Actress Joey King has opened up about her time on the set of the horror film “The Conjuring,” revealing the physical condition she developed “out of nowhere.”
King played little girl tormented by demons in the 2013 film when she was 12. But in a recent interview on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” she admitted that the things she experienced made her “shudder.”
The actress said she suddenly developed an unexpected blood disorder while playing the character Christine Perron.
“It was pretty intense. Some weird stuff happened on the set, along with the movie being scary,” she revealed. “It’s true, I developed this bizarre, rare, out-of-nowhere blood disorder, and basically, my body, like all the red platelets from my body were like drained. They were just gone.”
The condition was so grave King went to the hospital before each taping to ensure she didn’t need a blood transfusion.
King had a “high risk of internal bleeding.” The actress said that “every day before work and after work,” she had to “go to the hospital, get my blood taken.”
Barrymore became spooked by King’s story when the 22-year-old revealed that the condition suddenly stopped as soon as she was finished filming “The Conjuring.”
“Then, all of a sudden, I got home, and I’ve never had a problem with my blood since,” she commented. “Every time I think about it, I just shudder a little bit.”
In another interview in 2020, King told crass radio host Howard Stern that the bizarre condition was discovered when bruises randomly began appearing on her body during filming.
“In the [movie], when the mom gets possessed, she gets all these bruises on her,” King disclosed, saying that it was during those scenes that she noticed “a lot of bruises show up on my body.”
King, who comes from a mixed Jewish and Christian background, said she realized her experience was nothing but normal.
“The Conjuring” franchise was written by Christian screenwriters Chad and Carey Hills. Although many Christians think scary movies are evil and should be avoided, the writers maintain that their films are to show how faith overcomes evil.
“For us, it’s very simple; we love doing true stories of where good conquers evil. ‘Conjuring 2’ is a story told through the eyes of believers, whose strongest weapon is their faith in God. Our film allows believers and non-believers to travel their journey with them, and in some ways, maybe affect someone who is on the edge of faith, and somehow give them the strength they need,” the couple told The Christian Post in a past interview.
They added: “For us, other than one’s own faith in Jesus, the symbol of the cross radiates that faith for those who hold it, hang it and even tattoo it! Some may have a Bible in their home and think they’re protected. But without studying it and believing, it’s like just any other book. Same with the cross. One must believe in what it represents.”

Emmri was a fan of The ACE Family
Emmri, who sadly passed away in February 2022, was described as “brave, bold, gentle, patient and exuberant with a fierce love for life and those around her”.
Emmri’s mother Chelsey made it her mission to educate others on the multiple disabilities her daughter suffered as a result of the CMV virus. Over on TikTok, Chelsey documented the hardships Emmri had to face, attracting more than one million followers.
Emmri enjoyed watching thrillers and scary movies but also loved YouTube, including Baby Reborn shows and The ACE Family. She also had a passion for travelling and often took trips with her family.

ACE Family reach out to Emmri
Before her death, Catherine and Austin McBroom, of The ACE Family, were able to reach out to Emmri and her mother.
In a new video, Catherine details how one of her supporters had made her aware of Emmri’s health issues, prompting The ACE Family to get in contact with Chelsey.
Catherine told subscribers: “As soon as I watched the [TikTok] video, I was like ‘oh my God’. Something about her is so special, I couldn’t understand why I was so invested.”
After talking to Chelsey, The ACE Family asked whether they could visit her in Michigan but, because of the 11-year-old’s severe health conditions, Chelsey couldn’t accept visitors so Austin and Catherine set up a FaceTime call instead.
Catherine says the call was one of Emmri’s last conscious moments.
Recalling the experience, Austin shared: “You could see her eyes brighten up when she saw us. She was resting and when she saw us her eyes got big. You can tell she was trying to say so much, but obviously couldn’t.”

Before Blu-ray, before streaming, before VHS, film used to be on something called film. I collected it.
“Dracula,” “Frankenstein,” “The Deadly Mantis” — as a kid, horror films were my obsession — could be purchased in abridged 8mm versions, viewable with a home projector. Yes, I am that old.
“Nosferatu” wasn’t exactly unknown, then. But it wasn’t super-known, either.
In film histories, it was mentioned — in passing — as one of many expressionist German fantasy films to follow in the wake of the landmark “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1919). Or else, as the crude early work of an important director, F.W. Murnau.
For horror buffs, it was mostly an historical footnote. “The first film version of Dracula.” The one before Bela Lugosi.
I, on the other hand, doted on it. The swarming rats! The cadaverous vampire, with rodent’s teeth and pointed ears! And played by an actor named Max Schreck — whose very name means “terror.” Delicious!
I was, it turned out, ahead of my time.
“It’s a remarkable film,” said film scholar David J. Skal, whose book “Hollywood Gothic” is the definitive account of “Dracula’s” journey through stage, film, and pop culture.
“It took a long time for it to get the kind of audiences it has now,” he said.

