She secretly hopes being friends with Lisa will soon change all that.
When it comes to dating, someone like Kim requires a substantial learning curve. Lisa, on the other hand, is in a hurry to grow up and thinks everyone her age should do the same. She fails to ponder Kim’s real needs as she pushes her toward meeting Adrian. With Kim being so unseasoned in all things romantic, she yields to Lisa’s impulsive behavior under the belief she actually wants what is best for her. However, the girls’ nascent friendship is ostensibly axed once Lisa’s ulterior motive comes to light. Mending things is more of a challenge now, seeing as the two teens have no apparent obligations to one another. The path to young friendship here is certainly less simple than others, but in the end, Kim and Lisa’s reunion is a whole lot more rewarding to watch because of the obstacles involved.
This version of I Saw What You Did plays out like a long dream. The music in particular implies a surreal quality and serves as a constant reminder of how bizarre this story truly is. The film opens with Adrian’s dreadful video reel set to “Mr. Sandman”. A highly synthesized and haunting theme composed by Fred Walton’s associate Kaproff’s Fund is regularly heard, keeping viewers trapped in this bad dream. The increasingly uneasy events of this awful night finally culminate in a frightful ending that can only be the work of someone’s worst nightmare.
Fred Walton’s talent for creating suspense only got better with time. His mastery of slow-building terror along with the sharp screenplay make for a considerable reimagining of a notable yet uneven film. Fans of classic phone terror are strongly advised to take this call.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman dives headfirst into that angle of Bruce’s world. Sure, it’s about Riddler terrorizing Gotham City’s corrupt hierarchy, but it also explores the psyche of a young man living in his own personal hell. While filled with scary movie imagery and homages to the genre, The Batman soars when it examines the horror of living with post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).
Calling Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne “emo” is reductive and misses the point. His Bruce spends most of his time as Batman, lives in the Batcave, and flinches at the mere sight of his parents because he’s in pain. Exploring grief and trauma is a recent trend in horror. And after the last several years on this blue ball, who can blame them? What puts The Batman on the same level as Hereditary, Halloween (2018), or Doctor Sleep is its commitment to allowing the main character to wallow. Bruce loses his parents when he’s in elementary school. Making matters worse, he partially blames himself for their deaths. Why would he want to wake up every day and be “the prince of the city”? At that point, being Bruce Wayne at all is hard enough, let alone being that specific version. We learn his parents died 20 years before the film’s events, but Bruce relives that moment he’s on patrol every night. His pain makes an early moment in the story one of its most poignant and touching.
On their way out of a crime scene, lieutenant Gordon tells Batman the mayor’s son found his father’s dead body wrapped in tape. Batman comes to a complete stop when he sees the boy in his room as cops pepper him with questions. This is a man who gets it. He knows what the kid is feeling and what the kid will feel. They’re a part of the same awful club, only there are no cool jackets or membership dues. Only a lot of anger and even more tears as a barrier to entry. At that moment, at least one other person in the room relates to that kid’s personal scary movie. Horror movies usually show us groups of people dealing with their own big bad wolves outside the door. Yes, there’s strength in numbers, but there are also perks to having a support system. However, The Batman illustrates how lonely it is recovering from the kind of trauma Bruce and the mayor’s son suffered.
Horror often deals with external forces dragging us into a ring of hades or creating a monster to manifest our internal anxieties. But what if we are the monster? Those on this side of the screen don’t have Michael Myers or a Babadook as approximations. For us, we are our worst enemies while grieving. And so is Bruce. The Batman tells us Bruce is a creature of the night nonstop because it channels his rage. “I’m vengeance” isn’t just a cute quote for t-shirts; they’re the words of a young man working through many issues. Carrying a burden that heavy for so long extracts a heavy psychological toll. One not measured in dollars or cents but drops of humanity. That’s why Bruce lashes out at Alfred at certain moments in the movie or seemingly cares very little for Selina Kyle’s situation or well-being. He scoffs at Alfred’s “parental” instincts and sees Selina as nothing more than a means to an end because tearing down his emotional walls makes him vulnerable to hurt.
It’s hard opening to any type of emotional pain after losing anyone, let alone parents. At that point, there are two horrors from which to choose: isolation or heartbreak. Neither is particularly pleasant, but at least the former is within one’s control. That compulsion Bruce has in The Batman to detect, investigate, and see all the angles? That’s not just the sign of someone aiming for the “World’s Greatest Detective” crown. Those are hallmarks of someone living through trauma and doing everything in their power to control every situation. Which, to most people, sounds crazy. How can anyone possibly have a handle on everything life throws their way? After suffering such a horrific loss, that type of logic bears no meaning. The goal is to ensure life never catches you off guard like that ever again.
Imagine waking up every day hoping the worst thing to ever happen to you is a nightmare. Imagine waking up every day realizing your dreams are often better than your reality. Eat your heart out, Alanis Morissette. Bruce never gives himself the time, or the permission, to get out of that space. He owns property in a state of mind where every reminder hurts, every memory cuts, and no one helps because they’re not allowed to even try.
As Batman, Bruce exposes that very raw nerve every night and channels it into rage or dogmatic dedication to his chosen crimefighting craft. But by the final credits, he realizes one horror begets another. Batman cannot make an actual difference in Gotham until Bruce Wayne allows his scars to heal. Or, at the least, applies ointment and a few bandages to help the healing process. Unlike most horror movies, The Batman states the protagonist cannot continue the cycle of violence while providing him an actual moment of clarity. Major trauma takes time to process, and while no one with two eyes and a brain can say Bruce is truly healed at the end of the movie, he is better. That’s a victory because the man who spends his nights fighting monsters has one less internal one to battle.

