What it is: Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 iconic action-adventure fantasy fever dream about immortal warriors stars Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery, who plays an Egyptian immortal named Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez.
Why it’s like Elden Ring: High fantasy with swordplay, a narrative that unwraps slowly, and a twisted, monstrous villain. This is basically the same as getting invaded by another player in Elden Ring.
What it is: A 1981 dark fantasy movie about a young wizard hunting a dragon, Dragonslayer received Oscar nominations for its visual effects (including a 40-foot hydraulic dragon made out of of 16 puppets) and original score.

The story focuses on three women at Ancaster Collage. Professor Gail Bishop (Regina Hall), the first Black “master” of the residence hall, Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee), a first-year student, and Professor Liv Beckman (Amber Gray), who is up for tenure.
Each woman comes up against their own struggles as something sinister is afoot on the college that is built on the site of a Salem-era gallows hill.
Prometheus (2012)
The sci-fi horror Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien), this movie serves as the fifth installment of the Alien franchise, a prequel to the original.
This movie is set in the late 21st century and finds a crew on the spaceship Prometheus as it searches for the origins of humanity. The crew uses a star map found on Earth in ancient cultural artifacts, which leads them to a distant world where they discover something that could end the human species.

Train to Busan is a Korean action horror film that sees a sudden zombie outbreak on a train ride from Seoul to Busan. The majority of the film takes place on the train, making it a wild ride of a movie.
The story focus on Seok-woo (Gong Yoo ), a workaholic divorcee, and his daughter Su-an (Kim Su-an). Her birthday wish is to spend the day with her mother in Busan, which is why they are on the train when the outbreak occurs. The film follows the main characters and many others as the passengers become infected. They fight for survival as more people reanimate, making it more and more difficult to escape.
Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The psychological horror Silence of the Lambs is based on Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel of the same name. Released in 1991, this film became the fifth highest-grossing film worldwide for that year.
The story follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), who hunts the serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), a man who skins his female victims. She seeks out the assistance of convicted cannibalistic killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).
This is a brilliant horror film with a psychological storyline that will pull you in, as will the performances by Foster and Hopkins.

The found-footage horror, Hell House LLC., follows a group of documentarians as they look into what happened at a haunted attraction in 2009.
The film is set five years later when the documentary crew investigates the haunted attraction Hell House that saw the death of 15 guests and staff members on their opening night. Reports circulated that an unknown malfunction occurred, causing the deaths, which was the only explanation. Now, the crew will reveal everything that happened leading up to and during the opening night tragedy.

For the past week, Austin has been soaked with blood, guts, and gore—figuratively speaking, at least. SXSW has long been a favorite among studios for horror premieres; past debuts have included A Quiet Place, Us, The Cabin in the Woods, The Invitation, and Drag Me to Hell. This year’s crop of films has been no exception.
Ti West’s Xand Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies (starring a convincingly dopey Pete Davidson) have ranked among the most anticipated releases. In both cases, the end results live up to the hype—and better yet, there’s plenty more where those came from. Feast your eyes (if you dare!) on all of SXSW’s best horror offerings.
X
Let’s start with the most obvious. The House of the Devil director Ti West’s slasher borrows a lot from films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho, not to mention some of M. Night Shyamalan’s freaky grandparents movie The Visit. But at no point does it feel derivative. Stellar performances from star Mia Goth (seen here playing two roles), Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, and Kid Cudi ground this chilling tale about a group of young and beautiful people who show up at a remote farmhouse to film a porno. When their elderly hosts find out what they’re up to, the bloodbath begins. Set in 1979, the film is a deliciously bloody throwback and an absolute must-watch—even if its thematic work is sometimes more effective than its kill sequences.
X is now playing in theaters.
BODIES BODIES BODIES
Speaking of excellent casts—have you seen the incredible assortment of performers Reijn rounded up for the deadly hurricane party at the center of horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies? (Or, as my brain insists on calling it thanks to Megan Thee Stallion, Body-ody-odies?)
Start with Pete Davidson, in peak form here as an obnoxious tool, and then add in Lee Pace in peak comedic (and, let’s be honest, physical) form, Amandla Stenberg, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm breakout Maria Bakalova, and Shiva Babystar Rachel Sennott—who runs away with the entire film.
Here, a group of rich and obnoxious twentysomethings (and, in Lee Pace’s case, one of their way-too-old boyfriends) get together to ride out a dangerous storm. But things get a little too intense when they decide to play a party game that exposes all of the emotional fractures underlying their seemingly sunny friendships. Raucously funny and unpredictable until the end (at least in terms of how all the bodies eventually hit the floor), this one’s definitely better when watched in a crowd.
A24 has not yet announced a release date for Bodies Bodies Bodies.
WATCHER
By far the most Alfred Hitchcock-ian of this year’s debuts, Watcher marks a feature premiere for its director, Chloe Okuno. But its lead, It Follows and The Guest star Maika Monroe, is right at home in this latest thriller—which finds her playing a New Yorker named Julia who moves overseas to Bucharest after her husband’s promotion.
Voyeurism, paranoia, and the feeling of being out of one’s element underpin this tense character study, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year; Julia, who doesn’t speak Romanian, feels isolated and relies on her husband to translate for her. It’s an unnerving position to be in, especially when a man starts constantly watching her from a window across the street. Is he really stalking her, or is she just imagining things like all the men around her seem to believe?

