Voltage Pictures co-founder Nicolas Chartier has never been short on ambition. The workaholic French expat (and former janitor at Disneyland Paris), started out in Hollywood as a screenwriter, worked in international sales and went on to win a best picture Oscar.
While many people might view one Academy Award as a career-highlight laurel on which to bed down, it only served to whet Chartier’s appetite. His indefatigable, behind-the-scenes work on The Hurt Locker in fact earned six Oscars in 2010, including the best picture accolade with Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal and Greg Shapiro — and marked the dawn of a new chapter.
Since then, Voltage, the privately funded venture that Chartier launched with Dean Devlin in 2005 before buying him out three years ago, has jumped into production with both feet. The company is disciplined on the financials but will take bets on eclectic work to complement the sales business in order to maintain volume flow for distribution partners.
The result is an unprecedented five films in Toronto that illustrate the kind of operation Chartier and Voltage COO and president Jonathan Deckter are building. Voltage fully financed drama The Headhunter’s Calling starring Gerard Butler and co-financed, with Russell Levine’s Route One, the genre mash-up Colossal starring Anne Hathaway. The company put up a minimum guarantee against international for Jim Sheridan’s The Secret Scripture and Bronwen Hughes’ drama The Journey Is The Destination, while it acts in a pure sales capacity on Rob Reiner’s LBJ.
Still, Chartier, a restless, no-nonsense personality whose passion for cinema has unearthed gems such as Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club and William Friedkin’s Killer Joe, and seen him launch a crusade against online pirates, is not about to relax. Nor, it seems, is anybody else at Voltage. When asked to ponder which films have marked milestones for the company, Chartier replies in a way that seems evasive but in fact speaks volumes: “Every movie that gets made is a milestone.”
Spreading out
Housed in the old New Line building in West Hollywood, Voltage has been scaling up operations — TV and merchandising are nascent businesses — while keeping a relatively low headcount of 20 staff. “There were fewer projects on the market after the 2008 financial crisis,” says Chartier. “We needed movies to sell, so we had to start producing/financing to have films to sell at markets.”
“We’re just trying to do the movies we want to do,” he adds, acknowledging a blend of passion projects and commercially robust ‘programmers’ for the sales slate. “We’re more active on the production front than probably anybody in the independent space,” says Deckter, who joined last year as a partner after serving as president of IM Global. He says the goal is to finance or co-finance 10 films a year and pick up another 10-15 to feed the distribution pipeline. “We’re a high-volume business,” Deckter says. “We see a need for content in the marketplace and a diverse slate. We strive to make cast-driven, upmarket movies that have wide release potential.”
To do that, Voltage has to stay nimble. “We greenlight films as fast as anybody,” says Deckter. Case in point is The Headhunter’s Calling: “We got the script about a year ago, we read it over the weekend and immediately engaged. We had a deal done within the week, were in Toronto two weeks later launching the movie and were rolling cameras six weeks after that.”
Crucial to the deal was producer Craig Flores, president of Voltage Productions, who had worked as an executive producer on 300 and knew Butler. “[Director] Mark Williams and Gerard came to myself and Nicolas with this Black List script they’d had for a while,” Flores says. “That’s where Nicolas and myself help these film-makers — very few of our competitors can greenlight a movie under $20m faster than us. The greenlight committee is very small and there’s a lot of informed decision-making but a good appetite for risk on the right project. On a picture-by-picture basis, we [may] collaborate with other equity, but the initial greenlight comes internally.”
The Voltage greenlight committee comprises Chartier, Deckter, Flores and Voltage Pictures president of production Zev Foreman. It runs projects by president of international sales and distribution John Fremes and his team. If the numbers work, they swing into action.
Strong producer voices at the company help shape an eclectic roster. Mike De Luca’s former production lieutenant Alissa Phillips recently came on board and the team includes Voltage Pictures senior vice-president of production Dominic Rustam. “The idea is to get different tastes and different sensibilities,” says Chartier. “If two people like this movie, maybe they’re right and if somebody else doesn’t like it, maybe they’re wrong.”
The terminal decline of DVD and the leisurely pace at which VoD is filling that gap, combined with the allure of TV and the wide array of entertainment options available to consumers, means diversity is key. “It’s difficult,” says Deckter, a sales veteran who understands the need to be proactive in a rapidly evolving climate. “Buyers are more and more looking for theatrical guarantees up-front, which is nothing new. There’s a downturn on the sales side based on all the local productions, which we’re competing against, but at the same time these distribution companies still need product.”
Busy production slate
So the production mandate remains urgent. “We shot four movies in July,” says Chartier, “and we have two in August and another two or three in September. It’s busy between the ones we finance and co-finance and sell because we’re trying to be open in genre and find the gems.” The July shoots included Henry Rollins action film The Last Heist, Toni Collette comedy Fun Mom Dinner and Mermaid’s Tale, while future productions will include The Professor And The Madman.
The latter is an example of the kind of project Voltage wants to board. Icon is producing the $20m-$30m feature and brought it to Voltage to fully finance. Mel Gibson and Sean Penn will star, and Gibson’s Apocalypto screenwriter Farhad Safinia adapted the script from Simon Winchester’s book about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary; Safinia will also make his directorial debut. “I’ve worked on this for three years,” says Foreman. “It’s not your average British costume drama.”
Voltage’s swift response time and capital ties proved advantageous. Once Penn signed on in July, schedules were aligned and cameras are set to roll on September 26 in Ireland. Voltage will launch sales in Toronto. Looking ahead, there are new frontiers to cross. Voltage’s young international television division can fully finance or co-finance original material or license the company’s film properties. It will start sales in MIPCOM on the six-episode Age Of The Living Dead.
The core business, though, remains film and the core message will encourage buyers feeling the pressure from Netflix and Amazon Studios, both of which Chartier and Deckter view as important buyers who are here to stay. “There will always be a place for movies,” says Deckter. “Going to the movies has always been a social experience that can’t be recreated inside your home. No matter how big your television is, it can’t be replaced.”