Here, there and everywhere
Some 50 years later, “Nosferatu” has entered the cultural bloodstream like few other movies. It may be the best-known, most-seen film of the silent era — more familiar than Charlie Chaplin, “The Great Train Robbery,” or Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock. “Nosferatu” is the one silent film that transcends silence. Young people who might regard subtitles as a deal-breaker make an exception for this film.
“There’s a timelessness to it,” said Bryce Bullins, who teaches courses on horror movies at the University of Cincinnati.
“Even though it’s approaching 100 years old, it still feels very unnerving,” he said.
“Nosferatu” has been referenced endlessly. “Max Shrek” was a villain in “Batman Returns” (1992). There was a Nosferatu character in “Spongebob Squarepants.” There was a “Nosferatu” song by Blue Öyster Cult. There have been “Nosferatu” plays, musicals, and operas, “Nosferatu” albums, “Nosferatu” action figures, “Nosferatu” beer. The 1979 TV version of Stephen King’s ” ‘Salem’s Lot” featured a vampire that was — pun intended — a dead ringer.
“Nosferatu,” a novel by Jim Shepard, imagined the creation of the film, while “Shadow of the Vampire,” a 2000 film, speculated that Max Schreck (John Malkovich) was in fact a real vampire. “Nosferatu” was remade in 1979 by Werner Herzog; there was another remake in 2018. A “NOS4A2” horror series ran on AMC from 2019 to 2020.
The original 1922 “Nosferatu” score by Hans Erdmann, long forgotten, was unearthed in the 1990s by Library of Congress musicologist Gillian Anderson and has been played at screenings; meanwhile numerous composers from numerous genres — jazz, rock, avant-garde — have tried their own hands at writing music.
“It’s so unique and interesting and scary,” said Bob Lanzetti, guitarist for the Grammy-winning funk-jazz collective Snarky Puppy. His “Nosferatu” score, for 10 musicians, can be heard as part of a series called “Fantastic Fest” that is being screened at Alamo Drafthouse in New York on March 13.
“I’m a huge fan of 20th century classical music in general, and I wanted to bring that kind of element to it,” said Lanzetti, originally from Brick. “I had never written such a large-scale work. It’s 90 minutes of non-stop sound. That in itself is daunting. I wrote for a string quartet for a few different scenes.”
Late-bloomer
Some movies are like a shot of adrenaline: Their effect, as in the case of “Gone with the Wind” or “Star Wars,” is immediate.
Others are more like Contac capsules. Their medicine takes a while to kick in. “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Blade Runner,” “A Christmas Story,” “Office Space” only found their audience gradually, over a period of years, even decades.
“Nosferatu” may be the sleeper of sleepers.
“I don’t know when it turned that corner,” said Sandy Frieden, who teaches German cinema at the University of Houston. “It could have to do with how film scholars were looking at it.”
Certainly, it didn’t impress critics when it first shown outside Germany. “It combines the ridiculous and the horrid,” said a British critic of the 1920s. “Rather more of a soporific than a thriller,” said the New York Times. “There was at least one man who dozed audibly.”
The person who hated it more than anyone was Charlotte Stoker — widow of Bram Stoker, author of “Dracula,” on which the film was loosely based. She did her best to ensure that no one would ever see it again.
“Florence Stoker just went ballistic,” Skal said.
“Nosferatu” had been made without permission — and without royalty payments. The characters’ names were changed, but that didn’t fool the widow. She pursued her case through the German courts, finally winning a ruling that all “Nosferatu” prints and negatives should be destroyed.
“She refused to see it,” Skal said. “The violation of her rights was all she cared about. Florence went to her grave in the late 1930s confident that ‘Nosferatu’ would never rise from its tomb.”

Alas for her. And lucky for us. “Nosferatu” — court order or not — continued to circulate, mostly on the down-low, through the 1920s and ’30s.
And that’s just part of an odd history that began even before the film was released.
It was a low-budget project, made by a fledgling company called Prana Films, named for the Hindu concept of “prana” (universal energy) that was co-founded by an occultist, Albin Grau.
He evidently believed in vampires. During World War I, he said, he’d met a man whose father had become one. “The teeth were long and sharp, and protruded from the mouth,” he was told.
As set and costume designer for “Nosferatu,” he infused the film with all kinds of occult symbols. Take a close look at the letter Count Orlok — the film’s Dracula character — is reading at the dinner table. “The back page of the letter shows a confusion of numbers, legible and illegible letters,” reads the original script. “The holy number seven is repeated several times. In between, cabbalistic signs.”
The strangeness of the film, the strangeness of its backstory, and the strangeness of the actor who played the vampire (“Schreck” was in fact the unfortunate man’s real name), has made “Nosferatu” a curiosity over the years. It wasn’t much of a jump to “Shadow of the Vampire’s” jokey premise that he was in fact a bona-fide vampire, moonlighting as an actor.

