The show, from producer-distributor Dynamic Television and AMC-owned streamer Acorn TV, has also been pre-bought by Mediawan for French-speaking Europe, while RTÉ in Ireland has come on board as the Irish broadcaster.
The 8 x 60-minute series has been created and written by David Logan (Lost Christmas) and co-written by Jo Spain (Taken Down). It follows a recently retired English professor who discovers a knack for investigation and cannot help but interfere with the cases assigned to her police detective son. It’s set to debut early 2022.

Nine Network in Australia has extended factual entertainment show Space Invaders into a second season, with TVNZ and SBS in Belgium among those picking up finished tape rights.
The original 10 x 60-minute series, which follows people de-cluttering their houses, was created and produced by WTFN for Nine, with WTFN parent Fred Media selling globally.
The Australian broadcaster’s second 10-part season will go into production in the second half of 2021, with channels in eight territories also in talks to acquire finished tape to the show.
Local versions are also in the works with producers across Europe, with Leonine Studios in Germany, WeMake in France and Aito Media in Finland among those to have optioned format rights.
US producer Critical Content has also struck a deal with Fred Media to rep the format stateside.

He continued: ‘I wasn’t able to meet her until 2018, when she interviewed me with some of the Good Omens team at New York Comic Con. At which point she mentioned that she had just finished listening to Sir Lenny Henry’s reading of Anansi Boys, and that it was one of her favorite books.’
Gaiman said that ‘sometimes things feel planned and inevitable,’ and the production was ‘incredibly lucky’ to ink Goldberg, who is ‘going to be scary’ playing Bird Woman, who brings a danger to the universe as the God of Birds.

Goldberg later took to Twitter to offer her ‘sincerest apologies’ about her statement.
She said, ‘On Today’s show, I said the Holocaust “is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it is about both.
‘As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, “The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race.” I stand corrected.’
Goldberg said ‘the Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never’ waver, adding that she was ‘sorry for the hurt [she had] caused.’
Upon her return to the ABC show February 14, she said that the show would not avoid discussions about uncomfortable topics.
‘There is something kind of marvelous about being on a show like this because we are The View and this is what we do,’ Goldberg said. ‘Sometimes we don’t do it as elegantly as we could. But it’s five minutes to get in information about topics and that’s what we try to do everyday.’

ALTON — The movies aren’t the only hits that keep on coming at NCG Cinema in the Alton Square Mall.
The eight-screen theater complex features recliner-type seating, unlimited popcorn refills, beer and wine sales, and other amenities that have kept patrons going to the movies locally.
NCG Cinema is part of a nine-state chain with 25 theaters and another soon to open.
“Every one of our theaters is slightly different, depending on when they were opened and what the community is looking for,” said NCG executive officer for business development Ryan Jankovic. “In Alton, we tried to include as much as we possibly can.”
Jankovic said the response to the Alton NCG Cinema has been “wonderful, everything we had hoped for and more” since the theater’s debut in late March 2021. And he said it’s no secret what patrons consider to be the cinema’s greatest amenity.
“You’re spending a couple of hours in the seats. So people are really enjoying the comfortable seats that they get the opportunity to sit in,” Jankovic said. “And you can’t have a movie experience without the popcorn. So the no charge for refills popcorn has been a favorite in the Alton area.”
The movie selection helps too, with the theater’s combination of the latest hits, old favorites and movies for kids. A lot goes into deciding which films get screened in Alton, Jankovic said.
“It’s more art than science,” he said. “A lot of it depends on how many screens you have and the demand.
“Sometimes we get local requests; you might have a local movie producer who wants to show something in the area,” he said. “Sometimes it just depends on the contracts we have with studios, because we have to show certain releases for a certain amount of time.”
Movie theaters had to close completely during the COVID-19 pandemic; reopening dates depended on the states where the theaters were located. When reopenings did occur, the movie theater industry depended on guidance from the National Association of Theater Owners organization, which developed its Cinemasafe protocols for cleaning and social distancing.
Jankovic said NCG was already doing much of what Cinemasafe called for,
“It’s what we hang our hat on; we talk about it first at every staff and leadership meeting, and this is cleanliness,” Jankovic said. “Even before COVID, cleanliness was critical and it remains that way.
“People can go in and feel comfortable,” he said. “They know that items are clean and taken care of, whether it’s in the theater or restrooms or lobby.”
NCG Cinema Alton also can be rented for parties, meetings or special showings. Jankovic said interest in private events has seen a recent surge.
“It’s really important that we are listening to our communities, that we are providing a venue,” Jankovic said. “Someone may want to privately rent one or two theaters. Sometimes they show their own content that they produced, or just have a business meeting in one of our theaters. And we’ve always had birthday parties here.”
NCG Cinema is a significant Riverbend employer with 35 employees during normal times and up to 60 during the peak movie season in November and December.
“We had a new hiring day when we opened in Alton and had well over 300 people show up for our hiring fair,” Jankovic said. “It’s been nothing but constant enthusiasm and support from the movie watching public, from our employees and the community.
“We couldn’t be happier to be in Alton.”