Horror movies usually show us groups of people dealing with their own big bad wolves outside the door. Yes, there’s strength in numbers, but there are also perks to having a support system. However, The Batman illustrates how lonely it is recovering from the kind of trauma Bruce and the mayor’s son suffered.
Horror often deals with external forces dragging us into a ring of hades or creating a monster to manifest our internal anxieties. But what if we are the monster? Those on this side of the screen don’t have Michael Myers or a Babadook as approximations. For us, we are our worst enemies while grieving. And so is Bruce. The Batman tells us Bruce is a creature of the night nonstop because it channels his rage. “I’m vengeance” isn’t just a cute quote for t-shirts; they’re the words of a young man working through many issues. Carrying a burden that heavy for so long extracts a heavy psychological toll. One not measured in dollars or cents but drops of humanity. That’s why Bruce lashes out at Alfred at certain moments in the movie or seemingly cares very little for Selina Kyle’s situation or well-being. He scoffs at Alfred’s “parental” instincts and sees Selina as nothing more than a means to an end because tearing down his emotional walls makes him vulnerable to hurt.
It’s hard opening to any type of emotional pain after losing anyone, let alone parents. At that point, there are two horrors from which to choose: isolation or heartbreak. Neither is particularly pleasant, but at least the former is within one’s control. That compulsion Bruce has in The Batman to detect, investigate, and see all the angles? That’s not just the sign of someone aiming for the “World’s Greatest Detective” crown. Those are hallmarks of someone living through trauma and doing everything in their power to control every situation. Which, to most people, sounds crazy. How can anyone possibly have a handle on everything life throws their way? After suffering such a horrific loss, that type of logic bears no meaning. The goal is to ensure life never catches you off guard like that ever again.
Imagine waking up every day hoping the worst thing to ever happen to you is a nightmare. Imagine waking up every day realizing your dreams are often better than your reality. Eat your heart out, Alanis Morissette. Bruce never gives himself the time, or the permission, to get out of that space. He owns property in a state of mind where every reminder hurts, every memory cuts, and no one helps because they’re not allowed to even try.
As Batman, Bruce exposes that very raw nerve every night and channels it into rage or dogmatic dedication to his chosen crimefighting craft. But by the final credits, he realizes one horror begets another. Batman cannot make an actual difference in Gotham until Bruce Wayne allows his scars to heal. Or, at the least, applies ointment and a few bandages to help the healing process. Unlike most horror movies, The Batman states the protagonist cannot continue the cycle of violence while providing him an actual moment of clarity. Major trauma takes time to process, and while no one with two eyes and a brain can say Bruce is truly healed at the end of the movie, he is better. That’s a victory because the man who spends his nights fighting monsters has one less internal one to battle.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman dives headfirst into that angle of Bruce’s world. Sure, it’s about Riddler terrorizing Gotham City’s corrupt hierarchy, but it also explores the psyche of a young man living in his own personal hell. While filled with scary movie imagery and homages to the genre, The Batman soars when it examines the horror of living with post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).
Calling Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne “emo” is reductive and misses the point. His Bruce spends most of his time as Batman, lives in the Batcave, and flinches at the mere sight of his parents because he’s in pain. Exploring grief and trauma is a recent trend in horror. And after the last several years on this blue ball, who can blame them? What puts The Batman on the same level as Hereditary, Halloween (2018), or Doctor Sleep is its commitment to allowing the main character to wallow. Bruce loses his parents when he’s in elementary school. Making matters worse, he partially blames himself for their deaths. Why would he want to wake up every day and be “the prince of the city”? At that point, being Bruce Wayne at all is hard enough, let alone being that specific version. We learn his parents died 20 years before the film’s events, but Bruce relives that moment he’s on patrol every night. His pain makes an early moment in the story one of its most poignant and touching.
On their way out of a crime scene, lieutenant Gordon tells Batman the mayor’s son found his father’s dead body wrapped in tape. Batman comes to a complete stop when he sees the boy in his room as cops pepper him with questions. This is a man who gets it. He knows what the kid is feeling and what the kid will feel. For those who don’t know, I’m a big fan of video game movies and TV shows based on them.
As someone who has played video games for a good portion of her life, from story-driven masterpieces to action RPG’s, I’ve seen possibly every video game movie under the sun just for the sake of my connection to these games. I freaked out when I heard The Last Of Us, one of my favorite story-driven games with horror aspects, was getting an HBO adaptationand I’m still counting down the days until I get to see the first trailer.
But, that got me thinking – there are so many other great horror games – those driven by their scariness, and those with amazing horror aspects with a great story – that deserve their own movie. While Resident Evil is the obvious horror game that exploded onto the movie screens, none of those movies have ever really been, well, good.
Now, there are so many other modern horror video games that deserve the spotlight. Here are seven choices that I personally feel would make for a great movie.

Little Nightmares
When I first played Little Nightmares it was a freaking trip. The way in which the game is played gives you a different kind of perspective as the protagonist, as you play a little girl, named Six, who must escape the Maw, a place occupied by monsters that are all trying to kill her. It’s so brilliantly told and well-done.
Little Nightmares isn’t even that scary of a horror game, in my opinion. I’m more focused on the brilliant gameplay. At the same time, those scary aspects would make for a great horror film, or, at the very least, something that feels relatively close to the stop-motion animated film, Coraline – where it’s not directly called a horror film, but has plenty of great horror themes in it.
I just feel like so many people would come to love Six as a character in a film, and the creative team could do an excellent job with the makeup. There apparently was a TV show in development based on the game from the Russo Brothers, according to The Hollywood Reporterbut nothing has come from that in years. I demand to see a movie, dang it.

Dead By Daylight
This is such a freaking cool concept. Dead By Daylight takes five players and makes one of them the killer, and the other four have to try and somehow outsmart the killer in order to survive the night and not be killed, with them playing in the third-person.
Literally think of any classic slasher horror film you can, like the Friday the 13th franchise or the Halloween franchise. This is what a Dead by Daylight film could be – just four kids trying to survive a murderous killer. Have we seen this before in horror? Of course we have. There’s really not much you can do to revitalize the slasher genre except make things bloodier.
But, what really makes Dead by Daylight such an interesting game is that the killer is picked at random, so maybe they could somehow incorporate that into the movie. It could be someone you least expect. That would make for a great twist. While this game has actually been adapted into a board game, it’s time for a movie.

Left 4 Dead
I present to you, the first zombie game I ever played.
God, the hours I spent playing this with my brother or with people online are endless, uniting into a four-person team to take on endless hordes of zombies, from giant ones that would explode to ones that would scream. It was truly a horrifying experience – and paved the way for my love of zombie films and shows like All Of Us Are Dead or The Walking Dead.
Which is why this one should be quite obvious. Zombie films can be quite realistic and are usually a hit, whether it’s something like Army of the Dead, or World War Zand the world of Left 4 Dead has some really interesting zombies that are really creatively done and would be so much fun to bring to life on the big screen. I love zombie movies, and this would make an excellent one about a group of survivors just trying to make it through the night.