Monroe plays Julia with just the right blend of jittery emotion and self- doubt; her character’s certainty about her situation waxes and wanes as she confronts various people who refuse to believe her. Okuno imbues each shot with dread, and the film’s washed-out color palette makes a perfect canvas for the film’s saturated, gruesomely bloody finale. Horror fans who have yet to hear Okuno’s name almost certainly will soon; this one’s a must-see, and she’s already got a Netflix thriller starring Anna Kendrick on the way.

HYPOCHONDRIAC
Among the most visually creative of this year’s SXSW horror picks, Hypochondriac examines the ways in which unprocessed childhood trauma can come back to haunt us—through the story of a potter who begins hallucinating a person in a wolf suit.
Writer and director Addison Heimann revisited a real-life personal trauma in this story, which follows a man named Will (Zach Villa) as he tries to navigate an increasingly serious relationship. His partner, Luke (Devon Graye), is as kind and supportive as they come. But Will struggles to trust him and open up thanks, in large part, to his traumatic experiences with his mother, who tried to kill him during his adolescence. That becomes a big problem when Will begins hallucinating and suspects he might have more in common with his mother than he’d like to think.
Villa, seen previously in Destroyer and American Horror Story: 1984, radiates with terror in this role. Cinematographer Dustin Supencheck’s camera movement is disorienting, and at Will’s worst moments we see everything in a dizzying whirlwind of kaleidoscopic doubles. A chief fear for survivors of parental abuse can be the possibility of one day turning out just like their abuser—a concern Hypochondriac explores both sensitively and thoroughly. Thankfully, however, the film provides a little bit of hope before all is said and done.
Hypochondriac is set for release on April 8.
JETHICA
By far the sparsest of SXSW’s horror offerings, Jethica is an idiosyncratic, surprisingly funny little gem. Pete Ohs directs Callie Hernandez (Blair Witch) as Elena, a mysterious young woman who reunites with an old friend from high school named Jessica (Ashley Denise Robinson). As it turns out, Jessica has a stalker who’s followed her across state lines. This is no ordinary creep, either; it’s going to take more than a restraining order or jail time to get rid of him.
Hernandez and Robinson make a wonderful pair, with chemistry that feels easy and familiar right off the bat. The two also vibe well with Ohs’ minimalist style, which leans hard on dry humor and dispenses with any kind of sentimentality—at least until the film’s end, which, all things considered, turns out to be surprisingly sweet.
A release date for Jethica has not yet been announced.
BITCH ASS
Original Candyman Tony Todd is always a welcome presence on our screens. Here, the actor plays the narrator of a gruesome tale in which a simple robbery becomes a bloody, Squid Game-like massacre.
“One by one, they try to best him—and one by one, they fall. Whether anyone can actually outsmart him is what we’re left to find out.”
Actor and writer Bill Posley makes his feature directorial debut with this film. “Bitch Ass” is the name given to our main character and antagonist, played by Tunde Laleye, by his high school bullies. (His real name is Cecil.) An homage to Black horror films like Tales from the Hoodand The People Under the Stairs, Bitch Ass finds Cecil setting up a series of Saw-like traps, all based on his favorite childhood games, for the robbers he knows are coming to loot his grandmother’s house. One by one, they try to best him—and one by one, they fall. Whether anyone can actually outsmart him is what we’re left to find out.
Rife with clever editing and acted with both terrifying conviction and bleak humor until the end, Bitch Ass is as well-paced as it is diabolical. Its plot never lags, and not one sequence lingers past its welcome. If anything, I just wish they’d found a way to keep Tony Todd on my screen for a little longer.

SISSY
Aisha Dee is a long way away from The Bold Type in this lavishly styled Australian horror-comedy from directors Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes.
There’s a candy-colored wicked streak to this film, which finds Dee playing Cecilia, a mega-popular mental health influencer and one-half of a best friend duo that came to an abrupt, mysterious end. Reunited 12 years after the fact with her old BFF, Emma, Cecilia—who emphatically no longer goes by her childhood nickname, Sissy—agrees to come along for her bachelorette weekend in a remote cabin in the mountains. She doesn’t realize, however, that she’ll soon be reunited with another classmate from the old days—one who’s far less excited to see her.
Along with Hypochondriac and Bitch Ass, Sissy is among the most visually memorable of this year’s releases. It’s meticulously and humorously stylized to unfold like the cinematic version of a glitter filter on Instagram, a deliberate contrast to the occasionally nausea-inducing gore of the proceedings themselves. Dee is a terrifying revelation as Cecilia, a character whose true nature (like everyone else’s in the film) eludes us until the very end.

DEADSTREAM
Never has “like and subscribe” culture been quite this bone-chilling. Husband and wife writer-director duo Joseph and Vanessa Winter’s horror-comedy finds Joseph playing a disgraced stunt streamer who decides the best way to win back his following (and hopefully more sponsors) is to stay overnight in a haunted house. That goes about as well as one might expect.
Shawn built his career by “facing his fears” online, but this stunt takes things to a new level. He might’ve come prepared with garlic, Holy water, and other demon-fighting accoutrements, but Winter’s loud-mouthed character has no idea what he’s up against. Winters plays his character with just the right blend of sincere fright and theatrical high-pitched screams; at first, it’s hard to tell how much of the character’s anxiety is performative—a mainstay of most paranormal shows. By the end, however, there’s no mistaking the genuine fear.
Staged like a found footage film, Deadstream veers into Evil Dead territory in its stunning final act—a wonderfully ghoulish display of practical creature effects sure to warm any Sam Raimi fan’s heart. Beyond that, all I can say is that it’s best to go in totally cold.