What’s the expression?
But the real significance of “Nosferatu: eine Symphonie des Grauens” (“Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”) may be as one of the German screen’s peak examples of expressionism — an approach in which visual elements like sets, lighting and camera angles play an equal role with the actors in creating emotion.
“Caligari” is usually held to be the poster-child of film expressionism. Literally — since the diseased-looking sets were all painted canvas.
“Nosferatu” was more subtle. It used real locations, but transformed them with the camera. Low-angle shots of the vampire, as he stalked victims on a ship, made him look overpowering. Elongated shadows — never mind that vampires don’t cast shadows — made him seem to seep out of the very walls.
“There’s this use of chiaroscuro, the shadows, the use of black and white, that is very strange and unsettling,” Frieden said. “There are lot of tacky films you see right now which are supposed to be horror, but they’re really shock. They’re not like your nightmares. This film is nightmarish.”
“Nosferatu” had a promising launch — complete with a “Feast of Nosferatu” theme party — at the Berlin Zoological Garden on March 4, 1922. But by August, Mrs. Stoker’s lawyers had swung into action.
“Nosferatu” was not destroyed, as Mrs. Stoker wished. But it was curbed. Thereafter it crept into town — much as the vampire does in the film — sneaking into London in 1928 and New York the year after. Then, in 1931, “Dracula” starring Bela Lugosi as a fully legal vampire in formalwear and a cape, relegated “Nosferatu” to the dustbin of film history. Or so it seemed.
“It wasn’t available,” Skal said. “It wasn’t seen in America. It was only after World War II that prints started popping up.”
Boomers and bloodsuckers
By the 1960s, a new generation had become horror crazy. Old-movie showings on TV, and magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland, had turned many kids into connoisseurs. Gradually, “Nosferatu” was rediscovered by the young. One of its new admirers was the dean of hipsters, Jack Kerouac.
“In a strange wool cap a thin hawknosed man opens the big oaken door,” Kerouac wrote in 1960, in his inimitable beat prose. “The audience realizes this is Count Nosferatu himself! Ugh!
“The castle has tile floors: — somehow there’s more evil in those tile floors than in the dripping dust of later Bela Lugosi castle where women with spiders on their shoulders dragged dead muslin gowns across the stone. They are the tile floors of a Byzantine Alexandrian Transylvanian throat-ogre.”
As the film became more accessible, as 8mm film gave way to videotape and DVDs and streaming, as younger filmmakers and musicians began to pay it homage, “Nosferatu” was suddenly everywhere. Like the film’s vampire — which springs out of his coffin like a jack-in-the-box — “Nosferatu” kept popping up.
“It’s really quite remarkable that here we are, 100 years later, celebrating it,” Skal said. “It was kind of hobbled for a while, but the strength of the film won out. I’ve seen it with live audiences, and the film still gives people the creeps.”
One screening, in particular, stays in his memory: at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York.
“When Count Orlok makes his first appearance, this collective shudder just rose in the audience,” he said. “It’s exactly what Bram Stoker would have wanted.”

“It’s a remarkable film,” said film scholar David J. Skal, whose book “Hollywood Gothic” is the definitive account of “Dracula’s” journey through stage, film, and pop culture.
“It took a long time for it to get the kind of audiences it has now,” he said.

Here, there and everywhere
Some 50 years later, “Nosferatu” has entered the cultural bloodstream like few other movies. It may be the best-known, most-seen film of the silent era — more familiar than Charlie Chaplin, “The Great Train Robbery,” or Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock. “Nosferatu” is the one silent film that transcends silence. Young people who might regard subtitles as a deal-breaker make an exception for this film.
“There’s a timelessness to it,” said Bryce Bullins, who teaches courses on horror movies at the University of Cincinnati.
“Even though it’s approaching 100 years old, it still feels very unnerving,” he said.
“Nosferatu” has been referenced endlessly. “Max Shrek” was a villain in “Batman Returns” (1992). There was a Nosferatu character in “Spongebob Squarepants.” There was a “Nosferatu” song by Blue Öyster Cult. There have been “Nosferatu” plays, musicals, and operas, “Nosferatu” albums, “Nosferatu” action figures, “Nosferatu” beer. The 1979 TV version of Stephen King’s ” ‘Salem’s Lot” featured a vampire that was — pun intended — a dead ringer.
“Nosferatu,” a novel by Jim Shepard, imagined the creation of the film, while “Shadow of the Vampire,” a 2000 film, speculated that Max Schreck (John Malkovich) was in fact a real vampire. “Nosferatu” was remade in 1979 by Werner Herzog; there was another remake in 2018. A “NOS4A2” horror series ran on AMC from 2019 to 2020.
The original 1922 “Nosferatu” score by Hans Erdmann, long forgotten, was unearthed in the 1990s by Library of Congress musicologist Gillian Anderson and has been played at screenings; meanwhile numerous composers from numerous genres — jazz, rock, avant-garde — have tried their own hands at writing music.
“It’s so unique and interesting and scary,” said Bob Lanzetti, guitarist for the Grammy-winning funk-jazz collective Snarky Puppy. His “Nosferatu” score, for 10 musicians, can be heard as part of a series called “Fantastic Fest” that is being screened at Alamo Drafthouse in New York on March 13.
“I’m a huge fan of 20th century classical music in general, and I wanted to bring that kind of element to it,” said Lanzetti, originally from Brick. “I had never written such a large-scale work. It’s 90 minutes of non-stop sound. That in itself is daunting. I wrote for a string quartet for a few different scenes.”
Late-bloomer
Some movies are like a shot of adrenaline: Their effect, as in the case of “Gone with the Wind” or “Star Wars,” is immediate.
Others are more like Contac capsules. Their medicine takes a while to kick in. “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Blade Runner,” “A Christmas Story,” “Office Space” only found their audience gradually, over a period of years, even decades.
“Nosferatu” may be the sleeper of sleepers.
“I don’t know when it turned that corner,” said Sandy Frieden, who teaches German cinema at the University of Houston. “It could have to do with how film scholars were looking at it.”
Certainly, it didn’t impress critics when it first shown outside Germany. “It combines the ridiculous and the horrid,” said a British critic of the 1920s. “Rather more of a soporific than a thriller,” said the New York Times. “There was at least one man who dozed audibly.”
The person who hated it more than anyone was Charlotte Stoker — widow of Bram Stoker, author of “Dracula,” on which the film was loosely based. She did her best to ensure that no one would ever see it again.
“Florence Stoker just went ballistic,” Skal said.
“Nosferatu” had been made without permission — and without royalty payments. The characters’ names were changed, but that didn’t fool the widow. She pursued her case through the German courts, finally winning a ruling that all “Nosferatu” prints and negatives should be destroyed.
“She refused to see it,” Skal said. “The violation of her rights was all she cared about. Florence went to her grave in the late 1930s confident that ‘Nosferatu’ would never rise from its tomb.”