Among the Marvel superhero character’s who have dominated our screens over the years, few women have had the pleasure of being cast in a leading role – that is when you compare the amount of male actors who lead the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While Scarlett Johansson has seen success starring as Russian spy Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in the Marvel franchise, and featured in her own standalone film last year, few female actors have been given the chance to represent the MCU (a franchise which boasts 27 blockbusters, we might add) on their own.
Fortunately, things are changing for the better.
Dakota Johnson, whose early career involved starring in the Fifty Shades trilogy alongside Jamie Dornan, and who recently starred in the Oscar-nominated psychological thriller The Lost Daughter, is reportedly in talks to play a superhero in Marvel’s next instalment, Madame Web.
If the rumours are true, Johnson would join fellow female actors Johansson, Elisabeth Olsen and Zoe Saldana (MCU’s Wanda Maximoff and Gamora, respectively) in the comic book film franchise, and we for one can’t wait to see more powerful women take the helm of superhero action.

Love can drive people to do the most foolish things. This is especially true when that love is unhealthy, ensuring the relationship was doomed from the start. Of course there is no stopping someone who is so determined to possess the object of their affection; they cross moral lines and break more than hearts.
As evident in this set of horror stories from television, romance is nowhere to be found as the characters seek love in all the wrong places, or they find themselves on the receiving end of someone else’s sick infatuation. Cruelty, deceit and jealousy line these five distinct tales of deadly attractions from horror anthology television shows.
Night Gallery (1969-1973) The Caterpillar
Starting things off is a notable episode about unrequited love. The second season of Rod Serling‘s Twilight Zone follow-up, Night Gallery, came to a close with one of the series’ most warped stories. Even famed genre filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has nothing but kind words to say on the episode’s commentary track.
Jeannot Szwarc‘s adaptation of Oscar Cook‘s “Boomerang” is set in Borneo during the rainy season. Laurence Harvey plays Steven Macy, a British expatriate staying at the secluded home of John Warwick (Tom Helmore) and his much younger wife, Rhona (Joanna Pettet). Steven, who cannot fathom why a beautiful twenty-something like Rhona is married to a man in his sixties, quickly turns lovesick. He then seeks help from a local named Tom Robinson (Don Knight); the handyman can have someone implant a deadly earwig in John’s ear canal. Unfortunately for Steven, a grave error is made.
Earwigs have a false reputation for consuming brains if they somehow reached the inside of someone’s ear. Since they cannot supposedly reverse themselves, earwigs would have no choice but to go forward in the canal until they reach the brain. Back in the day when this episode first aired, audiences were more likely to believe such a fearsome creature exists. The earwig is indeed real, but they certainly do not chow down on brains. Does any of this matter? Unless someone is a stickler for the details, this revelation has little bearing on the story. That goes to show how powerful “The Caterpillar” really is.
Steven is done in by his own entitlement, and the consequences of his gross behavior catch up with him in the most horrifying manner. Much like the earwig, this episode’s twist stays on the brain.
Darkroom (1981-1982) Who’s There?
The short-lived horror anthology series Darkroom was hosted by James Coburn. It came and went with little attention, but there are some memorable stories to be found among the seven episodes aired. A segment from the finale fits the theme of soured romance.