This year’s crop of films has been no exception.
Ti West’s Xand Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies (starring a convincingly dopey Pete Davidson) have ranked among the most anticipated releases. In both cases, the end results live up to the hype—and better yet, there’s plenty more where those came from. Feast your eyes (if you dare!) on all of SXSW’s best horror offerings.

Let’s start with the most obvious. The House of the Devil director Ti West’s slasher borrows a lot from films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho, not to mention some of M. Night Shyamalan’s freaky grandparents movie The Visit. But at no point does it feel derivative. Stellar performances from star Mia Goth (seen here playing two roles), Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, and Kid Cudi ground this chilling tale about a group of young and beautiful people who show up at a remote farmhouse to film a porno. When their elderly hosts find out what they’re up to, the bloodbath begins. Set in 1979, the film is a deliciously bloody throwback and an absolute must-watch—even if its thematic work is sometimes more effective than its kill sequences.
X is now playing in theaters.
BODIES BODIES BODIES
Speaking of excellent casts—have you seen the incredible assortment of performers Reijn rounded up for the deadly hurricane party at the center of horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies? (Or, as my brain insists on calling it thanks to Megan Thee Stallion, Body-ody-odies?)
Start with Pete Davidson, in peak form here as an obnoxious tool, and then add in Lee Pace in peak comedic (and, let’s be honest, physical) form, Amandla Stenberg, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm breakout Maria Bakalova, and Shiva Babystar Rachel Sennott—who runs away with the entire film.
Here, a group of rich and obnoxious twentysomethings (and, in Lee Pace’s case, one of their way-too-old boyfriends) get together to ride out a dangerous storm. But things get a little too intense when they decide to play a party game that exposes all of the emotional fractures underlying their seemingly sunny friendships. Raucously funny and unpredictable until the end (at least in terms of how all the bodies eventually hit the floor), this one’s definitely better when watched in a crowd.

WATCHER
By far the most Alfred Hitchcock-ian of this year’s debuts, Watcher marks a feature premiere for its director, Chloe Okuno. It’s is now 2022 and we’re all a year older, as are all of our favorite movies. While the characters captured on film don’t age, the movies themselves do — and some are older than you think. It’s hard to believe, but 2002 was 20 years ago.
That’s right, it’s been 20 since Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics, 20 years since Homeland Security was established, and 20 years since I went to senior prom.
There are also several movies we all know well that are hitting the two-decade mark this year. In an effort to make you feel old, here are 10 movies turning 20 in 2022.
‘The Count of Monte Cristo’
Release date: Jan. 25, 2002
January and February are often the doldrums of movie releases, but January of 2002 gave us a real gem. That’s when we all got to see Edmond Dantes on the big screen in the form of Jim Caviezel.
“The Count of Monte Cristo” received mixed reviews from critics; but for my money, it’s a fun and engaging adventure that’s still worth watching 20 years later. The filmmakers may have taken some liberties with Alexander Dumas’ famous novel, but the movie is a good time and one I think you can enjoy whether you remember watching it in the theater or weren’t even born when it was released.
‘Ice Age’
Release date: March 15, 2002
When the animated film “Ice Age” drifted into theaters in 2002, 20th Century Fox had high hopes for the movie — but I don’t think anyone knew the juggernaut it would become.
The film made over $383 million worldwide and has five sequels. The franchise has made over $6 billion dollars at the box office, making it one of the most successful franchises of all time, and it all started 20 years ago.
‘Spider-Man’
Release date: May 3, 2002
It seems most of us headed to the theater to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home” recently. The film was a blast and is the third installment of the Tom Holland Spider-Man franchise. But none of that would have been possible without 2002’s “Spider-Man.“
While 1989’s “Batman” changed superhero movies, it was “Spider-Man” that showed the world superhero movies could be entertaining and well-made. The film really kicked off our current cinematic love affair with superheroes.
It’s been 20 years since “Spider-Man” crawled into theaters, and in those two decades we’ve seen eight different movies, three different actors take on the role, and then got to watch all of them reunite in the latest offering.
(You don’t get to call “spoiler” on that. You had your chance to see the movie.)
‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’
Release date: May 16, 2002
Believe it or not, it has been 20 years since we learned how much Anakin Skywalker hates sand. The second installment of the Star Wars prequels, “Attack of the Clones,” flew into theaters two decades ago and none of us has ever been the same.
With “Phantom Menace,” we were all just so excited to see a new Star Wars movie that we ignored some things. Then “Attack of the Clones” arrived and we all wanted to like it, and I think most of us convinced ourselves we did. Well, that’s over for me. Two decades has given me perspective and helped me realize I don’t like this movie.
I know I don’t speak for everyone, but 20 years hasn’t been long enough to wash the memory of this movie from my mind.
‘The Bourne Identity
Release date: June 14, 2002
With James Bond on the decline in the early 2000s, and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise recently dumping “M:I-2” on us, I think we all owe the movie world a sincere “thank you” for giving us “The Bourne Identity” in 2002.
The movie went on to make nearly $215 million worldwide and spawned three sequels and a spin-off. Some of the sequels are better than others, but the original may still be the best even 20 years later.
This movie, based on the Robert Ludlum book series, quietly arrived in theaters in June of 2002 and took us all by storm.
‘Signs’
Release date: Aug. 2, 2002
M. Night Shyamalan became a favorite of many moviegoers thanks to his 1999 hit “The Sixth Sense.” Then some weren’t too happy with his sophomore effort, “Unbreakable.” Then in 2002, he released “Signs” and it divided audiences. For me, I was on the side that really liked it. I mean, “liked” it more than a friend.
To this day I still think “Signs” is one of Shyamalan’s best films. It has its missteps and awkward moments, but overall I loved the storytelling. Joaquin Phoenix steals every scene he’s onscreen, and the use of the camera in the storytelling is subtly brilliant.
I know “Signs” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’d be more than happy to fill you in on some of the more nuanced reasons I love the film. I may not convert you, but I do believe I can at least get you to appreciate it.
My love for this movie has lasted 20 years, and I think it’ll continue for another 20 and then after that.
‘The Ring’

