optimal amount of sleep for cognitive performance, but also for good mental health, with people experiencing more symptoms of anxiety and depression and worse overall wellbeing if they reported sleeping for longer or shorter durations.

The researchers say one possible reason for the association between insufficient sleep and cognitive decline may be due to the disruption of slow-wave — ‘deep’ — sleep. Disruption to this type of sleep has been shown to have a close link with memory consolidation as well as the build-up of amyloid — a key protein which, when it misfolds, can cause ‘tangles’ in the brain characteristic of some forms of dementia. Additionally, lack of sleep may hamper the brain’s ability to rid itself of toxins.

The team also found a link between the amount of sleep and differences in the structure of brain regions involved in cognitive processing and memory, again with greater changes associated with greater than or less than seven hours of sleep.

Having a consistent seven hours’ sleep each night, without too much fluctuation in duration, was also important to cognitive performance and good mental health and wellbeing. Previous studies have also shown that interrupted sleep patterns are associated with increased inflammation, indicating a susceptibility to age-related diseases in older people.

Professor Jianfeng Feng from Fudan University in China said: “While we can’t say conclusively that too little or too much sleep causes cognitive problems, our analysis looking at individuals over a longer period of time appears to support this idea. But the reasons why older people have poorer sleep appear to be complex, influenced by a combination of our genetic makeup and the structure of our brains.”

The researchers say the findings suggest that insufficient or excessive sleep duration may be a risk factor for cognitive decline in ageing. This is supported by previous studies that have reported a link between sleep duration and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, in which cognitive decline is a hallmark symptom.

Professor Barbara Sahakian from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, one of the study’s authors, said: “Getting a good night’s sleep is important at all stages of life, but particularly as we age. Finding ways to improve sleep for older people could be crucial to helping them maintain good mental health and wellbeing and avoiding cognitive decline, particularly for patients with psychiatric disorders and dementias.”

The research was supported by the National Key R&D Program of China, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Major Project, the Shanghai Center for Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Technology, the 111 Project, the National Natural Sciences Foundation of China and the Shanghai Rising Star Program.

Je ne sais pas pour vous, mais moi depuis très jeune, j’avais envie de me sentir ‘utile’. Je vois bien autour de moi que l’on est nombreux à envier les projets, le mode de vie, ou les carrières des autres, celles de certains proches, celles vues au détour d’un post insta, ou encore celles de personnes inspirantes dont certains magazines parlent. On se dit qu’eux font des choses qui ont vraiment de l’impact. A la fois c’est inspirant et à la fois cela nous renvoie à notre “petite vie” comparée à la leur.

Et ce qui est fou, c’est que l’on passe beaucoup de temps à envier la vie des autres, alors que ces mêmes vies (avec leurs avantages mais AUSSI leurs inconvénients) NE NOUS conviendraient PAS. En réalité, nous sommes dans cette frustration parce que nous sommes TRÈS nombreux à ne pas être conscient de notre propre valeur à nous. Notamment parce que la société aujourd’hui accorde beaucoup de valeur et de reconnaissance à un nombre très restreint de “types de projets”, alors qu’il existe 1001 façons d’avoir UNE ÉNORME VALEUR, et d’être très utile dans ce monde.

Je me souviens d’une amie qui depuis des années était frustrée de ne pas avoir un job “plus gratifiant », elle aurait aimé “briller” un peu plus dans sa carrière. Et après discussion, j’ai compris que cette amie-là, ce qu’elle aimait – et qui était sa plus grande valeur ajoutée – c’était d’organiser des supers activités pour ses enfants, sa famille au sens large et de contribuer à créer une belle fraternité au sein de celle-ci. Ces projets-là étaient un VRAI KIFF pour elle (et un vrai cadeau pour ses enfants et son entourage). Sauf qu’elle continuait de chercher ailleurs la valeur ajoutée qu’elle pourrait avoir dans ce monde, car aux yeux de la société (et donc à ses yeux) “cela n’avait pas assez de valeur”. Alors qu’évidemment que OUI, on peut briller dans sa vie en étant le pilier de joie et de fraternité de sa famille 🔥.