Outlast
Outlast has to be one of the few horror games over the last decade that has truly scared my desensitized mind. I genuinely had nightmares from playing this game – which is why it would be the perfect horror film.
In Outlast, you, in first-person mode, are a freelance journalist working as an investigator who is looking into a remote, abandoned psychiatric hospital with only the light of a camera as your way to see. However, as monsters and horrible people start to pop up, it’s up to you to try and survive the assignment.
I mean, not that long ago, we were living in an era of found footage horror, and while some of them were…ah, less than great (like The Amityville Haunting), other found footage horror movies have been fantastic, like Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project. An Outlast film could be the chance to maybe bring that genre back – and possibly make it better than ever before.

Until Dawn
Okay, so this would be really hard to do, but I believe that it’s possible.
In Until Dawn, a group of teenagers are up at a cabin that ends up with them, at first, getting hunted down by a supposed serial killer. In the end, it turns out to be Wendigos, evil creatures, and one of them happens to be a former friend of theirs – someone who died in a blizzard.
The thing with Until Dawn is that it’s a decision-based game, which means you’re given a series of questions and you have to answer them, and with that answer, it will affect the outcome of the game. That would be incredibly hard to do in a movie, which is why I was thinking it could either be one storyline that most game players have gotten, or (and I prefer this option) the people could pull a Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and make it a “choose your own ending” movie.
This game truly does get scary, especially with how these monsters react to killings and there being other types of weapons, and you start to genuinely care for the characters, which is why I believe it would be perfect for a horror film. But, it would take some time to get that story just right.

Dark Souls
Okay, okay, hear me out.
While I know that the Dark Souls series isn’t necessarily a horror-based video game and is mainly an action role-playing game, there are many horror aspects to this game that I think would make a really good horror movie. Some of those bosses have truly terrified me in the past and I swear, I’ve literally skipped over optional bosses because I straight-up hate how they look – and not in a “oh, that design is bad” way. More like “that monster is freaking terrifying.”
I’m thinking more of a horror-fantasylike Pan’s Labyrinth or something like that for this adaptation. It could be fantastically well-done and would certainly have a devoted fan-base for it.

Last but not least, we have Dead Space. This science-fiction horror game tells the story of an engineer who goes on a mission to repair a mining ship in deep-space that suddenly turns off after it finds a weird artifact on another planet. When he gets there, he finds everyone on the ship dead – and he’ll be next if he doesn’t beat the alien that is hunting him down.
There are so many sci-fi horror films. Literally one of the best known horror films of all time is Alien. Dead Space could be the next best one. With its interesting storytelling, brilliant combat and super scary freaking aliens, Dead Space would be a hit.
While there did seem to be an adaptation in the works a long time ago (according to Electronic Arts reps at Comic-Con, via Giant Freakin’ Robot) there has not been any news of an update for this movie in nearly a decade. Honestly, there really should be because it would be fantastic.
Horror films have truly become even more creative and tell amazing stories, and I know that some of these games would give way to some really cool horror movies that we would all love. Studios just have to give them the chance to shine.

As someone who has played video games for a good portion of her life, from story-driven masterpieces to action RPG’s, I’ve seen possibly every video game movie under the sun just for the sake of my connection to these games. Carrie – Prime Video
Poor Carrie White. Having a broken woman turned fanatical religious zealot for a mother resulted in a profoundly sheltered upbringing that couldn’t prepare this teen for the cruelty of high school. Bullied at home and school, Carrie’s burgeoning telekinetic powers finally gave her the strength to find her voice. That was before she was pushed too far. Carrie White transitioned from an empathetic teen to the monster in her own story with the wrathful annihilation of those attending her high school prom. Eleven spent all of her power in the Battle of Starcourt last season, which spells good news for her new high school bullies at the beginning of the new season. Because Carrie showcases that hell hath no fury like a telekinetic teenager scorned.
Shakma – Shudder, Tubi
Professor Sorenson (Roddy McDowall) organizes a live-action role-playing game on campus for his medical students. They gather, unaware that a test baboon, Shakma, has gone berserk thanks to an experimental drug that induces hyper aggression. It’s on the rampage, prompting a perilous fight for survival. While the Hellfire Dungeons & Dragons Club for Hawkins High School won’t have to contend with raging animals, they will have to deal with intense scenarios caused by Satanic Panic and the Upside Down.
We Summon the Darkness – Netflix
“Stranger Things 4” will see a Hawkins stricken with Satanic Panic, a mania that also fuels this irreverent, 80s-set horror comedy. It sees a trio of friends invite a trio of guys they met at a heavy metal concert to their country home for an after-party. With the area plagued by Satanically inspired murders, the after-party turns into a fight for survival. We Summon the Darkness doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does offer a highly entertaining horror-comedy in large part due to Alexandra Daddario and Maddie Hasson having a ball with their characters. Heavy metal is both the target and lure for Satanic Panic here.
IT (2017) – HBO Max

Poor Carrie White. Having a broken woman turned fanatical religious zealot for a mother resulted in a profoundly sheltered upbringing that couldn’t prepare this teen for the cruelty of high school. Bullied at home and school, Carrie’s burgeoning telekinetic powers finally gave her the strength to find her voice. That was before she was pushed too far. Carrie White transitioned from an empathetic teen to the monster in her own story with the wrathful annihilation of those attending her high school prom. Eleven spent all of her power in the Battle of Starcourt last season, which spells good news for her new high school bullies at the beginning of the new season. Because Carrie showcases that hell hath no fury like a telekinetic teenager scorned.
Shakma – Shudder, Tubi
Professor Sorenson (Roddy McDowall) organizes a live-action role-playing game on campus for his medical students. They gather, unaware that a test baboon, Shakma, has gone berserk thanks to an experimental drug that induces hyper aggression. It’s on the rampage, prompting a perilous fight for survival. While the Hellfire Dungeons & Dragons Club for Hawkins High School won’t have to contend with raging animals, they will have to deal with intense scenarios caused by Satanic Panic and the Upside Down.
We Summon the Darkness – Netflix
“Stranger Things 4” will see a Hawkins stricken with Satanic Panic, a mania that also fuels this irreverent, 80s-set horror comedy. It sees a trio of friends invite a trio of guys they met at a heavy metal concert to their country home for an after-party. With the area plagued by Satanically inspired murders, the after-party turns into a fight for survival. We Summon the Darkness doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does offer a highly entertaining horror-comedy in large part due to Alexandra Daddario and Maddie Hasson having a ball with their characters. Heavy metal is both the target and lure for Satanic Panic here.