That’s right, it’s been 20 years that the little girl climbing out of the TV has been haunting your nightmares.
The remake of the Japanese horror film “The Ring” changed the Hollywood horror movie industry and started what was known as the J-Horror craze, which gave us movies like “The Grudge,” “One Missed Call,” and “Dark Water.”
‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’
Release date: Nov. 15, 2002
There are so many Harry Potter movies released over multiple years, but the second installment hit us in 2002. “The Chamber of Secrets” was a fun addition to the Harry Potter film canon and was still innocent enough to be good for some of the younger audiences.
Can you believe it’s been 20 years since we met Moaning Myrtle and saw the Basilisk?
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’
Release date: Dec. 18, 2002
The year 2002 kicked off multiple franchises, but it was also full of second installments of massive franchises. The biggest of that year may have been “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.“
“The Lord of the Rings” film franchise took the world by storm, and “The Two Towers” wowed audiences and left them salivating for the epic conclusion — but they had to wait for another year before they’d get it.
It’s now been 20 years since you were all left in limbo for a year after the credits rolled on “The Two Towers.”
The film had an incredible cast with leads DiCaprio and Tom Hanks at the forefront, and maestro Steven Spielberg behind the camera.
Twenty years later, the movie is still a fun film filled with twists, turns and likable scoundrels. It was a great way to cap off a great year of movies.

It seems most of us headed to the theater to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home” recently. The film was a blast and is the third installment of the Tom Holland Spider-Man franchise. But none of that would have been possible without 2002’s “Spider-Man.“
While 1989’s “Batman” changed superhero movies, it was “Spider-Man” that showed the world superhero movies could be entertaining and well-made. The film really kicked off our current cinematic love affair with superheroes.
It’s been 20 years since “Spider-Man” crawled into theaters, and in those two decades we’ve seen eight different movies, three different actors take on the role, and then got to watch all of them reunite in the latest offering.
(You don’t get to call “spoiler” on that. You had your chance to see the movie.)
‘Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones’

Believe it or not, it has been 20 years since we learned how much Anakin Skywalker hates sand. The second installment of the Star Wars prequels, “Attack of the Clones,” flew into theaters two decades ago and none of us has ever been the same.
With “Phantom Menace,” we were all just so excited to see a new Star Wars movie that we ignored some things. Then “Attack of the Clones” arrived and we all wanted to like it, and I think most of us convinced ourselves we did. Well, that’s over for me. Two decades has given me perspective and helped me realize I don’t like this movie.
I know I don’t speak for everyone, but 20 years hasn’t been long enough to wash the memory of this movie from my mind.
‘The Bourne Identity
Release date: June 14, 2002
With James Bond on the decline in the early 2000s, and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise recently dumping “M:I-2” on us, I think we all owe the movie world a sincere “thank you” for giving us “The Bourne Identity” in 2002.
The movie went on to make nearly $215 million worldwide and spawned three sequels and a spin-off. Some of the sequels are better than others, but the original may still be the best even 20 years later.
This movie, based on the Robert Ludlum book series, quietly arrived in theaters in June of 2002 and took us all by storm.
‘Signs’
Release date: Aug. 2, 2002
M. Night Shyamalan became a favorite of many moviegoers thanks to his 1999 hit “The Sixth Sense.” Then some weren’t too happy with his sophomore effort, “Unbreakable.” Then in 2002, he released “Signs” and it divided audiences. For me, I was on the side that really liked it. I mean, “liked” it more than a friend.
To this day I still think “Signs” is one of Shyamalan’s best films. It has its missteps and awkward moments, but overall I loved the storytelling. Joaquin Phoenix steals every scene he’s onscreen, and the use of the camera in the storytelling is subtly brilliant.
I know “Signs” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’d be more than happy to fill you in on some of the more nuanced reasons I love the film. I may not convert you, but I do believe I can at least get you to appreciate it.
My love for this movie has lasted 20 years, and I think it’ll continue for another 20 and then after that.
‘The Ring’
Release date: Oct. 18, 2002
That’s right, it’s been 20 years that the little girl climbing out of the TV has been haunting your nightmares.
The remake of the Japanese horror film “The Ring” changed the Hollywood horror movie industry and started what was known as the J-Horror craze, which gave us movies like “The Grudge,” “One Missed Call,” and “Dark Water.”
‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’
Release date: Nov. 15, 2002
There are so many Harry Potter movies released over multiple years, but the second installment hit us in 2002. “The Chamber of Secrets” was a fun addition to the Harry Potter film canon and was still innocent enough to be good for some of the younger audiences.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’

The year 2002 kicked off multiple franchises, but it was also full of second installments of massive franchises. The biggest of that year may have been “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.“
“The Lord of the Rings” film franchise took the world by storm, and “The Two Towers” wowed audiences and left them salivating for the epic conclusion — but they had to wait for another year before they’d get it.
It’s now been 20 years since you were all left in limbo for a year after the credits rolled on “The Two Towers.”
The film had an incredible cast with leads DiCaprio and Tom Hanks at the forefront, and maestro Steven Spielberg behind the camera.
Twenty years later, the movie is still a fun film filled with twists, turns and likable scoundrels. It was a great way to cap off a great year of movies.