“Who’s There?” is a short story wedged between two others; those being “Exit Line” and “The Rarest of Wines”. Here a concerned neighbor named Steve (Grant Goodeve) has the misfortune of hearing his neighbors, a married couple, argue every day in the apartment unit above his. Their quarreling is put on hold once the husband and wife (Michael Lembeck, Dianne Kay) leave town; Barry has an interview in Chicago, and Claire is visiting her mother. What should have been a break from the domestic din ends up being a night Steve will never forget after he hears a strange noise in the couple’s apartment.
The middle portion of Darkroom‘s last episode stands out because of the mark it leaves behind. As it turns out, the noise heard upstairs is Barry returning early from his trip. Now he sits in his kitchen, waiting for Claire to come home as well. He confesses to his neighbor what ails his heart and marriage, and Steve does his best to fix things. The story then takes a turn that viewers might have suspected all along. Even so, “Who’s There?” packs a big punch in spite of its small runtime.
This masterful episode is the combined work of director Paul Lynch and screenwriter Brian Clemens. Slasher fans recognize Lynch as the director of Prom Night, whereas ardent fans of British TV know Clemens from Thriller and The Avengers.
Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics (1987-1989) Bluebeard
Fairy tales in their purest form are not known for having the most wholesome relationships when viewed through a modern lens. Knowing that, their themes and morals still hold up after all these years. Reaching those lessons, however, often involves a journey fraught with grisly imagery and bizarre plot turns.
The Brothers Grimm provided most of the source material for a late-1980s anime called Grimm Masterpiece Theater. When the series was dubbed into English, it was retitled Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics. The English dub was considered all but lost until recently when Discotek Media restored and released the entire series. Now fans can relive this unique adaptation of their favorite fairy tales.

One such example is “Bluebeard” (“Ao hi ge” in Japanese), a retelling of a famous French folktale. This anime interpretation sees a young woman named Josephine accepting the hand of a prince she has not even met. Her three brothers are wary and move their woodworking business closer to the prince’s castle so they can keep an eye on their sister. The prince, who is identified by his “blue” beard, tests his new wife’s obedience by forbidding her to open a locked room while he is away. When Josephine defies his order, she makes a horrible discovery.
This early example of domestic horror boasts a warning about greediness while also telling women not to abide by patriarchal rules. Disobeying her husband at first welcomes danger and fear, yet later Josephine is free from Bluebeard’s control.

The third season of HBO’s horror anthology classic Tales from the Crypt opened with “Loved to Death“, a popular episode about one-sided love. The basis can be found in issue 25 of EC’s Tales from the Crypt, and it is based on John Henry Collier‘s “The Chaser”. A vintage adaptation of Collier’s short can be found in the classic Twilight Zone show.
“Loved to Death” shadows an aspiring screenwriter named Edward (Andrew McCarthy), who has developed an unshakable crush on his neighbor, Miranda (Mariel Hemingway). When Edward cannot win her heart the old-fashioned way, he accepts a love potion from the reclusive landlord (David Hemmings). What seems like a dream at first swiftly turns into a nightmare after Miranda becomes Edward’s insatiable lover.
The episode is regarded for its shocking ending, where Hemingway’s Miranda pursues Edward in the afterlife. Her gruesome visage, the result of jumping out the window upon Edward’s death, is unique to Tom Mankiewicz and Joe Minion‘s version. This new aspect of the story underscores the fact that Edward never loved Miranda; he only loved her looks.
Stories like “Loved to Death” leave a bad taste in the mouth, but Tales from the Crypt never had much interest in playing nice.