The following stories from TV anthologies call attention to adolescent frights. Be it nocturnal monsters beyond adults’ understanding, or other dreadful things that go bump in the night, these episodes are the stuff of childhood nightmares.
Tales From the Darkside (1983-1988) Ursa Minor
Monsters were not all that common in Tales From the Darksideseeing as most episodes were about life’s less tangible threats. Yet, even with an angry bear running around, “Ursa Minor” never turns into a full-blown creature-feature. This story ends up having more in common with the series’ other eerie tales of human conflict.
This episode follows a seemingly normal family of three. That illusion of function quickly fades away after young Susie (Jamie Ohar) receives a stuffed bear named Teddy on her birthday. Meanwhile, parents Joan and Richard (Marilyn Jones, Carhart Team) bicker a lot because of financial issues and the fact that Susie’s father is an alcoholic. The tension only worsens when peculiar incidents occur around the house; objects mysteriously break as well as tiny animal footprints appear on the wall.
Like clockwork in these stories, the child swears her new toy is responsible for the damage. Joan initially does not believe her daughter, but when things get too out of hand at home, she consults a magic expert. He indulges Susie’s claim, and he points out how a small bear like Teddy, an Ursa Minor, seeks to destroy humans’ complacency. This episode goes on to provide an interesting mythos for these once powerful animals that have since been reduced to the likes of “Smokey, Pooh, and little Teddy.”
Viewers expect to see Teddy eventually attack the family out in the open, but the toy does more harm hiding in the shadows. Like the scholar said earlier, entities such as Teddy want to upset the balance and remove people’s comfort. The state of Susie’s home has not been good for long time — Joan herself said she cannot stand this “polite poverty” — and truth be told, this family’s downfall was inevitable with or without Teddy around.
The Twilight Zone (1985-1989) The Shadow Man
Director Joe Dante and screenwriter Rockne S. O’Bannon (Amazing Stories) collaborated on one of the better episodes of the ’80s Twilight Zone. “The Shadow Man” centers on a teenager named Danny (Jonathan Ward), whose crush on a classmate leads him to making poor decisions.
Danny soon discovers he has a roommate; living under his bed is the episode’s namesake. Despite its ominous appearance — the all-black being resembles a man in a long coat and a hat — the Shadow Man says he will “never harm the person under whose bed” he lives. Every night, the entity leaves the house and carries on, doing who knows what, until he slips back in before morning. Soon, Danny’s classmates become victims to an attacker who sounds a lot like the Shadow Man.
Danny’s fears of the Shadow Man go away once he realizes he has immunity. As everyone else hides after sundown, Danny stays out so he can see his crush. This brings him a sudden burst of popularity, not to mention a new streak of arrogance. Danny foolishly thinks he can then use the Shadow Man for his own bidding when a bully picks on him.
“The Shadow Man” is a high point for the first revival of The Twilight Zone. The morality lesson within is not too thought-provoking or unique, but the events of the episode make up for that. This simple yet devilish tale captures children’s anxiety about bedtime monsters.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990-2000) The Tale of the Quicksilver
Kiki’s most memorable submission during her time with The Midnight Society is without a doubt “The Tale of the Quicksilver“. The mere image of the cloaked specter evokes childhood nightmares of yesteryear. In this iconic episode of the original Are You Afraid of the Dark series, two is a significant number; twin sisters, two brothers, second chances, and a pair of unalike spirits all make for a haunting story.
Tatyana Ali pulls double duty as twins Laura and Connie, although their sisterhood is not revealed until later. In a chilling flashback, Laura dies after failing to wrangle the malevolent phantom hiding in her bedroom walls. In the present day, a new family has since moved into the house where Laura mysteriously died in a fire. Brothers Aaron and Dougie (Kyle Alisharan, Stuart Stone) are then menaced by the same otherworldly threat, and the only way to stop history from repeating itself is asking Connie to finish what Laura started.
Even hardened adults can agree this Are You Afraid of the Dark episode has some effective scares. The bad spirit’s gaunt makeup and a tatty cloak go a long way, as do the lighting and editing. The Creature of Darkness comes off as one of the most imposing monsters in the whole series.
Beneath the physical frights lies a stirring ghost story. Alisharan — whose real-life brother played fellow Midnight Society member Frank — and Ali deliver solid performances, with the latter especially manifesting her character’s remorse. The sentimentality adds to an already remarkable episode.
Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction (1997-2002) Kid In the Closet
Children with an overwhelming fear of the dark can attest to closets being one of the most dreaded places in their bedroom. Windows can at least provide a modicum of natural light until dawn breaks, but all bets are off once a child is sealed inside a shut closet.
No segment in Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction stays as glued in people’s heads as “Kid in the Closet.” The interactive anthology only sometimes dabbled in overt horror, but when it did, the result was often horrifying. In only its second episode ever, the series suggested a creature was inhabiting young Danny’s (Jordan Warkol) closet. He spends most of his nights on the couch, but eventually his mother insists he conquer his fear and sleep in his room. One thing leads to another, and Danny’s jerk of a brother goes missing when he enters the fearsome closet, all in a bid to embarrass Danny in front of their peers. However, the joke is on him because he is never seen again.
The adults in these horror narratives tend to forget what it was like to be a kid. They do not necessarily summon these monsters, but they do end up making them stronger, one way or another. Danny’s mother is convinced this closet phobia is all a phase for her son, all the while ignoring her other son Brian’s (Colin MacDonald) abusive behavior toward Danny. She even asks in the opening narration, “Could I have done something to change things?”
The show claims this yarn is based on fact, yet a fan’s research concludes things happened much differently in the real-life basis. A boy really did “vanish” inside a closet; he did so by slipping out of a hole, then hiding out in a friend’s attic for a few weeks. So, much like a child with an overactive imagination, this Beyond Belief story gets carried away with the truth.
Just Beyond (2022) My Monster
R.L. Stine‘s series of books Just Beyond inspired the newer Disney+ anthology of the same name. This is more of an “in name only” deal since very little of the source material wound up in the show itself. For instance, “My Monster” appears to be an original story.
After her parents’ separation, Olivia (Megan Stott) moves into her mother’s childhood home. She swears she is fine with both the divorce and the move, but as time goes by, it becomes clear she is far from okay. Making friends at school comes easy enough; not only is she immediately invited to a group hangout, Olivia is on the fast track to joining the cheerleading squad. Unfortunately, something is holding her back. When she least suspects it, a sinister creature only Olivia can see comes out of nowhere.
“My Monster” easily could have gone down the route of something more hoary, but the creators do the opposite. They also shirk subtlety and say the quiet parts out loud. While making the undertone explicit may sound like a lack of creativity, the execution is clever. And best of all, the scares, albeit juvenile ones, are not sacrificed to tell an important message.
Much like The Babadookthe monster here is a metaphor for internal issues. That movie is too heavy for the younger set, but Just Beyond ably puts the same big ideas in child-friendly terms. Adults certainly can get something out “My Monster” as well.