With the release window out for Hogwarts Legacy, fans of the franchise have high expectations from the game. Here’s a list of things you’ve already seen in the movie and books, set to return in Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy is set in the late 1800s, way before Harry Potter’s birth and Voldemort’s rise to power. Moreover, Albus Dumbledore was born in 1881, and the professor’s best friend while growing up, Gellert Grindelwald in 1883.
Since the game is based in Hogwarts, there are a lot of things that you might have seen in the movies already.
Characters in Hogwarts Legacy
With the game set in a different era, you will not see familiar faces. But, there are still a few exceptions and they are listed below.
The Sorting Hat
Crafted by the founders of the Hogwarts — Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, the crafting hat sorts students during their first year into the four houses.
The Sorting Hat was put into place right after Hogwarts was founded in 990 AD, and the sorting tradition has continued ever since.
Harry was able to persuade the Sorting Hat to get into the Gryffindor house.

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington
Popularly known as Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost prefers students to address him as Sir Nicholas. Nick was born in the 1400s and has been roaming the hallways of Hogwarts ever since.
Although, it’s likely that you may get to interact with Nick only if you’re in Gryffindor, as the ghost belongs to the house of the brave.
As expected, Nick is still unable to join the Headless Hunt and continues to talk about it in the latest trailer.

Fat Lady
The Fat Lady is a portrait that guards the entrance to the Gryffindor common room. Gryffindor students trying to enter this room need to tell the password when prompted by the Fat Lady.
She was a part of several movies, primarily seen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when Sirius Black attacks her.

Professor Binns
Though Professor Binns was never a part of the Harry Potter movies, they had a few cameos in the books and will be a part of Hogwarts Legacy as well. The professor died in their staff room and continued to teach despite being a ghost.
Due to their old age and love of storytelling, the professor was also regarded as the most boring at Hogwarts, putting students to sleep regularly.

Hogwarts Courtyard
It is the same courtyard where Professor Umbridge fires Trelawney in front of the entire school. Additionally, the Weasley twins – Fred and George made their grand exit from the school by flying over this courtyard in Order of the Phoenix.

Prefects’ Bathroom
The Prefects’ Bathroom, as the name suggests, was restricted to use by the chosen prefects in Hogwarts. It’s on the fifth floor and Harry had Moaning Myrtle’s company, while he was trying to decipher the message in the golden egg, in the bathroom.
Cedric Diggory suggested Harry visit this bathroom to clear his head in Goblet of Fire.

Forbidden Forest
The Forbidden Forest or the Dark Forest will be a part of the game. As seen in the first two Harry Potter movies, it is filled with weird mysteries and creatures.
Although Firenze isn’t around to save you, other centaurs were seen in the trailer.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank
Gringotts is regarded as the safest place in the wizarding world, with Hogwarts school being a close second. This is the same place where Hagrid took Harry in the first movie to collect the Sorcerer’s Stone.
We also see Harry break into the bank in the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The trio enters the bank to find and destroy one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes stored in this bank’s vault.

Magical Beasts You Can Ride, Room of Requirement, and Other Activities From the Movies
Apart from the familiar characters and places, there are several exciting things that were shown. Here are a few of them that caught our attention:
Magical Beasts – Can You Ride Magical Beasts in Hogwarts Legacy?
According to the game’s FAQ, players can tame, mount and ride some of the beasts in Hogwarts Legacy. So far, we’ve seen the main character riding a hippogriff in the trailer.
Harry rides a hippogriff with the name Buckbeak in the third movie and gifts the creature to Sirius Black, setting him free from the Azkaban Prison.
Further, we can also see a few thestrals, winged horses, that are only visible to people who’ve seen death. Dumbledore’s Army rides these creatures to come to the rescue of Sirius in the Order of the Phoenix.
On top of this, we can also see a niffler, a magical beast with a long snout like a platypus. This creature was a menace in the Fantastic Beasts movie and was fond of shiny things, especially jewelry.

The Room of Requirement in Hogwarts Legacy

The room senses what you need and will be a place where players can brew potions, hone their wand skills, and further dive into customizations.