Mip TV Comes To An End
We got there eventually: The first Cannes-based Mip TV for three years took place earlier this week and, after some initial travel chaos that had the entire UK contingent scrabbling to reach Nice airport by Sunday night, things settled into a familiar pattern. In a sense, Mip TV felt like an extension of the previous fortnight’s Series Mania in that streamers and European talent were top of everyone’s talking-point lists. Delivering a keynote, HBO Max Global Boss Johannes Larcher talked up his streamer’s position in Europe, declaring “it’s not always best to be first.” Meanwhile, Candle Media Co-Founder Kevin Mayer, one of the founding fathers of Disney+, gave attendees a window into his strategy and Sony International Production Boss Wayne Garvie detailed grand ambitions to be “Britain’s biggest drama studio.”
Thin footfall: While positive vibes were always present on the Croisette, most sources agreed footfall felt a little thin on the ground. Mip TV came so soon after Series Mania and the ever-growing London Screenings, and the feeling was that many of the larger companies had slimmed down their usual delegation size. “This is a relationships market and a reset market, not a sales market,” said one senior distribution boss. Organizers said there were more than 5000 delegates from 80 countries, more than October’s larger Mipcom although that market had restricted access due to Coronavirus. One thing’s for certain, the industry is breathing cautious sighs of relief that this dreadful pandemic has moved into its next phase. Roll on next October.

Channel 4 Sold
“Making the UK’s great TV industry worse”: In the biggest shake up to British broadcasting for decades, beloved alternative network Channel 4 is going to be sold by the government. News leaked Monday evening (did it really have to happen during Mip TV’s opening night party?) and before long the backlash had started. “Why do they want to make the UK’s great TV industry worse?,” Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci positively screamed on Twitter. Opponents’ ire is aimed mostly at the likely changes incoming to Channel 4’s remit, which could allow it to produce its own shows for the first time in 40 years and take away its drive to commission the hundreds of small production companies that have used the network’s shows as a bedrock to grow their businesses for decades.
What comes next?: Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon was quick to stress BAU at a town hall-style meeting for all staff, with the whole process set to take around two years. Rumored to be buying are ITV, Comcast, Paramount and Discovery, along with outside European bets such as Vivendi and Bertelsmann.
Warner Bros Discovery Goes Global
International relations: The magnitude of deals like Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Bros is both a thrill and gigantic headache for those folk invested in their outcome and, with David Zaslav’s top-tier Warner Bros Discovery executive team now confirmed, the structure of the international business is in the spotlight. JB Perrette is leaving the UK, where he oversaw streaming and international for Discovery, to return to the U.S. and lead Warner Bros Discovery Global Streaming and Interactive Entertainment, leaving WarnerMedia’s Gerhard Zeiler to become International President of the new look biz. Intriguingly, he reports into Zaslav on channels and brand matters, but will feedback to Perrette on streaming and international distributions.
Down the line: There are several other layers of this onion to peel – for example, will Zaslav and co look to streamline the sprawling Warner Bros and Discovery channels and content operations in Europe and Asia? Rumours abound that Discovery’s somewhat confusing regional hubs structure (CEEMEA, anyone?) will be simplified with a single leader for Europe. EMEA President & MD Kasia Kieli is well-liked at WarnerMedia and a decent bet for a bigger position, should one come up, while Priya Dogra, WarnerMedia’s EMEA and APAC Chief, is regarded as a strong operator. Much to come on this fast-moving story.
Optimism For 2022 Cannes Fest
Back to business: It’s been a bumpy few years for the film festival landscape, but the team behind Cannes Film Festival, still seen by many as the most prestigious fest in the world, are feeling good about the prospects for 2022. Last year’s edition was staged physically but remained dominated by the specter of Covid, with roughly half of the 10,000 professional delegates attending virtually. This year the hope is for something much closer to business as normal.
Asia returns: This week, the fest told Deadline that it is forecasting only 10% of delegates to be virtual attendees, with the remainder traveling to France. Even in Asia, where the strictest Covid restrictions endure, there is a “palpable” appetite to be back in Cannes, according to the head of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. One country that will be visiting the fest for the first time is Mongolia, which is set to launch a new Film Commission. Read more.
Anticipated selection: All eyes have turned to the line-up announcement, which is scheduled to take place next Thursday (April 14). A small number of titles have already been announced, including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which the fest confirmed this week will debut on the Croisette.