Rewatching any genre of movie from the 2000s is always going to be an interesting experience. Of course, hair and clothing styles have changed a lot, so those things will stick out right away. When horror fans revisit films from this time period, some stories that were originally scary don’t measure up anymore, and sometimes, plot twists fall flat and characters seem boring.
From the sequel to the beloved The Blair Witch Project to a few remakes of classic films, there are several horror movies from the 2000s that haven’t aged all that well. Fans of the genre can definitely skip them when going through films from this decade.

While the Blair Witch Project‘s monster is scary and at least makes the original film creepy, the sequel doesn’t hold up, mostly because it feels like a repeat experience of the first film.
This time around, the main characters are fans of The Blair Witch Project movie and the legend of the supernatural presence in the woods. They travel to Black Hills and want to see for themselves if this is real or not. When contemporary horror audiences watch this sequel, it doesn’t feel as unsettling as it should. There are many more paranormal horror films that are worth watching. Since The Blair Witch Project doesn’t feel all that creepy when viewed today, since the shock of it is gone, it’s easy to say that the sequel doesn’t pack much of a punch, either.
While Tony Shalhoub is a great actor, the 2001 remake of the 1960 movie Thirteen Ghosts doesn’t hold up well today. Shalhoub’s character Arthur Kritocs moves into a mansion with his kids Bobby (Alec Roberts) and Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth) and, of course, the place is haunted.
The movie has a funny ending with the nanny Maggie (Rah Digga) saying that she’s leaving her position, as this has been too much of an ordeal. But besides this, the movie doesn’t offer modern audiences all that much. It’s full of cliches found in haunted house movies and doesn’t stand out among this subgenre. While it was awful watching Judy Greer’s character Karen Nelson die in Halloween Killsit was even worse seeing Michael Myers kill Jamie Lee Curtis’s classic final girl Laurie Strode in Halloween: Resurrection. Laurie is in a psychiatric hospital and Michael finds her and finally ends her life.
Although this film was disappointing at the time, as horror fans never want to see Laurie die, it’s even worse watching it today, especially when compared to the new trilogy. Fans want to see Laurie in a strong position where she’s completely in control, and any Halloween movie that wastes Laurie is going to be a problem. It’s much better to stick to the 1978 film since Laurie is at her best there, fighting against Michael and believing that she can get through this evening.

Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) is a psychiatrist and when people believe that she murdered her husband, she is locked up. The idea of a woman being “nuts” and needing to stay in a mental hospital is a difficult horror and thriller movie trope that fans would like to see gone.
It’s impossible to watch this film and think that the story’s events make sense, as Miranda is treated so badly and no one believes anything that she says. Watching this character struggle and suffer is upsetting and the movie isn’t scary or interesting. It’s hard not to focus on how poorly Miranda is treated and how unfair this is.
While original When A Stranger Calls is a good horror movie about babysitters, the 2006 remake is nothing like it. While it might have been fun to watch when it was released, since it has many hallmarks of cheesy 2000s horror movies, the story feels really dull now.

Rewatching any genre of movie from the 2000s is always going to be an interesting experience. Of course, hair and clothing styles have changed a lot, so those things will stick out right away. When horror fans revisit films from this time period, some stories that were originally scary don’t measure up anymore, and sometimes, plot twists fall flat and characters seem boring.
From the sequel to the beloved The Blair Witch Project to a few remakes of classic films, there are several horror movies from the 2000s that haven’t aged all that well. Fans of the genre can definitely skip them when going through films from this decade.

While the Blair Witch Project‘s monster is scary and at least makes the original film creepy, the sequel doesn’t hold up, mostly because it feels like a repeat experience of the first film.
This time around, the main characters are fans of The Blair Witch Project movie and the legend of the supernatural presence in the woods. They travel to Black Hills and want to see for themselves if this is real or not. When contemporary horror audiences watch this sequel, it doesn’t feel as unsettling as it should. There are many more paranormal horror films that are worth watching. Since The Blair Witch Project doesn’t feel all that creepy when viewed today, since the shock of it is gone, it’s easy to say that the sequel doesn’t pack much of a punch, either.
While Tony Shalhoub is a great actor, the 2001 remake of the 1960 movie Thirteen Ghosts doesn’t hold up well today. Shalhoub’s character Arthur Kritocs moves into a mansion with his kids Bobby (Alec Roberts) and Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth) and, of course, the place is haunted.
The movie has a funny ending with the nanny Maggie (Rah Digga) saying that she’s leaving her position, as this has been too much of an ordeal. But besides this, the movie doesn’t offer modern audiences all that much. It’s full of cliches found in haunted house movies and doesn’t stand out among this subgenre. Saber Interactive’s Evil Dead:The Game unites many characters from the Evil Dead universe, specifically the first three movies and the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” TV series. The game focuses on the franchise survivors as they gather loot from caches scattered on the game map and complete objectives before taking on the Deadites.
Evil Dead: The Game categorizes its survivors in four distinct classes of combat, taking their personalities and strengths into consideration in their attributes and special abilities. The game offers nine playable characters from the universe, spread among Leaders, Warriors, Hunters, and Support from the outset.
Then there’s the tricky and oft frustrating solo missions, four of which unlock more characters from the Evil Dead universe. If you’ve completed all five solo missions, you’ll notice a remaining Survivor slot available for Leaders, Warriors, and Support. It naturally elicited the question as to which Evil Dead franchise players could fill those slots in future DLC updates.
While we’re already pumped to battle Deadites at Castle Kandar in the future, here are six Evil Dead franchise characters we’d love to play as in the video game down the road.