Samuel L. Jackson has revealed that Nick Fury will appear in multiple Marvel movies after his starring role in Secret Invasion.
Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast (thanks to comingsoon.net for the spot), Jackson confirmed that the former SHIELD director will guest star in The Marvels, as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, in 2023.
Jackson’s Fury will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Secret Invasion, one of Marvel Studios’ 2022 Disney Plus offerings. But, given that Fury has appeared in numerous Marvel movies, it was only a matter of time before he made his big screen comeback.
The last time we saw Fury, he was enjoying a ‘vacation’ on a Skrull spaceship in Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene. Now, though, we know we’ll be seeing him appear in three Marvel Phase 4 projects over the next 12 months.
Initially speaking about his time in the MCU, Jackson said: “Well, you know, it’s kind of strange when someone tells you they’re going to give you a nine-picture deal. You know, you go ‘How long am I going to stay alive to make nine pictures?’ Because it used to take a while to make a movie. It still kind of does, but people make two or three of them at a time. In the Marvel Universe…it’s crazy.
“When I was in London just now, it was [Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania], and [The Marvels] was happening, and we were getting ready to do [Secret Invasion],” Jackson added moments later. “So it was like, three Marvel movies on one lot. I was kind of running around from place to place.”
Secret Invasion is one of four MCU TV shows set to land on Disney Plus before the year is out. Moon Knight will lead the way when it arrives on March 30, with Ms Marvel (June 8) and She-Hulk (launch date TBC) set to follow, too.
Analysis: why will Nick Fury appear in Ant-Man 3?

Nick Fury’s likely appearance in The Marvels won’t come as a big surprise. The founder of The Avengers was a supporting character in 2019’s Captain Marvel, which starred Brie Larson as the titular hero. With The Marvels lined up as a sequel to that superhero flick, it would be a strange move if Fury didn’t feature in the follow-up movie.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, though, doesn’t initially seem like a movie where Fury would fit in. He’s never met Ant-Man or the Wasp. He wasn’t around for Avengers: Endgame to see how they used time travel to reverse the effects of the Blip either, because Fury was one of those snapped out of existence by Thanos. And, unless The Marvels’ plot ties into Ant-Man 3, he may not fully grasp the fact that a time traveling villain – i.e. Kang the Conqueror – is on the way to install himself as the MCU’s next big bad. Fury isn’t as well connected as he was previously, so he won’t have been able to keep abreast of every villainous situation that’s come and gone (or set to arrive) on Earth in recent times.
Still, we’d expect a man of Fury’s ilk to take more than a passing interest if a new major antagonist turns up and threatens to up-end the status quo. He set The Avengers Initiative up for a reason – i.e. the protect Earth from any and all threats. If Kang presents a clear and present danger to life on our world, you can bet on Fury taking a lead role in Earth’s defense against any kind of supervillain.
It’s likely that Marvel will be disappointed to hear that Jackson has confirmed his character’s involvement in both movies. This is Samuel L Jackson, though, so he’s not likely to care much (if at all) about spoiling where Fury will turn up.
He’s not the only one, either. Bill Murray, who will play a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has already hinted that he’ll play a bad guy in the threequel. Jonathan Majors, who played one of Kang’s variants in Loki’s season 1 finale, will be on chief villain duties as Kang in Ant-Man 3, though.

He wasn’t around for Avengers: Endgame to see how they used time travel to reverse the effects of the Blip either, because Fury was one of those snapped out of existence by Thanos. And, unless The Marvels’ plot ties into Ant-Man 3, he may not fully grasp the fact that a time traveling villain – i.e. Kang the Conqueror – is on the way to install himself as the MCU’s next big bad. Fury isn’t as well connected as he was previously, so he won’t have been able to keep abreast of every villainous situation that’s come and gone (or set to arrive) on Earth in recent times.
Still, we’d expect a man of Fury’s ilk to take more than a passing interest if a new major antagonist turns up and threatens to up-end the status quo. He set The Avengers Initiative up for a reason – i.e. the protect Earth from any and all threats. If Kang presents a clear and present danger to life on our world, you can bet on Fury taking a lead role in Earth’s defense against any kind of supervillain.
It’s likely that Marvel will be disappointed to hear that Jackson has confirmed his character’s involvement in both movies. This is Samuel L Jackson, though, so he’s not likely to care much (if at all) about spoiling where Fury will turn up.
He’s not the only one, either. Bill Murray, who will play a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has already hinted that he’ll play a bad guy in the threequel. Jonathan Majors, who played one of Kang’s variants in Loki’s season 1 finale, will be on chief villain duties as Kang in Ant-Man 3, though.

The streaming era has changed that calculus — a novelty-hungry home-viewing audience doesn’t much care about the season, so more release houses are slipping interesting movies onto VOD or even bringing them to theaters during a season when they’ll face less competition.
And then there are always the little gems that were never intended for a blockbuster audience, and the compelling surprises we weren’t expecting would move us. So even though it’s still early in the year, we’ve started a survey of which 2022 releases have excited us most, from big action-adventures to small indie genre movies. All of these are worth a watch.
Below you’ll find entries are in reverse order of release: The most recent releases are first, so it’ll be easy to see the newest additions to this list. We’ll be updating it throughout 2022. We’ll also be doing the same for the best games, the best anime, and the best TV shows of 2022.

The new slasher X is the best Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie of 2022. Set in 1979, writer-director Ti West’s loving homage to all things exploitation cinema follows a porno director and his cast as they head to a small farm in Texas to shoot their next movie. Unfortunately, the farm’s owners don’t approve one bit of the filmmakers’ immoral ways, and that results in a lot of blood and guts. There’s sex, murder, quite a few uncomfortable scenes, and every minute of it is a film-grainy, old-school blast. —Austen Goslin