The 2002 The Twilight Zone has been disregarded by audiences and critics since it first aired, but looking back, the revival had value even if it never reached the great heights of the original series. What it lacked in groundbreaking insight it made up for in sheer entertainment.
Tina, Taryn Manning‘s character in “Fair Warning“, finds herself threatened by a stranger (Devon Gummersall) one night. The assailant, George, comes to Tina’s flower shop and says he is going to kill her unless she stops him. When the cops check the suspect out, alibis and a lack of physical evidence suggest the accuser is mistaken. Just as Tina starts to believe she is imagining everything, it becomes clear what is really going on here.
Although there is a shortage of doozies in this Twilight Zone, and a lot of other stories could be considered duds, “Fair Warning” floats closer to the middle than the bottom. The episode is engaging if not ridiculous.
What helps make this one more enjoyable than others is its reveal at the end. Is it absurd? Yes. Is it original? Maybe. Stalker laws are frustrating enough without the offender having a supernatural edge.

As evident in this set of horror stories from television, romance is nowhere to be found as the characters seek love in all the wrong places, or they find themselves on the receiving end of someone else’s sick infatuation. Cruelty, deceit and jealousy line these five distinct tales of deadly attractions from horror anthology television shows.
Night Gallery (1969-1973) The Caterpillar
Starting things off is a notable episode about unrequited love. The second season of Rod Serling‘s Twilight Zone follow-up, Night Gallery, came to a close with one of the series’ most warped stories. Even famed genre filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has nothing but kind words to say on the episode’s commentary track.
Jeannot Szwarc‘s adaptation of Oscar Cook‘s “Boomerang” is set in Borneo during the rainy season. Laurence Harvey plays Steven Macy, a British expatriate staying at the secluded home of John Warwick (Tom Helmore) and his much younger wife, Rhona (Joanna Pettet). Steven, who cannot fathom why a beautiful twenty-something like Rhona is married to a man in his sixties, quickly turns lovesick. He then seeks help from a local named Tom Robinson (Don Knight); the handyman can have someone implant a deadly earwig in John’s ear canal. Unfortunately for Steven, a grave error is made.
Earwigs have a false reputation for consuming brains if they somehow reached the inside of someone’s ear. Since they cannot supposedly reverse themselves, earwigs would have no choice but to go forward in the canal until they reach the brain. Back in the day when this episode first aired, audiences were more likely to believe such a fearsome creature exists. The earwig is indeed real, but they certainly do not chow down on brains. Does any of this matter? Unless someone is a stickler for the details, this revelation has little bearing on the story. That goes to show how powerful “The Caterpillar” really is.
Steven is done in by his own entitlement, and the consequences of his gross behavior catch up with him in the most horrifying manner. Much like the earwig, this episode’s twist stays on the brain.
Darkroom (1981-1982) Who’s There?
The short-lived horror anthology series Darkroom was hosted by James Coburn. It came and went with little attention, but there are some memorable stories to be found among the seven episodes aired. A segment from the finale fits the theme of soured romance.
“Who’s There?” is a short story wedged between two others; those being “Exit Line” and “The Rarest of Wines”. Here a concerned neighbor named Steve (Grant Goodeve) has the misfortune of hearing his neighbors, a married couple, argue every day in the apartment unit above his. Their quarreling is put on hold once the husband and wife (Michael Lembeck, Dianne Kay) leave town; Barry has an interview in Chicago, and Claire is visiting her mother. What should have been a break from the domestic din ends up being a night Steve will never forget after he hears a strange noise in the couple’s apartment.
The middle portion of Darkroom‘s last episode stands out because of the mark it leaves behind. As it turns out, the noise heard upstairs is Barry returning early from his trip. Now he sits in his kitchen, waiting for Claire to come home as well. He confesses to his neighbor what ails his heart and marriage, and Steve does his best to fix things. The story then takes a turn that viewers might have suspected all along. Even so, “Who’s There?” packs a big punch in spite of its small runtime.
This masterful episode is the combined work of director Paul Lynch and screenwriter Brian Clemens. Slasher fans recognize Lynch as the director of Prom Night, whereas ardent fans of British TV know Clemens from Thriller and The Avengers.

QCODE has partnered with New Regency as the studio, which will independently finance the project. This will be the second independent TV show New Regency is financing for QCODE, Automatik and Oddfellows. The first was The Edge Of Sleep, also based on a hit QCODE podcast series.
All episodes of the first season will be written and directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, who is a series creator, executive producer, and writer. In 2016, Joris-Peyrafitte became one of the youngest winners at the Sundance Film Festival when AS YOU ARE won the Dramatic Special Jury Award. Shortly after, he directed DREAMLAND, starring Margot Robbie, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival to rave reviews and was released by Paramount Pictures. Miles Joris-Peyrafitte also directed the award-winning docu-short BRUJAS.