Jake – Evil Dead II
Played by the late Danny Hicks, the owner of Jake’s Gas ‘n Go (a location seen in the game!) from Evil Dead II would fit right into the video game realm. Jake never hesitates when it comes to taking action. He guides Annie Knowby straight to the Knowby cabin and immediately incapacitates an understandably trigger-happy Ash. Jake’s all muscle, no strategy, with decent survivor instincts. While he may not have survived his encounter with the Deadites, he was far from the first to perish. Jake would be right at home alongside fellow Warriors.
Sheila – Army of Darkness
Fellow Army of Darkness characters Lord Arthur and Henry the Red already exist within the game, and their medieval stomping grounds will soon offer players a new map to explore. So, Ash’s love interest seems like a prime candidate to appear as a playable candidate. While not much of a fighter and prone to possession, Sheila does demonstrate a supportive nature that would make her a perfect addition to the Support class.
Blacksmith – Army of Darkness
Castle Kandar’s resident Blacksmith created the weapons and armor used by Lord Arthur and his knights. If you’ve unlocked Arthur in Mission 5 or at least played far enough to retrieve his legendary sword, you’d know what a valuable weapon this is during combat. Blacksmith is as tough as his weaponry and first to volunteer to aid Ash in the fight against the enemy. That opens up exciting possibilities in-game.
Brandy Barr Williams – “Ash vs. Evil Dead”
Like father, like daughter. Brandy gets introduced in the third season of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” as a high school student utterly oblivious to the world of demons. Nor is she aware of Ash Williams, her father. Despite her initial fear, skepticism, and outright denial, Brandy adjusts rather quickly, becoming an asset to the team. Brandy also exhibits many of Ash’s traits, including a demonic hand injury. While “Ash vs. Evil Dead” didn’t make it past season three, Brandy’s journey seemed headed toward leadership, giving her Leader potential.
Brock Williams – “Ash vs Evil Dead”
Ash’s far more unfiltered and obnoxious dad makes it abundantly clear where Ash gets his personality. While abrasive and crass, Brock loves his children fiercely; he still mourns over his daughter Cheryl and harbors a mean grudge against Ash for abandoning him decades ago. That he’s very fond of guns means he could make for a good Hunter, though the class is already heavily stacked. Evil Dead: The Game rewards teams who fill their roster with all iterations of Ash with a “Four Horseman” trophy. If your group plays as characters chosen by specific movies – all Army of Darkness players, for example – you get trophies for that as well. Maybe a Williams family trophy is in order?
Ruby – “Ash vs Evil Dead”
The series’ on and off again central antagonist had quite the arc over the three seasons. First introduced as “Ruby Knowby,” the Dark One and Necronomicon author acted as Annie Knowby’s sister to manipulate Amanda Fisher into helping her track down Ash Williams. When Ruby’s demonic spawn turns against her in season two, she becomes an unwitting anti-hero and valuable ally to Ash’s team. Alternate timeline versions of Ruby ultimate replaced Good Ruby with a 1982 version that’d never met Ash, therefore still evil. Ruby’s power and her potential to shift back and forth between teams make her one of the most exciting options to add to the game. Ruby could exist as a Demon or a Survivor, giving multiple character iterations to test out in combat.

From fantasy classics like The Princess Bride and Star Wars to more recent efforts like How To Train Your Dragon and the Harry Potter franchise, the genre is full of great movies that can be watched with the family. Whilst a PG certificate limits how far a movie can go in certain aspects, many of these films contain genuine thrills and some clever humor that make them enjoyable to adults as well as a younger audience.

10 Night At The Museum (2006)
Fantasy blends well with comedy in this 2006 movie that starred Ben Stiller as the hapless new security guard at the Museum of Natural History. As it turns out, of course, this museum’s exhibits have a habit of coming to life after sunset which adds a whole world of new difficulties for the character.

Also starring Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and a whole host of historic figures, Night at the Museum is a charming fantasy caper. Not all of the sequences land but everything is delivered with the perfect sense of humor and levity to still be enjoyable and the movie ultimately sticks the landing.
9 How To Train Your Dragon (2010)
Ever since the release of How to Train Your Dragon in 2010, the franchise has been one of Dreamworks’ most successful and it’s easy to see why. Like so many of the best family-friendly fantasy movies, How to Train Your Dragon is based on a beloved series of children’s books of the same name.
With excellent 3D animation and a star-studded voice cast that includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and Kristen Wiig, the movie was always destined to be a success. On top of that, the movie has some emotional moments that are well executed and help to make the movie that much more memorable.
8 Beetlejuice (1988)
Even when Tim Burton makes films suitable for a younger audience, he still manages to get across his twisted imagination and dark sense of humor. Beetlejuice, the story of a recently deceased couple who enlist the help of the iconic Betelgeuse to help haunt their house’s new inhabits, is the perfect example of this.
Beetlejuice has some sly adult references and some light moments of horror but in many ways, this helps make the fantasy comedy the perfect PG film. With the success of the stage adaptation as well as a very late sequel movie in the works, now is the perfect time to revisit one of Tim Burton’s classics
7 Hook (1991)
Directed by a master of family-friendly fantasy in the form of Stephen Spielberg, Hook stars Dustin Hoffman as the infamous pirate captain and Robin Williams as the jaded adult Peter Pan who must return to Neverland to rediscover his past self. With such big names featured and John Williams providing the score, it’s no surprise that many remember the movie fondly.
Before Pirates of the Caribbean, Hook was the swashbuckling pirate adventure movie that never took itself too seriously. Still one of the best pirate movies, Hook‘s crowd-pleasing approach and simple heartwarming message mean that anyone can enjoy the Peter Pan-inspired adventure.
6 The Lord Of The Rings (1978)
Not to be confused with the PG-13 rated Peter Jackson adaptation, Ralph Bakshi’s animated fantasy epic brought to life the first of Tolkien’s novels all the way back in 1978. Starring the late John Hurt as Aragorn, as well as Anthony Daniels, the actor best known for playing C3PO, as Legolas, the movie was a charismatic attempt to adapt the lengthy novel.