Alas for her. And lucky for us. “Nosferatu” — court order or not — continued to circulate, mostly on the down-low, through the 1920s and ’30s.
And that’s just part of an odd history that began even before the film was released.
It was a low-budget project, made by a fledgling company called Prana Films, named for the Hindu concept of “prana” (universal energy) that was co-founded by an occultist, Albin Grau.
He evidently believed in vampires. During World War I, he said, he’d met a man whose father had become one. “The teeth were long and sharp, and protruded from the mouth,” he was told.
As set and costume designer for “Nosferatu,” he infused the film with all kinds of occult symbols. Take a close look at the letter Count Orlok — the film’s Dracula character — is reading at the dinner table. “The back page of the letter shows a confusion of numbers, legible and illegible letters,” reads the original script. “The holy number seven is repeated several times. In between, cabbalistic signs.”
The strangeness of the film, the strangeness of its backstory, and the strangeness of the actor who played the vampire (“Schreck” was in fact the unfortunate man’s real name), has made “Nosferatu” a curiosity over the years. It wasn’t much of a jump to “Shadow of the Vampire’s” jokey premise that he was in fact a bona-fide vampire, moonlighting as an actor.

What’s the expression?
But the real significance of “Nosferatu: eine Symphonie des Grauens” (“Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”) may be as one of the German screen’s peak examples of expressionism — an approach in which visual elements like sets, lighting and camera angles play an equal role with the actors in creating emotion.
“Caligari” is usually held to be the poster-child of film expressionism. Literally — since the diseased-looking sets were all painted canvas.
“Nosferatu” was more subtle. It used real locations, but transformed them with the camera. Low-angle shots of the vampire, as he stalked victims on a ship, made him look overpowering. Elongated shadows — never mind that vampires don’t cast shadows — made him seem to seep out of the very walls.
“There’s this use of chiaroscuro, the shadows, the use of black and white, that is very strange and unsettling,” Frieden said. “There are lot of tacky films you see right now which are supposed to be horror, but they’re really shock. They’re not like your nightmares. This film is nightmarish.”
“Nosferatu” had a promising launch — complete with a “Feast of Nosferatu” theme party — at the Berlin Zoological Garden on March 4, 1922. But by August, Mrs. Stoker’s lawyers had swung into action.
“Nosferatu” was not destroyed, as Mrs. Stoker wished. But it was curbed. Thereafter it crept into town — much as the vampire does in the film — sneaking into London in 1928 and New York the year after. Then, in 1931, “Dracula” starring Bela Lugosi as a fully legal vampire in formalwear and a cape, relegated “Nosferatu” to the dustbin of film history. Or so it seemed.
“It wasn’t available,” Skal said. “It wasn’t seen in America. It was only after World War II that prints started popping up.”
Boomers and bloodsuckers
By the 1960s, a new generation had become horror crazy. Old-movie showings on TV, and magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland, had turned many kids into connoisseurs. Gradually, “Nosferatu” was rediscovered by the young. One of its new admirers was the dean of hipsters, Jack Kerouac.
“In a strange wool cap a thin hawknosed man opens the big oaken door,” Kerouac wrote in 1960, in his inimitable beat prose. “The audience realizes this is Count Nosferatu himself! Ugh!
“The castle has tile floors: — somehow there’s more evil in those tile floors than in the dripping dust of later Bela Lugosi castle where women with spiders on their shoulders dragged dead muslin gowns across the stone. They are the tile floors of a Byzantine Alexandrian Transylvanian throat-ogre.”
As the film became more accessible, as 8mm film gave way to videotape and DVDs and streaming, as younger filmmakers and musicians began to pay it homage, “Nosferatu” was suddenly everywhere. Like the film’s vampire — which springs out of his coffin like a jack-in-the-box — “Nosferatu” kept popping up.
“It’s really quite remarkable that here we are, 100 years later, celebrating it,” Skal said. “It was kind of hobbled for a while, but the strength of the film won out. I’ve seen it with live audiences, and the film still gives people the creeps.”
One screening, in particular, stays in his memory: at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York.
“When Count Orlok makes his first appearance, this collective shudder just rose in the audience,” he said. “It’s exactly what Bram Stoker would have wanted.”

