“Cinema doors have been open to Netflix movies for years,” assures John Fithian, the boss of the national association of owners of dark rooms in the United States.

The organizer of the CinemaCon festival in Las Vegas keeps repeating that, contrary to what the ominous birds of the industry want to say, the streaming giant will not cause the disappearance of cinemas, films on the big screen and popcorn.

Now that the box office is starting to recover from the blows inflicted by the pandemic and Netflix has just suffered its first loss of subscribers in over a decade, cinemas could even help the platform adapt to a most uncertain future. , insists John Fithian.

He says he had “many talks” with Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos for “urge him to try to see if they couldn’t do well in theaters as well.”

“I don’t care about the stock price one way or the other. I just look at the stats…Even if you’re streaming, you can make more money if you release your best movies first in cinemas, he throws.

Release films on the big screen before making them available to subscribers? The idea seems the opposite of the economic model chosen by Netflix, which major studios like Disney or Warner have frantically tried to emulate in recent years by launching their own streaming platforms.

After renting DVDs by post, Netflix had revolutionized the entertainment market by poaching Hollywood stars and talents with billions to produce movies and series to watch at home. But the net loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter announced last week panicked Wall Street, where Netflix shares plunged 30%.

The platform, which anticipates a drop of two million subscribers in the second quarter, has already announced the implementation of new strategies to curb the phenomenon, including previously unthinkable solutions, such as cheaper subscriptions but with advertising. In this light, the release of Netflix films in the cinema before streaming would no longer seem so absurd.

For now, the platform is content to show its films in a small number of theaters in order to satisfy the rules of the Oscars and other film awards.

But John Fithian “think the Netflix model could evolve” towards an increased presence in cinemas. “We hope”underlines the president of the organization, who says representing some 35,000 screens in the United States.”

A theatrical release allows a film to “stand out better” while those who “go straight to streaming get lost”, he pleads.

The mood of theater bosses in Las Vegas is noticeably better than during the previous edition of CinemaCon in August 2021, when the latest variant of Covid-19 spooked viewers and studios bypassed theaters to release their films. streamed directly.

John Fithian even took the luxury this week of proclaiming that the trend of putting films simultaneously in cinemas and on the internet on the same day, inaugurated during the pandemic, was “dead”. “It didn’t come out of nowhere. I said that after consulting with a lot of our studio partners”he specified.

Major American studios have recently announced that they are returning to a “window” exclusivity for films in the cinema, even though they have reduced this period to 45 days from around 90 before the pandemic. Despite this improvement and the outstretched hand to Netflix, cinemas still have reason to worry.

John Fithian says so to himself “very worried” from another streaming giant, Amazon Prime. According to him, the economic model of this platform is not to “make money with movies” but rather to attract the barge so that there “shop and go through its delivery service”.

Amazon Prime has just bought MGM studios, which notably produce the James Bond franchise, for $8.5 billion. If Amazon Prime wants to remove films from cinemas “to deliver them only at home, they reduce consumer choice as well as competition”, dlaments John Fithian.

For its part, Apple TV+ last month became the first video-on-demand service to win the supreme Oscar for best feature film for CODA. A cinematic year judged quite simply “very weird” by John Fithian.

In the study, published in Nature, researchers initially found that mice on low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diets have a striking resistance to colorectal tumor development and growth. The scientists then traced this effect to beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a small organic molecule produced in the liver in response to keto diets or starvation.

“Our findings suggest that this natural molecule, BHB, could someday become a standard part of colorectal cancer care and prevention,” said study co-senior author Maayan Levy, PhD, an assistant professor of Microbiology at Penn Medicine, whose laboratory collaborated with the lab of Christoph Thaiss, PhD, also an assistant professor of Microbiology. The study’s first author was Oxana Dmitrieva-Posocco, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in Levy’s lab.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancer types and kills more than 50,000 Americans annually, making it the country’s third leading cause of cancer mortality. Alcohol use, obesity, red meat, and low-fiber and high-sugar diets have all been linked to greater colorectal cancer risk.

In the study, Levy, Thaiss and their teams set out to determine, with experiments in mice, whether different types of diet could inhibit colorectal cancer development and growth. They put six groups of mice on diets that had varying fat-to-carb ratios, and then used a standard chemical technique that normally induces colorectal tumors.

They found that the two most ketogenic diets, with 90 percent fat-to-carb ratios — one used lard (pig fat), the other Crisco (mostly soybean oil) — prevented colorectal tumor development in most of the animals on those diets. By contrast, all the animals on the other diets, including low-fat, high-carb diets, developed tumors. Even when the researchers started the mice on these diets after colorectal tumors had started growing, the diets showed a “treatment effect” by markedly slowing further tumor growth and proliferation.