In some ways, the movie is even more faithful to the novels than its more recent counterpart as it’s focused less on blockbusting action. The only downside of Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings is that as it lacks any sequels, the experience may feel a bit incomplete compared to Jackson’s comprehensive trilogy.
5 Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004)
The third movie in the Harry Potter series and the first to be directed by Alfonso Cuarón, whose slightly darker vision for the movies didn’t affect this installment’s accessible PG status, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a fan favorite for many. Introducing an escaped murderer, a mysterious new teacher, and terrifying Dementors that haunt Hogwarts, the movie does contain some scary moments.
However, the charming sense of wonder that made the first two films beloved is still everpresent and it’s a big part of what makes the movie perfect for a younger audience and nostalgic for slightly older viewers. Also one of the more book-accurate Harry Potter movies, there’s plenty of reason to watch for readers too.
4 Jumanji (1995)
Although the movie series has continued into the 2010s in a completely unexpected way, there is a lot to love about the first Jumanji movie that introduced the supernatural board game. Throwing jungle-based chaos at the players at every turn, the main characters are forced to work together to beat the perilous game.
A talented cast of actors and some big-budget special effects, that haven’t aged quite as poorly as it would be easy to assume, complements the thrill ride and the movie has enough tricks up its sleeve to be consistently fun throughout. Even over 25 years on from its release, Jumanji has an appeal that might even place it above its modern counterparts.
3 Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets did an excellent job of continuing in the tone set by the first Harry Potter movie whilst lovingly adapting the book’s story. In Harry’s second year at the magical institute, the titular Chamber of Secrets is opened, unleashing a terrifying monster on the school.

As the last Harry Potter movie directed by Chris Columbus and the last to feature the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore, there is a sense of gentle charm present in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that the later Harry Potter movies, though enjoyable in their own way, lacked.
2 Star Wars (1977)
Even with the sequels, prequels, reboots, and television spin-offs, there is a magic that Star Wars: A New Hope has that makes it the perfect family adventure even today. At its heart, Star Wars is the simple story of a young farmhand who dreams of adventure in a galaxy under the thumb of an evil empire.
Achieving worldwide success and making stars of Luke Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, the original Star Wars is well worth watching even if the franchise may now seem daunting to get into. Now is actually the perfect time to see Alec Guinness’ mystical interpretation of Obi-Wan Kenobi before the new series drops on Disney Plus.

Even with new family-friendly fantasy adventures being released every year, The Princess Bride still remains the best to watch even today. An adaptation of the William Goldman novel of the same name and written by Goldman himself, the movie blends fairytale fantasy with comedy and romance in an incredibly enjoyable package.
Full of iconic characters that are still quoted frequently to this day, the presentation of the story as being read by an old man to his grandson only adds to the magical feel. Despite only receiving modest success upon its initial release, the movie is now rightfully considered a classic of the fantasy adventure genre.

From fantasy classics like The Princess Bride and Star Wars to more recent efforts like How To Train Your Dragon and the Harry Potter franchise, the genre is full of great movies that can be watched with the family. Whilst a PG certificate limits how far a movie can go in certain aspects, many of these films contain genuine thrills and some clever humor that make them enjoyable to adults as well as a younger audience.
Movie lovers of Ranker got together and voted on which PG-rated fantasy movies deserve to be considered the best of the bunch and these are the results.

10 Night At The Museum (2006)
Fantasy blends well with comedy in this 2006 movie that starred Ben Stiller as the hapless new security guard at the Museum of Natural History. As it turns out, of course, this museum’s exhibits have a habit of coming to life after sunset which adds a whole world of new difficulties for the character.

Also starring Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and a whole host of historic figures, Night at the Museum is a charming fantasy caper. Not all of the sequences land but everything is delivered with the perfect sense of humor and levity to still be enjoyable and the movie ultimately sticks the landing.
9 How To Train Your Dragon (2010)
Ever since the release of How to Train Your Dragon in 2010, the franchise has been one of Dreamworks’ most successful and it’s easy to see why. Like so many of the best family-friendly fantasy movies, How to Train Your Dragon is based on a beloved series of children’s books of the same name.
With excellent 3D animation and a star-studded voice cast that includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and Kristen Wiig, the movie was always destined to be a success. On top of that, the movie has some emotional moments that are well executed and help to make the movie that much more memorable.
8 Beetlejuice (1988)
Even when Tim Burton makes films suitable for a younger audience, he still manages to get across his twisted imagination and dark sense of humor. Beetlejuice, the story of a recently deceased couple who enlist the help of the iconic Betelgeuse to help haunt their house’s new inhabits, is the perfect example of this.
Beetlejuice has some sly adult references and some light moments of horror but in many ways, this helps make the fantasy comedy the perfect PG film. With the success of the stage adaptation as well as a very late sequel movie in the works, now is the perfect time to revisit one of Tim Burton’s classics
7 Hook (1991)
Directed by a master of family-friendly fantasy in the form of Stephen Spielberg, Hook stars Dustin Hoffman as the infamous pirate captain and Robin Williams as the jaded adult Peter Pan who must return to Neverland to rediscover his past self. With such big names featured and John Williams providing the score, it’s no surprise that many remember the movie fondly.
Before Pirates of the Caribbean, Hook was the swashbuckling pirate adventure movie that never took itself too seriously. Still one of the best pirate movies, Hook‘s crowd-pleasing approach and simple heartwarming message mean that anyone can enjoy the Peter Pan-inspired adventure.
6 The Lord Of The Rings (1978)
Not to be confused with the PG-13 rated Peter Jackson adaptation, Ralph Bakshi’s animated fantasy epic brought to life the first of Tolkien’s novels all the way back in 1978. Starring the late John Hurt as Aragorn, as well as Anthony Daniels, the actor best known for playing C3PO, as Legolas, the movie was a charismatic attempt to adapt the lengthy novel.