“Our study indicates that avenues exist for producing more accurate forecasts for tropical cyclones using available yet underutilized data,” said Yunji Zhang, assistant research professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State. “This could lead to better warnings and preparedness for tropical cyclone-associated hazards in the future.”
Adding microwave data collected by low-Earth-orbiting satellites to existing computer weather forecast models showed improvements in forecasting storm track, intensity and rainfall when using Hurricane Harvey as a case-study, the scientists said.
“Over the ocean, we don’t have other kinds of observations underneath the cloud tops to tell us where eyewalls are, where the strongest convections are, and how many rain or snow particles there are in those regions, except for occasional reconnaissance aircraft that fly into some of hurricanes,” Zhang said. “This is very important for later predictions of how intense storms will be or how much rainfall hurricanes will bring.”
The research builds on the team’s prior work that improved hurricane forecasts using data assimilation, a statistical method that aims to paint the most accurate picture of current weather conditions, important because even small changes in the atmosphere can lead to large discrepancies in forecasts over time.
In the prior work, scientists with Penn State’s Center for Advanced Data Assimilation and Predictability Techniques assimilated infrared brightness temperature data from the U.S. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, GOES-16. Brightness temperatures show how much radiation is emitted by objects on Earth and in the atmosphere, and the scientists used infrared brightness temperatures at different frequencies to paint a better picture of atmospheric water vapor and cloud formation.
But infrared sensors only capture what is happening at the cloud tops. Microwave sensors view an entire vertical column, offering new insight into what is happening underneath clouds after storms have formed, the scientists said.
“This is especially important when a hurricane matures in later stages of development, when pronounced and coherent cloud structures exist and you can’t see what’s going on underneath them,” Zhang said. “That’s the time when hurricanes are most dangerous because they’re very strong and sometimes already approaching landfall and threatening people. That’s when the microwave data are going to provide the most valuable information.”
Combining assimilated infrared and microwave data reduced forecast errors in track, rapid intensification and peak intensity compared to infrared radiation alone for Hurricane Harvey, the researchers reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. They said assimilating both sets of data resulted in a 24-hour increase in forecast lead-time for the rapid intensification of the storm, a critical time when some storms quickly gain strength.
Assimilating the microwave data also led to a better understanding of the amount of water particles in the storm and more accurate rainfall totals for Harvey, the scientists said.
“Rainfall predictions are extremely critical for preparing the public for hazards and evacuations,” Zhang said. “If we have a better understanding of how many rainfall particles there are in the storm, we have a higher likelihood of more accurate forecasts of how much rainfall there will be. Based on that, we will have more advanced guidance on how people should react.”

“Our study indicates that avenues exist for producing more accurate forecasts for tropical cyclones using available yet underutilized data,” said Yunji Zhang, assistant research professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at Penn State. “This could lead to better warnings and preparedness for tropical cyclone-associated hazards in the future.”
Adding microwave data collected by low-Earth-orbiting satellites to existing computer weather forecast models showed improvements in forecasting storm track, intensity and rainfall when using Hurricane Harvey as a case-study, the scientists said.
“Over the ocean, we don’t have other kinds of observations underneath the cloud tops to tell us where eyewalls are, where the strongest convections are, and how many rain or snow particles there are in those regions, except for occasional reconnaissance aircraft that fly into some of hurricanes,” Zhang said. “This is very important for later predictions of how intense storms will be or how much rainfall hurricanes will bring.”
The research builds on the team’s prior work that improved hurricane forecasts using data assimilation, a statistical method that aims to paint the most accurate picture of current weather conditions, important because even small changes in the atmosphere can lead to large discrepancies in forecasts over time.
In the prior work, scientists with Penn State’s Center for Advanced Data Assimilation and Predictability Techniques assimilated infrared brightness temperature data from the U.S. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, GOES-16. Brightness temperatures show how much radiation is emitted by objects on Earth and in the atmosphere, and the scientists used infrared brightness temperatures at different frequencies to paint a better picture of atmospheric water vapor and cloud formation.
But infrared sensors only capture what is happening at the cloud tops. Microwave sensors view an entire vertical column, offering new insight into what is happening underneath clouds after storms have formed, the scientists said.
“This is especially important when a hurricane matures in later stages of development, when pronounced and coherent cloud structures exist and you can’t see what’s going on underneath them,” Zhang said. “That’s the time when hurricanes are most dangerous because they’re very strong and sometimes already approaching landfall and threatening people. That’s when the microwave data are going to provide the most valuable information.”
Combining assimilated infrared and microwave data reduced forecast errors in track, rapid intensification and peak intensity compared to infrared radiation alone for Hurricane Harvey, the researchers reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. They said assimilating both sets of data resulted in a 24-hour increase in forecast lead-time for the rapid intensification of the storm, a critical time when some storms quickly gain strength.
Assimilating the microwave data also led to a better understanding of the amount of water particles in the storm and more accurate rainfall totals for Harvey, the scientists said.
“Rainfall predictions are extremely critical for preparing the public for hazards and evacuations,” Zhang said. “If we have a better understanding of how many rainfall particles there are in the storm, we have a higher likelihood of more accurate forecasts of how much rainfall there will be. Based on that, we will have more advanced guidance on how people should react.”