The Long Walk

Laos’ first and only female film director, Mattie Do, makes ghost stories: movies where characters interact with the dead and learn from them, but pay a price for that knowledge. Some of the themes of her debut feature Chanthaly (which she’s posted on YouTube) and her followup, Dearest Sister (streaming on Shudder) get fuller, richer development in The Long Walk, a genre mashup that’s part time-travel story and part serial-killer story, but still keenly involved with the spirits of the dead, and how they both express their desires and enable the desires of living people.
A Lao hermit living in a tech-oriented future periodically travels 50 years into the past and intervenes in events in his own traumatic childhood, with the help of the ghost of a woman who died in the nearby forest when he was a kid. These are bold, striking elements that don’t entirely seem to fit together, but The Long Walk is exquisitely constructed in a way that reveals its puzzlebox methods slowly, building toward an emotional end that ties all its genres, timelines, and threads together in a startling, impressive way. —Tasha Robinson
MAPPA’s adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, Gege Akutami’s supernatural dark fantasy action manga, quickly earned its place alongside the best anime series to air in 2020 and 2021. It comes as no surprise, then, that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 — the feature-length prologue to the series helmed by returning director Sunghoo Park — would carry on that momentum even further. Set one year before the events of the anime, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 follows the story of Yuta Okkotsu; an unlucky soul who, much like series protagonist Yuji Itadori, finds himself the unwilling host of the immensely destructive cursed spirit in the form of his deceased childhood friend Rika. Following a grisly massacre, Yuta is taken under the wing of Jujutsu sorcerer (and noted anime heathrob) Satoru Gojo, who teaches him how to hone his supernatural powers in humanity’s ongoing fight against cursed spirits. As to be expected, the action is electrifying; with swift punches, bright flashing power moves, and grotesque hulking enemies.
Yuta’s personal journey parallels well with that of Yuji, making for a relatable protagonist who’s easy to cheer on and root for. Though the movie as whole is the kind of “prequel” that benefits from prior knowledge of the series it precludes, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is nevertheless an exciting watch that more than merits inclusion among the best animated movies to come out of 2022. —Toussaint Egan

Turning Red

It’s hard to look back fondly at the painfully awkward middle-school years, but Pixar’s Turning Red considers the tumultuous ups and downs of early adolescence without flinching, and with an astonishing amount of love. Domee Shi, who directed 2018’s Pixar short Bao, makes her theatrical debut with this one-of-a-kind movie that envelopes quirky magic, cultural specificity, and most of all, an absolute love for young girlhood in all its messy glory.
Thirteen-year-old Mei discovers that she turns into a gigantic red panda when she’s overwhelmed by strong emotion — a quirk all the women of her family have been burdened with since ancient times. Mei struggles to control the panda just as other family members have, but she also starts to discover her own identity outside of her family, and to embrace that side of herself. The giant-red-panda-sized emotions she feels at the cusp of adulthood translate into giant emotions for the audience, who can look back on that pivotal time of their lives where everything felt like so much all at once. Turning Red balances those deep emotions with some charming humor and genuine sweetness, and it’s one of the best and most unique films in Pixar’s canon. —Petrana Radulovic
Matt Reeves’ reboot of the Dark Knight isn’t as bold as it might be, but it sure is stylish. A long, slow-burning mystery in the vein of David Fincher’s Seven, The Batman infuses a familiar story with darkly beautiful imagery and magnetic performances from stars Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz. When it isn’t too enamored with ideas already explored in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Batman lays exciting groundwork for a richer, stranger sort of Batman movie, which will hopefully materialize as a sequel reuniting everyone who made this one such a pleasure to watch. —Joshua Rivera

The latest from Columbus director Kogonada, After Yang is a melancholy science fiction movie that balances the question of how we should think about artificial life with the more intriguing question about how it should think about us. Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith star as adoptive parents raising a young Chinese girl, with the help of a “technosapien” — an android programmed as her language tutor, cultural advisor, and big brother. When his systems fail, the family goes through exactly what they’d experience at the death of any family member, with the added question of what his death tells them about their lives and relationships. It’s a small, quiet, meditative film, but it’s visually rich and packed with ideas about prejudice and assumptions, cultural assimilation, and the way everyone is navigating an inner life that would astonish everyone around them. —TR

August at Akiko’sChristopher Makoto Yogi turns this ghost story into a slow-burn meditation on death, memory, and what lives on after we depart. As the elderly patriarch of a fragmented family (Steve Iwamoto, excellent in his first lead feature role) nears the end of his life, he’s visited by family in the present and ghosts from the past, including his long-deceased wife (Constance Wu). Intergenerational tensions arise as the ghosts of past conflicts return, too — squabbles and fights between family members long estranged, and historical conflicts around Hawaii’s path to statehood.
I Was A Simple Man takes us on this journey across different time periods and with evocative use of surrealism and dream aesthetics. A beautiful movie filled with stunning images of Hawaii’s gorgeous landscapes and rich textures, it won the Made in Hawaii Award for Best Feature at the 2021 Hawaii International Film Festival. I Was A Simple Man is an unforgettable experience that ventures to capture the final days of one life on Earth. —Pete Volk
Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac has been adapted for film many times in many ways, including as the modern-day Steve Martin/Daryl Hannah rom-com Roxanne in 1987, and the Toshirô Mifune action-drama Samurai Saga in 1959. As with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, its story about unrequited love (and arguably, complete romantic cowardice) resonates in any age, and crosses cultures easily. But there’s never been a production quite like this lavish movie adaptation of Erica Schmidt’s musical version of the play. Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage stars as Cyrano, a French soldier and poet in love with his childhood friend Roxanne (Swallow star Haley Bennett), but afraid to tell her because he’s certain she’ll reject him. When she falls for Christian (Luce’s Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a handsome newcomer in Cyrano’s regiment, Cyrano agrees to ghost-write Christian’s love letters to her, mostly so he can finally, fully express himself, even if she doesn’t know it’s him.
Joe Wright’s production is lush and glowing, with a soft visual warmth courtesy of his longtime collaborator Seamus McGarvey, cinematographer on his Atonement and Anna Karenina, among other titles. Dinklage’s singing isn’t very strong, but he still feels like he was born to play this pained, passionate swashbuckler, and the central trio all deliver fantastic performances that make this an authentic tearjerker. It’s a big-hearted project, full of outsized emotions that hit home powerfully. Don’t watch this right after a breakup, or after someone you’ve secretly longed for marries someone else. —TR