À l’identique, un autre de mes amis, Paul, était depuis deux ans “en bilan de compétence” avec l’envie d’avoir un job qui a du sens. En discutant avec lui, il a réalisé que ce qui le faisait vibrer en réalité, c’est de PROFITER de la vie au sens “d’être le mec sympathique, avec qui tu es content d’échanger et de passer un moment de franche rigolade”. Et ça pas de bol, notre société ne dit pas haut et fort que : “On kiff les bons vivants qui nous remettent le sourire aux lèvres et qui nous font passer un moment de légèreté !”.

En prenant conscience de nos énormes valeurs ajoutées, il y a alors comme un DÉCLIC 💥… : on rentre dans un cercle vertueux : plus on a conscience de la valeur ajoutée que l’on apporte, plus on a envie de l’utiliser et plus on la montre davantage au grand jour. Et c’est à CE moment LA que la magie s’opère : les autres vont voir toute notre valeur : et l’on obtient alors cette fameuse reconnaissance que la société ne nous accordait pas. C’est alors beaucoup plus efficace (et rapide) que de faire l’inverse : attendre que les autres reconnaissent notre valeur, pour enfin en prendre conscience…

“Mais alors Paul, pourquoi chercher plus loin ? Le voilà ton bilan de compétence !” Les étincelles que cette idée provoque dans ses yeux, suffisent à comprendre que là était sa voix.

Et toi, ta ou tes VALEUR(S) AJOUTÉE(S), elles sont où ?

C’est une question simple, mais qui est source d’un énorme bond dans notre vie quand on y répond. Parce que c’est seulement une fois que l’on a CONSCIENCE de la valeur que l’on a :

👉 que l’on envie beaucoup moins les autres, de ce qu’il font, ou sont

👉que l’on arrête de poursuivre des objectifs qui ne nous correspondent pas (ou d’être frustré de ne pas trouver la force de poursuivre des objectifs que l’on croit être les nôtres)

👉 que l’on multiplie notre envie d’utiliser cette force et de la mettre au profit des autres.

👉 que l’on obtient enfin de la reconnaissance !

Et pour nos enfants c’est exactement la même chose. Et prenant nous-même conscience des valeurs ajoutées de notre enfant et en leur montrant en quoi faire ce qu’il aime naturellement faire peut être utile aux autres, on diminue naturellement la pression pour « être bon à l’école” “faire plaisir à machin” “être gentil avec bidule”. Car leurs forces naturelles prendront plus de place et leurs faiblesses (ou plutôt ce qu’il pense être ses faiblesses) paraîtront moins visibles.

NEW YORK — “So, nu?” you ask. Does Beanie Feldstein pull it off?

The question has been hanging over Broadway for weeks, as previews got underway of “Funny Girl,” the musical that, for 58 years, has been thought of as the exclusive property of Barbra Streisand. And for good reason: Streisand’s Fanny Brice, unveiled onstage in 1964 and immortalized in an Oscar-winning turn on film four years later, may be the most captivating musical-theater portrayal ever recorded.

It has taken guts for Feldstein to step into those proverbial shoes and sing and dance in them onstage at the August Wilson Theatre, where director Michael Mayer’s splashy Broadway revival, the first, had its official opening Sunday night. (On Streisand’s 80th birthday, no less.) One admires the pluck — an essential attribute when playing a character whose introductory number is titled “I’m the Greatest Star.” Rather than incandescent, though, Feldstein’s star turn is an earthbound achievement, best when she’s executing the comedy aspect of musical comedy, and less compelling at the music part. A better fit was her Minnie Fay in the “Hello, Dolly!” revival that starred Bette Midler.

Not bad by any measure, I must add: Her vocal skills are adequate. In a workmanlike vehicle built as a galvanizing showcase for its title character, though, you want to be taken for a ride that leaves you dizzy with the acceleration of such songs as “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” That’s simply the expectation “Funny Girl” sets up, and it’s also simply the case that, no matter how ardently we root for the endearing Feldstein — and we certainly do — that ignition never fully occurs.