Del Toro’s signature style of elegantly designed horror is always the backbone of his genre outings, and the filmmaker was finally able to garner widespread acclaim and recognition for this with his romantic fantasy, The Shape Of Water, which won both Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards in 2018. However, Del Toro’s distinctive aesthetic is not solely the result of his own imagination. In fact, many of the director’s most famous creations can be traced back through the history of cinema. Here are Guillermo del Toro’s favorite horror movies.
Nosferatu
Speaking to Sight & Sound, Guillermo Del Toro explained that F.W. Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece, Nosferatu, is “a symphony of fear indeed – and a symphony of perfect visual storytelling. The hypnotic nature of the film engrosses the audience into a trance.” Nosferatu, which was later remade by Werner Herzog as Nosferatu The Vampyre, is a German expressionist retelling of Bram Stoker’s literary classic, Dracula. However, the film was an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation, which explains the title change.
Häxan
Certainly one of the more experimental picks on this list, Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 horror film, Häxan, is a strange kind of essay film that combines documentary-style footage with a dramatized narrative in order to recount the history of witchcraft, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The filmmaker describes the film (via Criterion) as “the filmic equivalent of a hellish engraving by Bruegel or a painting by Bosch.” Guillermo Del Toro says the horror movie is “a strangely titillating record of sin and perversity that is as full of dread as it is of desire and atheistic conviction, and a condemnation of superstition that is morbidly in love with its subject.“
Frankenstein
Given Del Toro’s interest in sympathetic monsters (as seen in The Shape Of Water and Hellboy) it comes as no surprise that James Whale’s sci-fi horror classic, Frankenstein, is one of the director’s favorite movies. Released in 1932, Frankenstein is an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic novel of the same name. The filmmaker describes the movie as a tale “that touches the very essence of what I am and all that I believe in.” He adds that “Whale’s superb eye and tonal command are matched by a Karloff performance that manages to transmit both fragility and power.” This explains why Del Toro wanted to make his own Frankenstein; however, the project ultimately fell through because of Universal’s intentions of making a shared universe.

Freaks
Tod Browning’s infamous pre-Code horror flick, Freaks, set against the backdrop of a traveling circus, is another of Del Toro’s favorites. According the Mexican filmmaker, Freaks is “still unclassifiable after many decades. Still sick, twisted, perverse and profoundly human. Pickled in a jar of bile, it contains Browning’s view of the world at its purest.“
Vampyr
The filmmaker describes Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1932 classic vampire film, Vampyr, in contrast with Murnau’s earlier classic, saying: “it’s one of the two pillars for every vampiric film ever made. Whereas Dreyer concerns himself with the spiritual, Murnau’s film has a tangible, physical component of corruption that makes evil immediate and real.“
The Uninvited
One of the lesser-known titles on this list, 1944’s The Uninvited deals with the paranormal activity that plagues a mysterious house in Cornwall, recently purchased by a brother and sister. The Uninvited was one of the highest-grossing films of the year and part of a wave of supernatural-themed movies that began appearing in the 1940s. While on his Crimson Peak press tour, Del Toro told IGN that the film is a personal favorite of his, explaining that “It very much uses ghosts the way I use ghosts, which is a big challenge.” The director elaborates, saying “To use the ghosts as a scary thing that is evil is an easy thing. […] If you treat ghosts with neutrality in order to make them characters, that’s so hard, and ‘The Uninvited’ does it such a beautiful way.” It’s clear how this film inspired Del Toro’s Crimson Peak.
Eyes Without A Face
Georges Franju’s 1960 cult classic, Eyes Without A Face, has also left a lasting impact on Guillermo Del Toro. Speaking with Criterion, the filmmaker describes the movie as a gorgeous, dark poem “about fragility and horror.” In his view, Eyes Without A Face depends “on sublime, almost ethereal, imagery to convey a sense of doom and loss: mad, fragile love clinging for dear life in a maelstrom of darkness.“

The Innocents
Talking with Wired, Del Toro listed Jack Clayton’s 1962 adaptation of The Turning Of The Screw among his favorite horror movies. The Innocents concerns the haunting of a large estate where a governess is tasked with watching over two children. Unlike most of the other films on this list, The Innocents never fully confirms the existence of its supernatural elements, relying mostly on a paranoid, psychological atmosphere. The film also inspired Ari Aster’s Hereditary.
The Haunting
Another haunted house story that influenced the filmmaker is The Haunting, Robert Wise’s 1963 adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic work of gothic horror, The Haunting Of Hill House. Both The Haunting and The Innocents are supernatural thrillers that rely heavily on the psychological aspect of the story. In each case, the filmmakers make use of complex framing and camera work in order to instill a sense of terror rather than explicit horror.
Kwaidan
Kobayashi Masaki’s 1965 horror anthology, Kwaidan, presents four separate ghost tales (the title literally means “ghost story”). Del Toro told Criterion of his love of the film, explaining that Kwaidan is a dark “fairy tale that is both incredibly scary and incredibly beautiful and talks about love and death with equal passion.” Kobayashi’s visual direction is incredibly beautiful, making use of stylized sets and vivid colors.*
Kuroneko
On his Criterion Top 10, Del Toro lists two of Japanese filmmaker Shindo Kaneto’s films among his favorites: Onibaba and Kuroneko. He says, “Horrors and desire, death and lust go hand in hand in Onibaba and Kuroneko, a perverse, sweaty double bill from Kaneto Shindo.” According to Del Toro, they “are perfect fables rooted in Japanese folklore but distinctly modern in their approach to violence and sexuality.“