Hellbender tells the story of Izzy, a teenager who lives isolated in the woods with only her mother, who says Izzy has a debilitating disease and can’t be around other people. That isn’t quite true. The movie delicately balances Izzy’s perspective and her mother’s, working as a movie both about the struggles of adolescence and about the inherent terror of trying to raise a child well. But for all the virtues of its story, Hellbender’s greatest feat is how gorgeous it looks.
Created by a filmmaking family who produce, direct, and star in the movie, Hellbender is an early contender for 2022’s most visually striking horror film. Directors John and Zelda Adams and Toby Poser use forests, and the movie’s many mystic visions, for both serene beauty and creeping terror, swapping effortlessly between the two to match their characters’ fears and discoveries. —AG
The protagonist of Steven Soderbergh’s tech-crime thriller Kimi moves through the world like she’s tapped directly into a power line, and is desperate to burn off all the excess energy. The movie operates at that same level of speed and ferocity. Essentially an internet-age take on Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window by way of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and Brian De Palma’s Blow Out (among many other cinematic touchstones), Kimi follows a Seattle tech worker who stumbles across evidence of a crime, and draws some dangerous attention when she tries to report it. Soderbergh and Panic Room screenwriter David Koepp strip that story down to its basics, jumping in and out of the action in a shockingly tight and stylish 89 minutes. The plot is simple and the ethos is go-go-go, which makes the film’s verve contagious and the action breathless. It isn’t deep, but it sure is fun. —TR
Oscar-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi returns with another stunner, painting a beautiful, nuanced picture of a man in crisis. Amir Jadidi is phenomenal as Rahim, a charming man who simply can not get his life together, no matter how much his friends and family love him. When his girlfriend finds an abandoned handbag with gold coins inside, Rahim considers using the money to pay off his debt while out on a brief furlough from debtor’s prison. But after a series of events leads him to return the bag and money to a woman who says she’s the original owner, he becomes the subject of a local media frenzy for his charitable act.
A moving, challenging story about the difficulties of trying to do the right thing in an unjust world, A Hero is also a study of how difficult it is to pin down clear motives or objective truth, especially when facing a story filtered through layers of personal and organizational agendas. Even the truth about your own actions and motivations can be difficult to sort through. And if you do actually find it, is it actually for navigating the world? A Hero is a stirring, unforgettable work that should not be missed. —PV
Just when you might think Disney’s permanently locked up the coveted title of “Best Animated Musical Rendition of the Beauty and the Beast Story,” along comes Mamoru Hosada’s Belle, which gives the “tale as old as time” a thrilling futurist spin. This anime feature from the director of Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Mirai re-imagines the classic fable as a conflict in a virtual-reality wonderland, where everyone’s digital avatars reflect their innermost selves. When withdrawn, mourning high-schooler Suzu enters the VR world, she becomes a beloved pop star, center of an energetic fandom — and equally energetic dismissal and criticism. Then she becomes obsessed with a mystery user whose avatar is a powerful, monstrous beast, and she starts trying to uncover his secrets.
This is a dizzying story that sometimes overreaches — Hosada is trying to take in everything from the addictive but destructive nature of online life to the importance of individual human connection, and there are so many threads (and romances, and secrets) that they aren’t all fully fleshed out. But it’s a heartfelt film full of big emotional beats and stunning animated sequences, and even if it doesn’t answer all the questions it raises, it at least seems determined to bring a familiar story to a bolder, brighter, more ambitious stage. —TR

This anime feature from the director of Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Mirai re-imagines the classic fable as a conflict in a virtual-reality wonderland, where everyone’s digital avatars reflect their innermost selves. When withdrawn, mourning high-schooler Suzu enters the VR world, she becomes a beloved pop star, center of an energetic fandom — and equally energetic dismissal and criticism. Then she becomes obsessed with a mystery user whose avatar is a powerful, monstrous beast, and she starts trying to uncover his secrets.
This is a dizzying story that sometimes overreaches — Hosada is trying to take in everything from the addictive but destructive nature of online life to the importance of individual human connection, and there are so many threads (and romances, and secrets) that they aren’t all fully fleshed out. But it’s a heartfelt film full of big emotional beats and stunning animated sequences, and even if it doesn’t answer all the questions it raises, it at least seems determined to bring a familiar story to a bolder, brighter, more ambitious stage. —TR

I just did an interview and I told the man I was going to lie more so I didn’t repeat myself but I’m going to anyway. The third element in this was to see the pyramids, which was kind of in my silent list. Pavarotti was going to do “Aida” at the pyramids, and Lorne Michaels was going to produce it. And I signed up for that a year and a half early and of course he didn’t, God rest his soul. So winding up on a rooftop in the middle of Los Angeles to shoot that scene was a mild disappointment to me. I still want to see the pyramids.”