Controversy: Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi has found himself at the center of a legal battle, with a former student of his, Azadeh Masihzadeh, accusing the filmmaker of stealing the idea for A Hero from her documentary All Winners All Losers. Reports circulated this week that Farhadi had been found guilty, but in a statement his producer Alexandre Mallet-Guy said the case is not over. Read more.

Mip TV Comes To An End
We got there eventually: The first Cannes-based Mip TV for three years took place earlier this week and, after some initial travel chaos that had the entire UK contingent scrabbling to reach Nice airport by Sunday night, things settled into a familiar pattern. In a sense, Mip TV felt like an extension of the previous fortnight’s Series Mania in that streamers and European talent were top of everyone’s talking-point lists. Delivering a keynote, HBO Max Global Boss Johannes Larcher talked up his streamer’s position in Europe, declaring “it’s not always best to be first.” Meanwhile, Candle Media Co-Founder Kevin Mayer, one of the founding fathers of Disney+, gave attendees a window into his strategy and Sony International Production Boss Wayne Garvie detailed grand ambitions to be “Britain’s biggest drama studio.”
Thin footfall: While positive vibes were always present on the Croisette, most sources agreed footfall felt a little thin on the ground. Mip TV came so soon after Series Mania and the ever-growing London Screenings, and the feeling was that many of the larger companies had slimmed down their usual delegation size. “This is a relationships market and a reset market, not a sales market,” said one senior distribution boss. Organizers said there were more than 5000 delegates from 80 countries, more than October’s larger Mipcom although that market had restricted access due to Coronavirus. One thing’s for certain, the industry is breathing cautious sighs of relief that this dreadful pandemic has moved into its next phase. Roll on next October.

Channel 4 Sold
“Making the UK’s great TV industry worse”: In the biggest shake up to British broadcasting for decades, beloved alternative network Channel 4 is going to be sold by the government. News leaked Monday evening (did it really have to happen during Mip TV’s opening night party?) and before long the backlash had started. “Why do they want to make the UK’s great TV industry worse?,” Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci positively screamed on Twitter. Opponents’ ire is aimed mostly at the likely changes incoming to Channel 4’s remit, which could allow it to produce its own shows for the first time in 40 years and take away its drive to commission the hundreds of small production companies that have used the network’s shows as a bedrock to grow their businesses for decades.
What comes next?: Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon was quick to stress BAU at a town hall-style meeting for all staff, with the whole process set to take around two years. Rumored to be buying are ITV, Comcast, Paramount and Discovery, along with outside European bets such as Vivendi and Bertelsmann.
Warner Bros Discovery Goes Global
International relations: The magnitude of deals like Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Bros is both a thrill and gigantic headache for those folk invested in their outcome and, with David Zaslav’s top-tier Warner Bros Discovery executive team now confirmed, the structure of the international business is in the spotlight. JB Perrette is leaving the UK, where he oversaw streaming and international for Discovery, to return to the U.S. and lead Warner Bros Discovery Global Streaming and Interactive Entertainment, leaving WarnerMedia’s Gerhard Zeiler to become International President of the new look biz. Intriguingly, he reports into Zaslav on channels and brand matters, but will feedback to Perrette on streaming and international distributions.
Down the line: There are several other layers of this onion to peel – for example, will Zaslav and co look to streamline the sprawling Warner Bros and Discovery channels and content operations in Europe and Asia? Rumours abound that Discovery’s somewhat confusing regional hubs structure (CEEMEA, anyone?) will be simplified with a single leader for Europe. EMEA President & MD Kasia Kieli is well-liked at WarnerMedia and a decent bet for a bigger position, should one come up, while Priya Dogra, WarnerMedia’s EMEA and APAC Chief, is regarded as a strong operator. Much to come on this fast-moving story.
Optimism For 2022 Cannes Fest
Back to business: It’s been a bumpy few years for the film festival landscape, but the team behind Cannes Film Festival, still seen by many as the most prestigious fest in the world, are feeling good about the prospects for 2022. Last year’s edition was staged physically but remained dominated by the specter of Covid, with roughly half of the 10,000 professional delegates attending virtually. This year the hope is for something much closer to business as normal.
Asia returns: This week, the fest told Deadline that it is forecasting only 10% of delegates to be virtual attendees, with the remainder traveling to France. Even in Asia, where the strictest Covid restrictions endure, there is a “palpable” appetite to be back in Cannes, according to the head of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. One country that will be visiting the fest for the first time is Mongolia, which is set to launch a new Film Commission. Read more.
Anticipated selection: All eyes have turned to the line-up announcement, which is scheduled to take place next Thursday (April 14). A small number of titles have already been announced, including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which the fest confirmed this week will debut on the Croisette.