But the best to set hearts aflutter—and then tear them asunder with glorious tragedy—is the rather gaudy 2004 big screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical.
It’s not the best film version of this tale (that would likely be the 1925 silent classic starring Lon Chaney Sr.), nor is it technically the best way to experience Webber’s music when it’s so much more luscious on stage. And yet, Joel Schumacher’s sumptuous adaptation for the screen is the most romantic Phantom film, not least of all because it is the first movie to keep Leroux’s tragic ending in which a love that cannot be between a disfigured musical genius and his ingenue muse redeems, if not saves, a life. Plus, the songs are still pretty ear-wormy and Emmy Rossum makes a compelling leading lady debut as the young soprano, Christine Daeé. – David Crow

Body-horror has never been more tender, or more effective as an allegory for losing a loved one to terminal illness. Released at the height of the AIDS crisis, the sci-fi horror film is a moving tale of courtship, honeymoon, and tragedy. It begins as a rom-com. Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) is a reporter for a science journal looking for a story. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a socially awkward scientist who thinks he can change the world. He tries to flirt as best as a scientist can. He brags about his motion sickness, which can cause a nosebleed at the slightest velocity change, shows her his closet of identical suits, and introduces her to his baboon friends.
Finally, he pulls out the big guns, basically inventing the teleporter from Star Trek. He should have watched the episode “The Enemy Within,” because soon he is as reliable as a housefly. Seth proposes, by their second date, that Veronica should have exclusive book rights to the mechanism’s development, and the characters are on screen together for almost the entire film. Alone with a bottle of champagne and Chinese takeout for two, Seth gets jealous and shoots himself through the telepod. Veronica knows something is different from the first kiss after his breakthrough. Later he picks up a strange woman in a bar and shoots her through the machine. Throughout, Veronica understands and forgives. She loves him as his hair falls out, she loves him as his ears fall off. She loves him when he’s manic, and no matter how disgusting it is to watch him eat sugar. Even as he becomes unrecognizable, they never give up on each other. – Tony Sokol

John Landis’ horror classic is known for being one of the few movies to totally nail it in two genres – it’s both very funny and really scary – but it’s less often celebrated for also being a moving love story. David Naughton and Griffin Dunne play best buds David and Jack, a couple of US backpackers visiting the Yorkshire Moors, when they are attacked by a mysterious beast, which kills Jack and maims David. Weeks later David wakes up in a hospital in London under the care of pretty nurse Alex (Jenny Agutter), who David soon forms a relationship with. As David begins his full moon transformations and is urged to kill himself by visions of an undead Jack and the rest of David’s victims, it’s the love between David and Alex that marks the heart of the movie. It’s why we care. Werewolf David transforms over two nights of carnage ultimately finding himself trapped in an alleyway, surrounded by police. In a tragic final beat, Alex runs to calm him, telling him she loves him. For a second we wonder if love might truly be able to calm the beast. But it is not to be. The final moments turn the funny, gory, scary werewolf movie into a heartbreaking tragedy. – Rosie Fletcher

Simon Pegg wanted to make fun of rom-coms. So, Edgar Wright created the zom-rom-com. Shaun of the Dead is a real, old-style zombie movie, the kind George A. Romero used to make. It shrouds social commentary in horror, saying we are already such zombies, in our day-to-day ruts, we wouldn’t notice a zombie invasion. It’s also funny as hell boiled over. But the bleeding heart of the film lies in true romance. Shaun is a loser. He likes to drink, plays video games, can’t keep promises, and will never get his shit together. He can’t even remember where he and his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) met. All her friends cheer when she packs him off to “live a little.” But he comes to life when the undead come to town.