In some ways, the movie is even more faithful to the novels than its more recent counterpart as it’s focused less on blockbusting action. The only downside of Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings is that as it lacks any sequels, the experience may feel a bit incomplete compared to Jackson’s comprehensive trilogy.
5 Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004)
The third movie in the Harry Potter series and the first to be directed by Alfonso Cuarón, whose slightly darker vision for the movies didn’t affect this installment’s accessible PG status, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a fan favorite for many. Introducing an escaped murderer, a mysterious new teacher, and terrifying Dementors that haunt Hogwarts, the movie does contain some scary moments.
However, the charming sense of wonder that made the first two films beloved is still everpresent and it’s a big part of what makes the movie perfect for a younger audience and nostalgic for slightly older viewers. Also one of the more book-accurate Harry Potter movies, there’s plenty of reason to watch for readers too.
4 Jumanji (1995)
Although the movie series has continued into the 2010s in a completely unexpected way, there is a lot to love about the first Jumanji movie that introduced the supernatural board game. Throwing jungle-based chaos at the players at every turn, the main characters are forced to work together to beat the perilous game.
A talented cast of actors and some big-budget special effects, that haven’t aged quite as poorly as it would be easy to assume, complements the thrill ride and the movie has enough tricks up its sleeve to be consistently fun throughout. Even over 25 years on from its release, Jumanji has an appeal that might even place it above its modern counterparts.
3 Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets did an excellent job of continuing in the tone set by the first Harry Potter movie whilst lovingly adapting the book’s story. In Harry’s second year at the magical institute, the titular Chamber of Secrets is opened, unleashing a terrifying monster on the school.

As the last Harry Potter movie directed by Chris Columbus and the last to feature the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore, there is a sense of gentle charm present in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that the later Harry Potter movies, though enjoyable in their own way, lacked.
2 Star Wars (1977)
Even with the sequels, prequels, reboots, and television spin-offs, there is a magic that Star Wars: A New Hope has that makes it the perfect family adventure even today. At its heart, Star Wars is the simple story of a young farmhand who dreams of adventure in a galaxy under the thumb of an evil empire.
Achieving worldwide success and making stars of Luke Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, the original Star Wars is well worth watching even if the franchise may now seem daunting to get into. Now is actually the perfect time to see Alec Guinness’ mystical interpretation of Obi-Wan Kenobi before the new series drops on Disney Plus.

Even with new family-friendly fantasy adventures being released every year, The Princess Bride still remains the best to watch even today. An adaptation of the William Goldman novel of the same name and written by Goldman himself, the movie blends fairytale fantasy with comedy and romance in an incredibly enjoyable package.
Full of iconic characters that are still quoted frequently to this day, the presentation of the story as being read by an old man to his grandson only adds to the magical feel. Despite only receiving modest success upon its initial release, the movie is now rightfully considered a classic of the fantasy adventure genre.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman dives headfirst into that angle of Bruce’s world. Sure, it’s about Riddler terrorizing Gotham City’s corrupt hierarchy, but it also explores the psyche of a young man living in his own personal hell. While filled with scary movie imagery and homages to the genre, The Batman soars when it examines the horror of living with post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).
Calling Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne “emo” is reductive and misses the point. His Bruce spends most of his time as Batman, lives in the Batcave, and flinches at the mere sight of his parents because he’s in pain. Exploring grief and trauma is a recent trend in horror. And after the last several years on this blue ball, who can blame them? What puts The Batman on the same level as Hereditary, Halloween (2018), or Doctor Sleep is its commitment to allowing the main character to wallow. Bruce loses his parents when he’s in elementary school. Making matters worse, he partially blames himself for their deaths. Why would he want to wake up every day and be “the prince of the city”? At that point, being Bruce Wayne at all is hard enough, let alone being that specific version. We learn his parents died 20 years before the film’s events, but Bruce relives that moment he’s on patrol every night. His pain makes an early moment in the story one of its most poignant and touching.
On their way out of a crime scene, lieutenant Gordon tells Batman the mayor’s son found his father’s dead body wrapped in tape. Batman comes to a complete stop when he sees the boy in his room as cops pepper him with questions. This is a man who gets it. He knows what the kid is feeling and what the kid will feel. They’re a part of the same awful club, only there are no cool jackets or membership dues. Only a lot of anger and even more tears as a barrier to entry. At that moment, at least one other person in the room relates to that kid’s personal scary movie. Horror movies usually show us groups of people dealing with their own big bad wolves outside the door. Yes, there’s strength in numbers, but there are also perks to having a support system. However, The Batman illustrates how lonely it is recovering from the kind of trauma Bruce and the mayor’s son suffered.
Horror often deals with external forces dragging us into a ring of hades or creating a monster to manifest our internal anxieties. But what if we are the monster? Those on this side of the screen don’t have Michael Myers or a Babadook as approximations. For us, we are our worst enemies while grieving. And so is Bruce. The Batman tells us Bruce is a creature of the night nonstop because it channels his rage. “I’m vengeance” isn’t just a cute quote for t-shirts; they’re the words of a young man working through many issues. Carrying a burden that heavy for so long extracts a heavy psychological toll. One not measured in dollars or cents but drops of humanity. That’s why Bruce lashes out at Alfred at certain moments in the movie or seemingly cares very little for Selina Kyle’s situation or well-being. He scoffs at Alfred’s “parental” instincts and sees Selina as nothing more than a means to an end because tearing down his emotional walls makes him vulnerable to hurt.
It’s hard opening to any type of emotional pain after losing anyone, let alone parents. At that point, there are two horrors from which to choose: isolation or heartbreak. Neither is particularly pleasant, but at least the former is within one’s control. That compulsion Bruce has in The Batman to detect, investigate, and see all the angles? That’s not just the sign of someone aiming for the “World’s Greatest Detective” crown. Those are hallmarks of someone living through trauma and doing everything in their power to control every situation. Which, to most people, sounds crazy. How can anyone possibly have a handle on everything life throws their way? After suffering such a horrific loss, that type of logic bears no meaning. The goal is to ensure life never catches you off guard like that ever again.
Imagine waking up every day hoping the worst thing to ever happen to you is a nightmare. Imagine waking up every day realizing your dreams are often better than your reality. Eat your heart out, Alanis Morissette. Bruce never gives himself the time, or the permission, to get out of that space. He owns property in a state of mind where every reminder hurts, every memory cuts, and no one helps because they’re not allowed to even try.
As Batman, Bruce exposes that very raw nerve every night and channels it into rage or dogmatic dedication to his chosen crimefighting craft. But by the final credits, he realizes one horror begets another. Batman cannot make an actual difference in Gotham until Bruce Wayne allows his scars to heal. Or, at the least, applies ointment and a few bandages to help the healing process. Unlike most horror movies, The Batman states the protagonist cannot continue the cycle of violence while providing him an actual moment of clarity. Major trauma takes time to process, and while no one with two eyes and a brain can say Bruce is truly healed at the end of the movie, he is better. That’s a victory because the man who spends his nights fighting monsters has one less internal one to battle.