The Exorcist
Considering the amount of ghost stories on this list, it’s no surprise that William Friedkin’s classic, The Exorcist, is also among Guillermo Del Toro’s favorites. Interestingly enough, as a child, Del Toro didn’t find The Exorcist scary. “When I was a kid,The Exorcist didn’t do anything to me. But then I became a parent and it became incredibly scary,” the filmmaker explained. This makes sense given the fact that Del Toro’s horror always revolves around strong human emotions and connections, he doesn’t seem interested in horror for horror’s sake.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Perhaps one of the more surprising picks on this list is Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. While most of the other films featured among Del Toro’s favorites are either classics of the genre, or subtle and atmospheric psychological thrillers, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, on the other hand, is a violent movie recognized for its volatile camerawork and nihilistic tone. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is also one of the most realistic films on this list, and one of the few that don’t feature a supernatural element.
Jaws
Another classic to feature among Guillermo Del Toro’s favorites is Spielberg’s classic thriller, Jaws. Similarly to Spielberg, Del Toro has a knack for depicting the humans surrounding the monster as oftentimes more evil than the monsters themselves. In Jaws, the horror is simply the consequence of human negligence, corruption, and greed.
Alien
Another film that knew how to build up suspense before fully showing its monster was Ridley Scott’s Alien. In a sense, Alien is also a haunted house story, and it’s not hard to see how the intricate design of the film’s environment and the iconic xenomorph may have influenced Del Toro’s own approach to designing the hauntingly magical worlds of his movies.

On his Criterion Top 10, Del Toro lists two of Japanese filmmaker Shindo Kaneto’s films among his favorites: Onibaba and Kuroneko. He says, “Horrors and desire, death and lust go hand in hand in Onibaba and Kuroneko, a perverse, sweaty double bill from Kaneto Shindo.” According to Del Toro, they “are perfect fables rooted in Japanese folklore but distinctly modern in their approach to violence and sexuality.“

The Exorcist
Considering the amount of ghost stories on this list, it’s no surprise that William Friedkin’s classic, The Exorcist, is also among Guillermo Del Toro’s favorites. Interestingly enough, as a child, Del Toro didn’t find The Exorcist scary. “When I was a kid,The Exorcist didn’t do anything to me. But then I became a parent and it became incredibly scary,” the filmmaker explained. This makes sense given the fact that Del Toro’s horror always revolves around strong human emotions and connections, he doesn’t seem interested in horror for horror’s sake.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Perhaps one of the more surprising picks on this list is Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. While most of the other films featured among Del Toro’s favorites are either classics of the genre, or subtle and atmospheric psychological thrillers, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, on the other hand, is a violent movie recognized for its volatile camerawork and nihilistic tone. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is also one of the most realistic films on this list, and one of the few that don’t feature a supernatural element.
Jaws
Another classic to feature among Guillermo Del Toro’s favorites is Spielberg’s classic thriller, Jaws. Similarly to Spielberg, Del Toro has a knack for depicting the humans surrounding the monster as oftentimes more evil than the monsters themselves. In Jaws, the horror is simply the consequence of human negligence, corruption, and greed.
Alien
Another film that knew how to build up suspense before fully showing its monster was Ridley Scott’s Alien. In a sense, Alien is also a haunted house story, and it’s not hard to see how the intricate design of the film’s environment and the iconic xenomorph may have influenced Del Toro’s own approach to designing the hauntingly magical worlds of his movies.

In the video, Sierra Galvez (@squintsybengchen) is seen walking with a cart that she later says is filled with returns from the registers. As Galvez walks down the aisle, she turns her head and seems to be looking at something among piles of large cardboard boxes.