So maybe, if you can lower your sights, you’ll find Mayer’s “Funny Girl” to be a pleasant diversion, an entertaining throwback to the heyday of musicals with lavish sets and costumes and show tunes that Mom and Dad (or Grandma and Granddad) cued up nightly on the stereo. This production accomplishes that, with the input of actors including Jane Lynch, a thoroughgoing delight as Brice’s mother — I’m coming to the conclusion that there’s nothing Lynch can’t do — and Jared Grimes as a tap-dancing whiz and Brice’s impossibly faithful friend, Eddie.

Speaking of impossible, Ramin Karimloo is on hand as Nicky Arnstein, the dreamboat who knocks Brice’s bloomers off. In Harvey Fierstein’s new revisions of Isobel Lennart’s original book for the show, Karimloo gets more to do, especially in applying his velvety baritone to added songs in a Jule Styne-Bob Merrill score — a song list that varies significantly from the 1968 movie. Arnstein, a poker player by trade, here gets his own socko second-act solo, the new “Temporary Arrangement,” that’s staged like a number out of “Guys and Dolls,” with a chorus of dancing gangsters.

Yet, even with the tinkering, Arnstein remains a second-tier stock character in a backstage bio-musical focusing on Brice’s rise in the 1920s to comic beacon in the extravaganzas of Florenz Ziegfeld (Peter Francis James, radiating class). The recurring jokes about the disparity in physical beauty between Arnstein and Brice have never struck me as particularly funny. “To tell the truth, it hurt my pride, the groom was prettier than the bride” is a clever lyric (in Feldstein’s “Sadie, Sadie”), but the repeated stress on the theme steals any serious exploration from their relationship. As a result, “Funny Girl” feels as superficial as those gauzy Ziegfeld numbers, expertly choreographed by Ellenore Scott and tap choreographer Ayodele Casel.

Outfitted in progressively more luscious frocks by Susan Hilferty, Feldstein makes a journey from nervy tyro to nervier pro. David Zinn contributes a smart set design, with a central, rounded brick apartment building whose walls part to reveal street scenes, hotel suites and showgirl-filled stages. Comparisons are anathema, sure, but they’re instructive in gauging the effect of Feldstein’s performance amid all the theatrical refinements. While, for instance, you believed outright that Streisand was a star, with Feldstein, your foremost belief is that she believes she’s a star. It’s a distinction with a difference, in that, with this latest Fanny Brice, that powerhouse illusion at times requires more cooperative effort from the audience.

Some useful internal electricity does get switched on in Feldstein for the Follies production numbers, which constitute her best moments. She’s an adorably winning clown in “His Love Makes Me Beautiful,” the song that Brice sabotages out of insecurity over her looks (that theme again). In Act 2′s “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat,” a silly Follies salute to the armed forces, Feldstein emerges in uniform, goofy glasses, thick Yiddish accent and a pair of bagels on her belt. Pointing to her nosh-able arsenal, Feldstein delivers the punchline perfectly. “Onion or poppy seed?” she asks.

Given the pedigree of the brassy “Don’t Rain on My Parade” — one of those killer damn-the-torpedoes anthems that reliably raise heart rates — Feldstein has the immense task of sending the audience into intermission on a literal high note. She sings her heart out, and if it were just heart that was called for, she’d be a Fanny Brice for the ages.

Danai, 44, turned every head as she arrived to the Longacre Theatre on Thursday in a vibrant yellow and black coat which cinched into her waist.

She strutted down the pink carpet in glossy black heels and further dressed up the look with bright gold hoop earrings and several rings.

Earlier this month, the English actor bowed out of the preview play with less than two hours until its commencement, through an announcement on the show’s Twitter page.

Tony Award-winner Sam Gold will direct. Barbara Broccoli, who produces the James Bond films with her brother, is a producer.

Daniel was last on stage in a 2013 revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal opposite his wife, Rachel Weisz, and directed by Mike Nichols.

He also starred opposite Hugh Jackman in 2009’s A Steady Rain. Sam directed him in a 2016 off-Broadway production of Othello alongside David Oyelowo.