In subsequent experiments, the scientists determined that this tumor suppression is associated with a slower production, by stem cells, of new epithelial cells lining the colon. Ultimately, they traced this gut-cell growth slowdown to BHB — normally produced by the liver as part of a “starvation response,” and triggered in this case by the low-carb keto diets.

BHB is known to work as an alternative fuel source for key organs in low-carb conditions. However, the researchers showed that it is not only a fuel source but also a potent growth-slowing signal, at least for gut-lining cells. They were able to reproduce the tumor-suppressing effects of the keto diets simply by giving the mice BHB, either in their water or via an infusion mimicking the liver’s natural secretion of the molecule.

The team showed that BHB exerts its gut-cell growth-slowing effect by activating a surface receptor called Hcar2. This in turn stimulates the expression of a growth-slowing gene, Hopx.

Experiments with gut-lining cells from humans provided evidence that BHB has the same growth-slowing effect on these cells, via the human versions of Hcar2 and Hopx. Colorectal tumor cells that don’t express these two genes were not responsive to BHB treatment, suggesting their utility as possible predictors of treatment efficiency.

“Clinical trials of BHB supplementation are needed before any recommendation can be made about its use in prevention or treatment,” Thaiss said.

The researchers are now setting up just such a clinical trial of BHB — which is widely available as a dieting supplement — in colorectal cancer patients. They are also continuing to study BHB’s potential anticancer effects in other parts of the body, and are investigating the effects of other molecules produced under ketogenic conditions.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health (R01 CA218133, R01 CA227629, P30 CA-006927, DP2AG067511, P30 ES013508, DP2AG067492, P30-DK-050306, P30-AR-069589, P30-DK-019525), the BSF US-Israel Foundation, the Searle Scholar program, the Pew Charitable Trust, the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation, the Abramson Cancer Center, the Borrelli Family, the Global Probiotics Council, the National Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Centers, the IDSA Foundation, and the Thyssen Foundation.

For this Thursday evening, the editorial staff therefore offers you the films An Ordinary Spy and OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spies.

What films to watch tonight on Canal+?

A True and Incredible Spy Story: An Ordinary Spy

Synopsis

1962. A simple British trade representative, Greville Wynne is asked by MI-6 and the CIA to make a secret and dangerous agreement with Soviet Colonel Oleg Penkovsky, in order to smuggle documents to Westerners and defuse the missile crisis of Cuba. He will then begin a series of risky round trips between London and Moscow…

The opinion of CNET France

History is full of little-known destinies, each crazier than the next, which books, films and series have brought to light over time. An Ordinary Spy precisely proposes to tell the hallucinating but true story of Greville Wynne, a modest businessman who was led to become a spy during the Cold War.

Starting from this intriguing and exciting starting point, An Ordinary Spy sure to please fans of spy movies and political thrillers, and will remind some The Bridge of Spies by Steven Spielberg. Between London and Moscow, the film builds a devilishly effective tension that rises to a crescendo as the main character takes risks.

At the center of the film, Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a high quality performance, especially in the last third of the film, where his physical transformation is impressive. His atypical and endearing character as a salesman gives an original dimension to a thriller that (too) methodically takes up all the codes of the genre. The rest of the cast is also very good, and you will recognize in particular the excellent Rachel Brosnahan (The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel) and Jessie Buckley (Fargo).

Without necessarily reinventing the genre, An Ordinary Spy remains an effective thriller, gripping and breathless, which will keep you in suspense until the last moment, thanks to the authenticity of its story, and the quality of its interpreters.

A Cult Spy Comedy: OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies

Synopsis

1955, in Egypt. The capital of Cairo is a real nest of spies: English, French, Soviets, and Egyptians plot and want to take power. René Coty, the French President, therefore sends his best man to bring order to this chaos: Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, known as OSS 117.

The opinion of CNET France

Canal+ subscribers, rejoice: the complete adventures of OSS 117 are available in the catalogue! Among the three films with Jean Dujardin, our preference obviously goes to the first opus, which has become a real cult film, and a spy comedy that is still just as effective and hilarious, more than 15 years after its release.

Directed by Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), and co-written by Hazanavicius and Jean-François Halin (Greenland, At the service of France), OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spies is a true love letter to spy films of the 60s, and to James Bond version Sean Connery. And the pastiche is of high quality: from the fine writing, between love of the genre and incisive second degree, to the costumes, sets and codes of the genre, everything is remarkably accurate and extremely effective.

In this delicate balancing act between homage and mockery, the film comes out brilliantly and notably manages to make endearing a backward, idiotic and macho hero, played wonderfully by Jean Dujardin, who finds here one of the emblematic roles of her career. He is accompanied by a gallery of solid supporting roles (Bérénice Bejo, Aura Atika, Philippe Lefebvre) and real cinema “mouths” (Richard Sammel, Claude Brosset, Constantin Alexandrov).

OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spies is a film that you have probably already seen, as it has become cult in France, and its sequels (Rio no longer responds and Red alert in black Africa) were also great successes. Nevertheless, it is a safe bet that will embellish your evening, and a comedy classic to be reviewed without moderation.

The production of “Tango & Cash” was no picnic. Dismissal of several members of the team, constant rewrites, threats… Back on some twists and turns of the filming of the action film with Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

Tango & Cash : very good cops

“They’re cops…they’re rivals…and it kills them to work together.” How not to succumb to such a hook, full of promise? After Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte in 48 Hoursafter Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in The lethal WeaponSylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell take part in the heyday of the buddy movie american with Tango & Cash, feature film by Andrei Konchalovsky (Runaway Train) and released in 1990.

The first lends its features to Ray Tango. The second embodies Gabriel Cash. As the two oppositely styled lieutenants vie for the title of LA’s Best Cop, their crime-fighting efficiency puts a strain on the nerves of trafficker Yves Perret (Jack Palance). The latter does not spare his efforts to try to eliminate them. With the help of his henchman Requin (Brion James), the boss manages to trap them and have them charged, thinking he has put them in the shade for good.

It was without counting on the tenacity of these two leaders of the LAPD, even more gifted when they join forces. With the support of a few allies including Kiki (Teri Hatcher), Tango’s sister, the duo will do everything possible to bring down Perret in this action-comedy filled with must-have facesstarting with those of James Hong, Edward Bunker or even Robert Z’Dar, the terrifying Matt Cordell of Maniac Cop.

A complicated shoot

If on arrival, Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone undoubtedly form one of the most beautiful duos in the history of cinema in an unforgettable film, the production of Tango & Cash is marked by many pitfalls. Originally, the interpreter of Rocky Balboa must give the reply to another actor who multiplied the hair experiments at that time, Patrick Swayze. Nevertheless, as recalled Rockyramathe latter withdraws to turn road house. Jon Peters then appeals to Kurt Russell, who accepts after having refused the role of Martin Riggs in The lethal Weapon.

Tango & Cash ©Warner Bros.

It’s just a problem solved for the producer. Filming begins when screenwriter Randy Feldman has not finished his script. Sylvester Stallone is therefore responsible for writing most of the dialogue. The actor also decides to fire the director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld, future director of The Addams Family and of Men in Black, not being satisfied with his work. Donald E. Thorin, who just collaborated with the star on High securityanother project where Sly has to do battle behind bars.

“The worst production I have ever worked on”

Throughout the filming, the rewrites are constant, as well as the ego problems. Andreï Konchalovsky has a particular vision for the film, which he fails to impose, as the scriptwriter Randy Feldman tells us, quoted by Rockyrama :

He really wanted to deconstruct the iconic image of Sylvester Stallone. During the escape scene, he wanted him to climb a gigantic phallic structure, for example. There was a whole subversive subtext to his vision for the film, and he couldn’t bring it to fruition.

A 700 m2 tool which comes at the right time for the twentieth anniversary of the integration structure specializing in the recycling of unsold bread. Founded in 2002 by the associations Route and Bread Against Hunger, the workshop, formerly based in Orvault then Sautron, has seen its activity ramp up, to the point of becoming today one of the key players in the fight against food waste in the Nantes region. Some 1,100 tonnes of bread and pastries were collected last year, compared to barely 200 tonnes at the start.

“We collect the goods directly from bakeries and supermarkets with the help of our volunteers,” explains Antoine Sorin, president of bread against hunger. That represents 280 points of sale all around Nantes. We avoid these businesses having to manage their surpluses, we also allow them to have a tax certificate. And we leave with goods to be valued. It’s a win-win. The collected stocks, four tons per day on average, are intended for animal feed. White breads and baguettes are resold in breadcrumbs for the Terrena agricultural cooperative. Cereal breads, pancakes and pastries are used, mixed with milk, to feed a large pig farm in Rouans (Loire-Atlantique).

” It’s good for the planet. We feel useful”

But before getting there, there is work in the Bara’mel workshop. “Once unloaded, the bread is sorted manually. It must then be cut using machines, sent to the drying chamber, and, finally, put it through the grinder, ”describes Rozenn Le Pabic, executive assistant at Trajet. The process is operated by 33 employees in integration. These people who are far from the world of work, sometimes without training or fluency in the French language, have support at the workshop, including administrative support, to gradually regain a “professional framework” and “self-esteem”. .

“We shoot at all positions, often in pairs,” says Radhia, 37. The atmosphere is pleasant. Everyone works at their own pace. This Somalian, who is thinking about continuing in the field of pastry, also appreciates carrying out a mission that makes sense. “What we do is good for the planet. We feel useful,” she says.