“I heard a noise, and it sounded like paper or cardboard falling … I kind of joke around that this place is haunted, so I’m freaking out because we always hear noises back there,” Galvez explained in another TikTok. “I saw a stack of signs tipped over and, instantly, I’m like, there’s something wrong, they’re not supposed to be tipped over.”
Galvez said she initially thought it was an animal until she saw a human hand poking out from underneath the signs.
“I slowly look up, and I see this dude staring dead in my eyes, that will forever haunt my eyes,” she said.
In another video, Galvez showed the CCTV footage of her sprinting away from the scene. After she leaves, the man comes out from his hiding spot and rummages around for something to take. Galvez said that she called her manager and then dialed 911 — but by the time police responded to her call, the man had left.
“I can’t imagine anything scarier than this night,” Galvez wrote in the caption of the video, which has since accumulated over 10 million views.
It is unclear where Galvez works specifically, but it appears to be some kind of big box store based on the footage.
The police also told Galvez that, despite the security cameras capturing the man taking something from the store, the store couldn’t charge him for intrusion because he presumably came in during open hours and therefore is technically a customer.
The legal definition of an intrusion is when an organization or person “intentionally invades the private affairs” of someone else. A store like the one where Galvez works is considered private property with public access during its work hours — so if the stranger did come in while the store was open, he was not technically invading a private space.
“[The] worst part is, he went in there as a customer and hid in the back, and I at least passed him [two] times without noticing,” Galvez added in the caption.
Viewers were terrified over the situation — with some noting that Galvez’s terrified sprint was “how [characters are] suppose[d] to run in scary movies.”
“I am SO glad you are safe and [that] you BOOKED it. I was literally cheering for [you],” one commenter wrote. “I have a similar job, [and] this is a huge fear of mine.”
“As a supervisor … I will never let my employees go by the back by themselves at night ever again,” another added.

Marvel’s latest Ghost Rider ongoing series opens on Johnny Blaze in a different kind of Hell than we’re used to: suburban America. In the tiny town of Hayden’s Falls, Johnny Blaze is a run-of-the-mill auto mechanic, married with two kids and generally liked by his community.
However, there’s something rotten under all the beauty. Johnny is hallucinating horrible creatures, waking from ghastly nightmares, and terrified of a shadowy presence that seems to be following him. His therapist and family chalk this up to his accident, repeatedly assuring him that there’s no such thing as monsters. But despite what they tell him, Johnny knows deep down that monsters really do exist.
Ghost Rider comics have always been able to encapsulate a bunch of genres, from dark fantasy to action to traditional superheroes. But in this latest incarnation, artist Cory Smith firmly establishes the book as horror. His depiction of the mysterious Hayden’s Falls early on is nothing but idyllic, all baseball fields and little churches and yipping dogs. But as the pages turn, that perfect picture melts; the baseball fields get covered in gore, the church goes up in flames, and the dogs… well, the dogs get a lot less cute.
Soon, all the tension that Smith has been building comes to a head, unleashing a storm of blood, beasts, and bad guys, the likes of which would give Hieronymus Bosch chills. Whether you like your horror subtle or balls-to-the-wall, Cory Smith has you covered in this comic.
Those gonzo spooks wouldn’t have been possible without the colorwork done by Bryan Valenza. It wouldn’t be shocking to learn that Valenza is a fan of Sam Raimi’s bonkers horror movies Evil Dead II or Drag Me to Hell, his choices put the same bombastic colors on the page that those films do on the screen.
Also dynamic is the progression of Valenza’s colors. During the subtle horror of the opening pages, he relies on blues and blacks to unsettle the reader. Then as the plot heats up, so do his tones, red taking up more of every page. No spoilers here, but you won’t be surprised when this comic ends in bright, terrifying flames.
But for all the incredible visuals that populate the world around Johnny Blaze, a lot of this story happens within his own head, and writer Benjamin Percy excels at putting us in there with him.
The fan-favorite Wolverine scribe focuses not just on terrifying monsters but the terror of being one, building out an attractive life that fans will want Johnny to have only to showcase the terrible things that happen once he gets it. It’s a kind of story that’s special in Big Two comics, much more about an internal conflict than an external one. By the end of the book, you might be left wondering whether the biggest antagonist Johnny Blaze has ever faced is the Ghost Rider himself.
Presenting that internal struggle to a reader is a difficult task, but Travis Lanham’s lettering goes a long way in getting it across. The internal monologue boxes Lanham has designed for Johnny are black and brooding; you can’t read them without feeling the weight of Johnny’s troubles. And while Cory Smith makes the monstrous cast of this book look scary, Lanham is responsible for making them sound scary. His gurgling speech bubbles and demonic letters make the already frightening things they say that much worse.
There are plenty of creatures within the pages of Ghost Rider #1. It’s even hinted that there’s a Big Bad behind Johnny’s current troubles. But even if they weren’t there, this book would be terrifying. Johnny Blaze is a man who gave up everything to stop his pain, and that pain only got worse. Living in his head is a literal Hell, whether or not there’s some gruesome Cronenberg thing writhing around in there. In this chilling, extremely well-crafted book, we have to live in there with him.