Cape Town-headquartered Arte Viva Management (Arte Viva) is expanding globally with the launch of a new roster of primarily Southern African acts at this month’s International Live Music Conference (ILMC).
Founded in 2016, the booking, management and touring agency also has a European office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and counts a collective 60 years of experience among its team, including tour production in territories such as Africa, Latin America and Europe.
Prior to Covid-19, the company focused on in-bound tours for international music clients and had already produced some 20 tours around South and Southern Africa for artists including Adrian Iaies (Argentina), Hildegard Lernt Fliegen (Switzerland), Coco Zhao (China) and Bokani Dyer (SA).
It was also commissioned to produce and manage the Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra tour to SA in 2020 with Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves before its postponement due to the pandemic.

Arte Viva’s hand-picked roster predominantly features artists from Southern Africa, with genres spanning World-Fusion to SA Jazz, Afro- Soul & Folk, including The One Who Sings, Hope Masike, Abavuki, Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane, Mandla Mlangeni, Thandeka Dladla, The Lady Day Big Band, The Unity Band, Mthwakazi and China’s Coco Zhao – the one international performer selected by the Arte Viva team for his “exquisite singing and sensitively articulated fusion of Jazz with traditional Chinese music”.
ILMC 34 will take place in person from 26–29 April 2022 at its longstanding home, the Royal Garden Hotel in London
Arte Viva’s presence at the event is supported by the South African Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, through its Mzansi Golden Economy programme. Arte Viva has used the funding as an investment injection into the launch of the new roster and says it has the requisite experience in coordinating multiple stakeholders and partners to realise sustainable touring that works for all parties and opens the world stage for ongoing prospects.

Anansi Boys is set throughout contemporary London and follows an exciting cast of characters in an epic story that stretches from the UK to Florida, the Caribbean, and the mythical World Before Time. The series is currently filming in Scotland and will premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Anansi Boys follows Charlie Nancy (Malachi Kirby)—sometimes known as Fat Charlie (it was his father’s nickname for him; he’s not fat)—a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that he was Anansi: Trickster God of stories (played by Delroy Lindo). And he learns that he has a brother. Now that brother, Spider (also played by Kirby), is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting—but making it a lot more dangerous instead.
Whoopi Goldberg will take up the mantle of Bird Woman, God of Birds and one of the show’s key antagonists. Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, has acquired the exclusive North American to the action drama The Way, directed, written and produced by award-winning filmmaker Dastan Khalili of Alliance of Light Films.
The Waywill be available via streaming platforms and on demand on cable and satellite networks beginning early 2022. The deal was negotiated by Khalili and Megan Huggins, on behalf of Gravitas Ventures.
“My vision for the film was to integrate emerging masculine and feminine models into my storytelling and I feel I have accomplished this in The Way,” comments Khalili. “The film features a powerful female lead and a cast that is multi-racial and multicultural, mirroring humanity. The spiritual journeys of the main characters are vital to the storyline, affecting their choices and paths to achieving ultimate redemption.”
The Way is the story of Jane Arcs (Eli Jane), who thirteen years ago was condemned to death after brutally killing her opponent in an underground street fight. Now, in just 24 hours, Jane will be executed for her crime. During her years on Death Row, Jane has undergone a major evolution under the tutelage of a fellow inmate and Qi Gong Master Xin (Joan Wong/ the niece of Kung-Fu Master Wong Jack Man, who was best known for his controversial duel with Bruce Lee in 1964), learning the way of Qi Gong and ostensibly gaining supernatural abilities. As the day of her execution arrives, Jane embraces her punishment in the spirit of transformation. Max Stone (Kelcey Watson), Jane’s boyfriend as well as correctional officer and part of the execution tie down team, has very different ideas. He is willing to do anything to save Jane. Will he kill others to save her life? Or will Jane help him to see the light and to let her go? The story climaxes as the essence of spirit collides with the raw power of desire, ultimately bringing the audience full circle in seeing how both are essential to being human.