“Often the expiry date is not exceeded”

The president of the association bread against hunger, which also supports humanitarian projects in developing countries, recalls that Bara’mel was a “pioneer” in 2002 in the fight against food waste. “Many other actors have since become involved. We also note that unsold goods from small traders are tending to decrease. All of this is obviously going in the right direction. »

In supermarkets, on the other hand, awareness seems less visible. “Their policy is to have fresh bread, of any type, at any time of the day. So there are a lot of losses. Often the expiry date is not exceeded. A large area can thus give us 600 kg to 700 kg per week! And she also donates to humanitarian associations of course. For our older volunteers, this waste is shocking. Bread has a very strong symbolic value. In their education, it was unthinkable to throw it away. »

In twenty years of activity, Bara’mel can pride itself on having recycled 16,000 tons of bread, the equivalent of 64 million baguettes. And to have accompanied 550 employees in integration. The Herblinois workshop can now project itself towards a new outlet: by 2023, place for the manufacture of “bread croutons and aperitif toast”, in addition to its sales for animal feed. “We are working on this project with Oniris (National Food School of Nantes), says Rozenn Le Pabic. The workspace is already ready. It will require slightly more demanding missions. It’s motivating for the team. »

9. The fighter

Now a novel study by researchers from BUSM and Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) provides further evidence suggesting a dose-response relationship between football and CTE even after adjusting for selection bias.

CTE is a progressive brain disease associated with repetitive head impacts. It has been diagnosed after death in American football players and other contact sport athletes as well as members of the armed services and victims of physical abuse.

“The validity of research involving CTE has been questioned due to the inherent bias in the selection process of brain donation studies. A prior BUSM study that identified a strong dose-response relationship between years of football played and likelihood of developing CTE, which supports a cause-effect relationship between repeated head impacts and CTE, has been ignored by some sports organizations due to claims of selection bias. To respond to such criticism, there is a significant need to adjust for it in the analytical phases of these studies,” explains corresponding author Yorghos Tripodis, PhD, professor of biostatistics at BUSPH.

Utilizing data from Veterans Affairs-Boston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation (VA-BU-CLF) Brain Bank, the researchers undertook a new study to analyze 290 male former football players to further clarify the dose-response relationship. After developing multiple statistical models to adjust for selection bias, college and professional football players respectively were found to have a 2.38 and 2.47 times higher risk of being diagnosed with CTE relative to high school players.

“Strikingly, these risk ratios were actually heightened after accounting for selection bias. This is in stark comparison to the previous critiques received as it suggests that prior data may actually underestimate risk of CTE in these populations,” said Tripodis.

The researchers also calculated the minimum cumulative incidence of CTE for different levels of play. They found the minimum possible cumulative incidence for professional players is one in 10, one in 250 for college football players, and 1 in 20,000 for high school players. However, they anticipate future studies will reveal the actual risk is many times higher for each level of play.

The authors end by prompting the need for further investigation into the type of participants that are under-represented in the brain bank leading to this selection bias and the need for additional recruitment efforts targeted at these populations to allow for additional study.

“Our new study provides further evidence to support a dose-response relationship between playing football and developing CTE. We hope the football community will accelerate reforms aimed at preventing CTE by limiting head impacts for players and that parents will use this information to make more informed choices about sports participation for their children,” he adds.

These findings appear online in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

But how is it possible that such a site is authorized in France?

In the sights of American justice for several years, Omegle had not yet made the headlines in France. In 2017, the site was involved in a criminal case between the United Kingdom and the United States. It had served for a contact between an American pedophile woman, waitress and stripper in San Francisco, and a British couple, convicted of acts of sexual assault on minors under 13 years old. The American had admitted during the couple’s trial in Plymouth (Great Britain), that she had met him on Omegle where she had typed as a keyword to find common interests, the term “pedophile”. They then went on the Skype platform to commit the main crimes charged.

On Wednesday, Adrien Taquet, Secretary of State for Children announced that he was going to report to justice, the messaging platform for “exposure of minors to pornography and pedocrime”. But for Thomas Rohmer, we must go further. “Protecting children in digital spaces, yes, it encroaches on certain individual freedoms, we must not put on blinders. But it is necessary. These are societal choices that have already been decided on the sale of alcohol, tobacco in particular”. He ardently asks that a social debate be launched to stop “opposing child protection and freedom of expression”. Because this Chatroulette version 2022 is only one more example of the lack of effective regulation of the digital space, “the same sea serpent as access to porn sites and the current legal disputes on the subject”.

Digital education is everyone’s business

The novelty with Omegle, according to the president of the Open, “is the pernicious role of influencers”. Youtubers and tiktokers would be behind the arrival on this video chat of the youngest: “What is their responsibility when they suggest to their community that they can, with a little luck, chat with their idol in connecting to Omegle? asks Thomas Rohmer. Not to mention the deliberate lie of this message: statistically, the chances of “falling” on their favorite influencer are tiny. “These influencers need to be aware of their responsibility in this kind of incitement. »