1979’s “The Amityville Horror” still sits atop many critics’ lists of scariest movies of all time. From the opening choral notes of Lalo Schifrin’s compositions (which earned him an Oscar nomination), it’s clear that something wicked lies in the spacious Dutch colonial at 112 Ocean Avenue, once the DeFeo home before the Lutz family moves in. It’s a house with bad residue after Ronald DeFeo, Jr. slays his entire family with a rifle in the early hours of November 13, 1974. A year passes before George and Kathy Lutz (James Brolin and Margot Kidder) move into the house with their three young children; the clan lasts 28 days before fleeing with claims of a haunted house. The house retains that dark energy, and the movie knows it; each room that the Lutz parents tour with the realtor is interspersed with imagery of the DeFeo murders before the kids even move in. As the 118-minute runtime powers forward, George battles for domain supremacy, even shouting “This is my house!” to the malevolent spirits in the climax.
Director Stuart Rosenberg (“Cool Hand Luke”) worked with Sandor Stern’s screenplay, adapted from the 1977 Jay Anson book of the same name, with one notable addition: the book’s title purports the haunting as “A True Story.” Anyone who remembers the mania surrounding “The Blair Witch Project” upon its release can speak to the power of the “true story” claim, even if it is fake news.
The Lutz family’s highly-contested account of paranormal experiences — which include, as seen in the movie, stigmata on the priest who attempted to bless the residence — was widely believed upon the book’s publication and, one could argue, led to the casting of the film’s lead actor. In an interview with The AV Club, Brolin spoke about the other movie he was filming, how the role fell into his lap, and how his experience with Anson’s book led to him agreeing to do the “Amityville” project.

While shooting Robert Butler’s neo-noir action film “Night of the Juggler,” James Brolin heard about the upcoming production in vague terms; there’s no script yet. In “Now a Terrifying Motion Picture!,” film scholar James F. Broderick writes that it was “originally conceived as a made-for-TV movie” and that Anson did write a screenplay adapting his book, but the studio rejected it in favor of seasoned television writer Sandor Stern’s version. Brolin explains how the book was the whole pitch:
“But as I’m shooting ‘Night of the Juggler’ … somebody says, ‘There’s no script, but you ought to read this book, ‘The Amityville Horror,’ because they’ll have the script soon, and they really would like to have you do it.’ So I was reading this novel at night and it’s two in the morning. Well, I would hang my pants on the door of the bedroom, I’d throw them over the top corner of the main door coming into the bedroom, and all of a sudden the pants fell off the door onto the floor. How I didn’t hit my head on the ceiling, I have no idea, because I was at a scary part of this book, and it so surprised me that I started laughing after I recovered and said, ‘I’ve got to do this movie!’ And that’s how that happened.”
Ah, stars — they’re just like us.

The fact that Brolin was so immersed in the story translates on the big screen. He has his work cut out for him, as the role of George Lutz is a cold, unfeeling one to begin with. But something happens with each accumulative bump in the night, while 112 Ocean Avenue works him over as easily as the Overlook consumes Jack Torrance in “The Shining.” The furrowed Dad brow gives way to a vacant brutality, and Brolin assumes the physicality of an increasingly agitated beast as George becomes more and more recessed into himself … which isn’t really himself at all. The broad Father-Knows-Best shoulders begin a proto-Jason Voorhees heave; the steady, deliberate movements become more snappy, reactive. Movies like “The Amityville Horror” and “The Shining” (both, it should be noted, feature an attempted axe murder by a father) act like possession movies in a time when it was mostly women’s bodies being invaded by the Devil in the movies. As Lutz, Brolin acts as a man untethered from himself until he and the plot work themselves into a fever pitch, making “The Amityville Horror” one of the great ’70s horror movies to withstand the test of time. Something that can’t quite be said for the movie’s sequels.

While shooting Robert Butler’s neo-noir action film “Night of the Juggler,” James Brolin heard about the upcoming production in vague terms; there’s no script yet. In “Now a Terrifying Motion Picture!,” film scholar James F. Broderick writes that it was “originally conceived as a made-for-TV movie” and that Anson did write a screenplay adapting his book, but the studio rejected it in favor of seasoned television writer Sandor Stern’s version. Brolin explains how the book was the whole pitch:
“But as I’m shooting ‘Night of the Juggler’ … somebody says, ‘There’s no script, but you ought to read this book, ‘The Amityville Horror,’ because they’ll have the script soon, and they really would like to have you do it.’ So I was reading this novel at night and it’s two in the morning. Well, I would hang my pants on the door of the bedroom, I’d throw them over the top corner of the main door coming into the bedroom, and all of a sudden the pants fell off the door onto the floor. How I didn’t hit my head on the ceiling, I have no idea, because I was at a scary part of this book, and it so surprised me that I started laughing after I recovered and said, ‘I’ve got to do this movie!’ And that’s how that happened.”

The fact that Brolin was so immersed in the story translates on the big screen. He has his work cut out for him, as the role of George Lutz is a cold, unfeeling one to begin with. But something happens with each accumulative bump in the night, while 112 Ocean Avenue works him over as easily as the Overlook consumes Jack Torrance in “The Shining.” The furrowed Dad brow gives way to a vacant brutality, and Brolin assumes the physicality of an increasingly agitated beast as George becomes more and more recessed into himself … which isn’t really himself at all. The broad Father-Knows-Best shoulders begin a proto-Jason Voorhees heave; the steady, deliberate movements become more snappy, reactive. Movies like “The Amityville Horror” and “The Shining” (both, it should be noted, feature an attempted axe murder by a father) act like possession movies in a time when it was mostly women’s bodies being invaded by the Devil in the movies. As Lutz, Brolin acts as a man untethered from himself until he and the plot work themselves into a fever pitch, making “The Amityville Horror” one of the great ’70s horror movies to withstand the test of time. Something that can’t quite be said for the movie’s sequels.