Having overcome battles with drinking, drugs and depression, Fury capped his remarkable return to top level boxing by beating Deontay Wilder in February to become a two-time heavyweight champion of the world.
“To me that is a Rocky story, Tyson Fury,” said British acting great Winstone, a London schoolboy champion who won 80 of his 88 amateur fights.
“You would have written him off as a big old plodder. But he put his mind to it, he went ‘I’m good enough, I’m going to train and put all the rubbish behind me and get on with it’ and look at what he has done – he has won a world title.
“He is a world champion and he deserves to be as well.”

Winstone has been a big fan of boxing throughout his life and was in awe of Fury’s performance against Wilder earlier this year, as he put on a masterclass to snatch the previously unbeaten American’s WBC title.
“What I loved about it is he went back to basic boxing. His boxing ability was so far superior than Wilder’s,” he said.
“He played with him at times. He knew what he was going to do.
“It was a fantastic show of skill from Tyson and he just went up in my opinion so much.”
Winstone is also a big fan of Britain’s other world heavyweight champion – Anthony Joshua.
AJ suffered a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz last summer but reclaimed his WBA, IBF and WBO belts in impressive fashion in their rematch in December.

“What I like about AJ is the respect he shows to the other fighter,” said Winstone, the co-founder of a new sports agency, Integral Sports Management.
“A lot of people come out and dog one another off to sell tickets but AJ has still sold tickets by being a gentleman and showing respect to the man standing on the other side of the ring.
“He went back to his boxing ability against Andy Ruiz and he boxed beautifully. He boxed his head off.
“We have two heavyweight world champions – it is quite incredible.”
Like every other boxing fan, Winstone is eager to see Fury and Joshua face off once the sport resumes following the coronavirus lockdown.
But who would he back to emerge triumphant in what would be the biggest fight in British boxing history?
“If he keeps himself in shape, I fancy Tyson to win,” said Winstone.

She has dreams and flashbacks of her dad, his touch of madness and instability, and their relationship. She’s visited by an ex-student of her father’s who’s digging for proofs of his genius, as well as her sister who struggles to understand the depression she’s living with. Paltrow plays the character at the center of all that very well with a naturalistic performance. The character is involved in an interesting twist towards the end.
5 The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

For Tom, the assignment turns into an elongated stay in gorgeous, sun-drenched scenery with tantalizing people, and then soon takes a dark turn. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Dickie’s lover Marge, caught in the midst of a web of lies and her painful love for Dickie (for whose attention many are competing). Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a gripping and aesthetically story of envy, desires, deception, crime and other twists.

Paltrow plays her part in proceedings with the character of Margot, who is adopted into the Tenenbaum family. Paltrow plays slightly against type, as Margot is an unemotive chain-smoker, hiding her pain behind a polished exterior of heavy makeup and a dead-straight bob.

There’s deceit, unrequited love, and other interesting dynamics as Paltrow and Shaw each bring a very different type of potential relationship with Phoenix’s character. The movie is refreshing in that it doesn’t follow any predefined tropes. It also has an ending that invites thought from the viewer to decide how they might come to terms with it.

Shakespeare in Love is an endlessly quotable and rewatchable tale of love, melancholy, and comedy in which Paltrow lights up the screen with her golden hair that matches the film’s often yellowish hues. She’s Viola, Shakespeare’s muse for Romeo and Juliet, and as the film indicates at the end, for many more stories to come. That final sequence makes for one of the best endings in cinema. Mixing bitterness and hope, it sees Shakespeare helped by Viola to widen his gaze and turn tragedy into inspiration. Viola’s “soul is greater than the ocean,” and she will be his “heroine for all time.” Gwyneth Paltrow turns in a great performance that makes those words believable and convincing.

Se7en is one of the most difficult films of all time. If not properly contended with, it can be crushingly depressing. But this masterful film from David Fincher is not in fact a work of nihilism. It’s more of a very human and profoundly meaningful tragedy about a set of responses to the problem of evil with other evils and mistaken attitudes. Part of the reason it’s such a compelling work that can’t be dismissed lies in the way it nuances its somber tone with a felt humanity. And that’s what Gwyneth Paltrow, along with co-stars Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, brings to the table. The warmth of the dinner scene between these three, for example, is instrumental to the film’s success. Paltrow deserves special credit as she really embodies what could be lost if we become extremists in fighting evil.
